25 December 2017 (Part 1)

CHRISTMAS DAY – part 1

Gwern opens his presents
In the Deri flat, Gwern is opening his presents, watched by his mother and Garry;  Dani protests that it is like Aladdin’s Cave there.   Garry replies, “He deserves to be spoilt, because next year he’ll have to share everything.
Then Gwyneth gives Garry a present, a double photo frame;  “One side for you and Gwern, one for you and the new baby.”
Dani looks unimpressed
Dani looks decidedly unimpressed,
Mathew brings them drinks
then Mathew comes in with drinks for them, but Dani demands that he gives them some privacy.
"You'll need plenty of help"
Garry stresses that she will need plenty of help in the future, but she is keen to keep family life and the Deri separate.
"The buffet has arrived"
Mathew rather uneasily informs them that the buffet has arrived, and Gwyneth says that it is time she went.
"I can't drink that"
Dani refuses a glass of champagne, but Garry tells her, “I thought you were supposed to have champagne,”
Garry has a gift for Dani
and presents her with a box containing some diamonds.
"You're perfect, do you know that?"
“You’re perfect, do you know that?
"And so is the baby"
“And so is the baby!”   She looks rather guilty as he walks out of the room.
"You look ridiculous, Dad"
At number 7, they have a visit from Siôn, who is dressed as an elf, and is followed by Macs.   As Siôn greets Greta, Iolo tells him that he looks ridiculous;
Greta looks very contented
Greta actually smiles.
"I'll go and see Arwen"
Macs feels rather out of place, and decides that he will go and see Arwen, but his father points out that this is not a good idea;  “Stick to the plan – don’t go causing any upset before tomorrow, so I can spend time with my other grand-daughter.”
"I feel guilty now"
At Cysgod y Glyn, when Ffion opens her present, she feels guilty as she has only given Gethin smellies and socks.   “Let me switch it on, so you can relax,” he says,
"She doesn't seem very well"
but she is not confident that she can relax, as Arwen does not seem very well.
In comes Arwen
Then Arwen comes into the room, clutching her Christmas stocking;
You're the best present Mam has ever had"
“You’re the best present Mam has ever had!” Ffion tells her,
"Shall we open some presents?"
“Shall we open some presents?”
"See what Daddy Dai has for you"
At Bryntirion, Dai is outside, in his dressing gown, calling for the cat;  Jason and Sara creep up behind him.   “Come here, puss, so you can see what Daddy Dai has got for you,” he says.
Jason gives him a shock when he asks, “Have you taught it to say ‘Merry Christmas, Daddy Dai’ yet?”
It appears that Dai's secret is out
He is very angry, but then Diane comes around the corner and tells him he is not going out dressed like that, as it is embarrassing.
"We can enjoy ourselves, can't we, pudding?"
“Dai’s not coming, so we can enjoy ourselves, can’t we, pudding?” she says to Ifan, and Dai objects to her using that term,
"You'll give him a complex"
maintaining she will give Ifan a complex.
"Before the Grinch spoils it!"
DJ decides they had better go before the Grinch spoils it for everyone.
"Yes, we went up Bryn Deri"
Diane asks Jason and Sara if they went for their walk to the top of Bryn Deri, and says that she would not be able to walk up, let alone come back down again.
"It's blinkin' cold!'
Hannah joins them, and when asked how she is finding Christmas in Cwmderi, replies, “Blinkin’ cold!   I’d usually be in a bikini – but the warm welcome makes up for that.”   As they leave, Dai tells them to stuff their Christmas.
"Ifan could do with grandad's company"
Diane reminds him, “Martha might not be here, but Ifan could do with grandad’s company.”
It is time for the parade
In the Deri, Dani and Garry are ready to take Gwern outside for the parade;
"Name your price, then leave us alone"
Dani goes across to Mathew, who is sitting mournfully, and asks him, “How much do you want?   Name your price, then leave us alone!   I can’t cope with you around any more.”
"I just want to be a father to my child"
He protests that he just wants to be a father to his child, but Dani points out that he does not know if she is his child.
If she is, they can make plans, he insists,
"I would be thrown out!"
but she laughs;  “There would be no plans, because I would be thrown out, and it would be amen for you!”
"I would look after you"
He is adamant that he would look after her, and she rages, “I don’t want you to look after me – can’t you see that?   I’m upset because you’re in the way, and you’re not leaving me alone.   Do you know what?
"I won't have any choice but to . . ."
“If you don’t stop this, I won’t have any choice but to . . .”   Without a further word, she walks away.
"Yes, I'm on my way, Colin"
Gaynor is becoming rather exasperated on the phone with Colin, assuring him that she is leaving now, but as she walks into the kitchen,
"Aargh!"
she has a great shock.
"I'm sorry, Gaynor"
Elgan is standing there in front of her.   “I’m sorry, Gaynor,” he says,
"I only came to give you this"
and hands her a Christmas present.
Santa's transport has arrived
In the yard outside APD, Eifion arrives with Santa’s sleigh, and greets Ricky, Ed and Siôn.   Ed is not very cheerful, but admits that he might smile after a few pints;
"I shall be there too"
“After having lunch with Anita?” queries Siôn, “I shall be there too – she insisted.”
Ed is dead against this idea;
Kelly looks somewhat aggrieved
then Kelly walks around the corner in an oversized elf garb, and moans to Ed that she has his costume.
Ed has Kelly's costume
“This is the child size – just like you’re behaving!” he answers, “Just get changed, will you?   I’m freezing!”
Santa has a static electricity problem
Mark arrives, in his Father Christmas outfit, and complains about the polyester lining;  “There’s enough static in it to power all the lights in Cwmderi!”
Dani is about to do a runner . . .
Dani has packed a couple of bags, puts on her coat,
. . . and takes a photo with her
picks up the photo of herself and Garry and puts it in one of the bags.
"What are you doing, Dan?"
As she is about to leave, Mathew comes in and demands what she is doing.   “I’m leaving – something I should have done months ago!”
"I know I've caused you a lot of stress"
He knows that he has caused her a lot of stress, and promises that he will stop.   “But that doesn’t change anything, does it?” she insists,
"I'm living a lie"
“I’m living a lie – Garry’s living a lie – and it’s not fair!”
"Everything will be all right, Dani"
He pleads that he will stop, and everything will be all right;  then Britt calls him from downstairs, he removes the bags from her shoulder and tells her to relax.
She looks at the photo
She looks at the photo of Garry and Gwern, with tears in her eyes,
"I'm so sorry, Garry"
and whispers, “I’m so sorry, Garry.”
The crowds gather
Most of the villagers appear to be out in the street;  final adjustments are made to the public address system, and Santa Claus begins his journey.
"Ladies and gentlemen"
Siôn announces, “Ladies and gentleman, Santa Claus has arrived in Cwmderi!”
The parade begins
and the cavalcade, led by Ed and Kelly, come into sight.
Arwen is behind there, somewhere . . .
Arwen can be seen, with Ffion and Gethin, running alongside the sleigh;
Eifion stops,
. . . and now she has her present
and Santa hands a present to Arwen.   We see Macs, obviously looking for someone;  he joins Iolo and Tyler, who have brought Greta.
Hannah embraces Chester
Hannah runs across the road and embraces Chester;
Mulled wine from the café
Debbie brings round mulled wine from the café.   Megan is asked if she is going to join in the fun,
"It's no excuse for a carnival"
but replies, “The Saviour’s birth is not an excuse for a carnival!”
"Scrooge!"
Kelly describes her as ‘Scrooge’.
Mathew kisses Vicky . . .
Vicky runs across to Mathew,
. . . but his mind is on other things
who is of course looking miserable.
"'Fugue Walking' is one of the symptoms"
At Llwyncelyn, Elgan says, “I can understand that you’re angry with me, especially after Friday, but ‘Fugue Walking’ is one of the symptoms, apparently.
Gaynor is not convinced
“You could look it up, if you like.
"I only came to wish you Merry Christmas"
“As I said, I only came to wish you a Merry Christmas.”   He is about to leave the house, but she urges him to stay.
They are still marching up and down
Ed and Kelly are marching up and down with their drums in front of the Deri.
"I'm supposed to be a cracker"
Colin explains to Garry that he is supposed to be a cracker;  “Gaynor is the other half, but she has not turned up – and she’s not answering her phone now.”
Dani slips out while no-one is looking
While everybody’s attention is on Santa, Dani slips across the road.
"Keep an eye on Gwern for me"
Garry leaves Gwern with his mother, as the gathered multitude sing a traditional Welsh song.
“Who is coming over the hill, very very quietly?
His beard is long and his hair is white,
And he has something in his sack;
And who is sitting on the roof, next to the big chimney?
Santa Claus.”
"What?   It won't be here for an hour?"
Dani takes out her phone;  “The taxi was supposed to be here by now,” she says, and is angry that it has been delayed by an hour.
She does not have that much time
Then she is seized by a sudden pain.
"Dani, the customers are arriving"
Mathew goes upstairs to tell Dani that the people are starting to arrive, but finds she has gone.
He sees Dani's note . . .
Then he notices a paper on the table, which begins, ‘Dear Garry’.   He reads the first few lines,
. . . and leaves it on the table as he dashes off
then rushes out of the flat.
Liam appears in the Deri . . .
Downstairs, Debbie is amazed when Liam appears and says he is buying the first round.   He is introduced to Non, about whom he has heard a lot.
. . . and Mark is delighted to see him
Then Mark is delighted to see him, and Debbie pronounces this, “The Best Christmas ever!”
Photo of the flat above the café
Vicky finds her Secret Santa gift, a card with a photo of the flat above the café, and is puzzled.
Vicky is dumbfounded
“It’s not a joke – you and Mathew can have the flat, no bond and half the rent – it was Mark’s idea!” says Debbie.   Vicky gives him a hug.
"I don't need to talk to anyone"
Elgan is eating a meal with Gaynor;  he insists that he does not need to talk to anyone, then there is a knock on the door.
Colin is waiting for you
It is Garry, who is extremely surprised to find that Elgan is there.
"Afraid I would attack Gaynor?"
“Were you afraid that I had attacked Gaynor?” he asks, “I would never hurt her!”
Garry is very glad that he is OK;
"You gave us a bit of a fright"
“You gave us a bit of a fright, disappearing like that.”   Gaynor says that he does not remember anything since Friday.
"It's some kind of therapy"
Elgan explains, “It’s some kind of therapy – you put yourself back in the battle mentally – it works for some.”
"I can stay for a cup of tea"
Garry agrees to stay for a cup of tea.
Dani is in desperate straits . . .
Dani is in a terrible state, hardly able to walk along the back street,
. . . and is doubled up with pain
and in terrible pain.   She reaches the comparative sanctuary of the alley,
She almost calls Garry
and tries to phone Garry, but is doubled up with pain.
Mathew sprints across the road
Mathew happens to see her and hurries across;
"The baby's coming!"
“I can’t leave – the baby’s coming!” she screams.
"Are we feeding the 5,000?"
At number 10, Anita has prepared the dining table;  Kelly demands, “Are we feeding the 5,000, or what?”   Anita replies that a couple of friends are coming, and at that moment, they arrive.
"Please tell me you're carol singers!"
“Please tell me you’re carol singers!” Kelly remarks, upon seeing that Ed is one of them.
"If I had the choice, I'd be in the Deri!"
“If I had the choice, I’d be having a pint in the Deri!” confirms Ed, then Macs comes in, asking if there is room for one more, and kissing Kelly.   Ed looks even more depressed.
"Where's Mathew?"
Britt is rushed off her feet in the Deri, and wants to know where Mathew is.   DJ says that it makes sense that Colin is dressed as a cracker;  “They are full of bad jokes, too!”
Non is given this pendant
Non is presented with a pendant bearing the word ‘teulu’ [FAMILY],
Mark says that it is not from him
then Debbie finds that her gift is a ring, which she assumes is from Mark, but he denies all knowledge of it.
"Someone must think highly of you"
Kath says that someone must think highly of her.
"Hurry – the baby is about to arrive!"
Out in the alley, Mathew is frantically trying to call an ambulance;
"I have no idea how to deliver a baby"
“I have no idea how to deliver a baby,” he tells Dani.
"I can feel the head!"
She screams, “I can feel the head!” and Mathew assures her that she is all right as he is with her.
Macs recalls what Huw used to say
Around the dinner table at number 10, Macs is showing off, remarking that Huw used to call brussels sprouts, “Fart balls!” which Kelly seemed to find amusing.
"It was after Gemma killed her mother"
Anita asks Ed about his memories of Christmas, and he replies, “Not very good ones, I’m afraid – it was when we took Gemma in, after she killed her mother.”
This rather stifles any further conversation,
"And now your wife's in prison!"
until Macs comments, “And now your wife’s in prison, so they’re not getting any better!”
"I hope I won't be next"
Ed hopes that he will not be next.
"It's lovely stuffing, Anita!"
Siôn tries to change the subject pointing out how tasty the stuffing is;  Kelly and Ed look at each other.
Garry asks Elgan what he is going to do now;
Elgan wants to get back to work
he replies that he is going to start back at the surgery as soon as possible, but Gaynor wonders if this is good idea.   “I’ve shut myself away for so long, I need some normality,” he replies, and Garry says that Dani will be glad as she does not like the locum.
"I must get back to Dani"
Then he leaves, saying that he will see them later.
"Are you sure, Elgan?"
Elgan suggests that they could go to the Deri, but Gaynor is doubtful about this;  “I’m not going to drink, if that’s what you’re worried about,” he says,
"I'd love it if you were with me"
“But I need to find my way back from this – and I’d love it if you were there with me.”
Dani has had a very rapid childbirth
Dani is screaming with pain, and then Mathew announces, “I’ve got her, Dani – she looks just like you.”
"Shouldn't she be crying?"
Dani is immediately concerned as the baby is not making any sound;
Mathew gives mouth-to-mouth
he administers mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and after a few seconds the baby cries.
The baby cries lustily . . .
Now Dani is overjoyed.
. . . and Gethin can hardly believe his eyes . . .
Gethin happens to be passing and hears the sound of a baby;  he looks,
. . . when he sees their passionate kiss
and sees Mathew kissing Dani.   As an approaching siren can be heard, Dani notices Gethin, and Mathew tells him to inform the ambulance crew where Dani is.
The obvious closeness between them . . .
At the other end of the alley, Vicky is looking at the couple on the ground, with the baby;
. . . is also disturbing to Vicky
she appears very disturbed.
