25 December 2017 (part 2)

CHRISTMAS DAY – part 2

Dani is put in the ambulance
Dani is loaded into the ambulance, and Mathew wants to go with her, but Gethin points out that is not a good idea.   Dani tells Mathew that everything is OK,
"It's not – you and me!"
but he replies, “It’s not – you and me!”
Garry has arrived at last
Garry has just arrived on the scene, and Gethin informs him that everything is all right;  he grabs the bags and climbs into the ambulance.
"Everything happened so quickly!"
“Everything happened so quickly!” Dani says,
"Hello – I'm Dadi"
and he introduces himself to the baby as Dadi.
In the Deri, Mark is looking very uncomfortable, but insists that he does not want any fuss.
"Where have you been, Mathew?"
When Mathew comes in, Britt demands where he has been,
"He's been playing 'Call the Midwife'!"
and Gethin explains, “He’s been playing Call the Midwife, because Garry and Dani have had a little girl!”   There is a spontaneous round of applause,
Vicky has her doubts
and all except Vicky are very pleased.
Mark has a very severe attack of flatulence . . .
Kath thinks that they ought to take Mark home;  then, to everyone’s disgust, he breaks wind very loudly, and at great length.
. . . which Kath finds very embarrassing
He feels much better after that.
"You should come to Halkadiki with me"
At number 10, Macs is showing off, proposing that he and Kelly should go to Halkidiki  [A REGION OF NORTHERN GREECE];  “You look the type!”   Ed comments that he really does not know Kelly,
"Are you going to invite me, then?"
but Kelly tells Macs that he is spot on, and asks whether he is going to invite her.   “There are some great deals in January,” he replies.
She continues to agree with him, in order to wind up Ed, and asks him to confirm the dates.
Ed removes his paper hat . . .
Ed has had enough, and thanks Anita for the meal;
. . . and adjourns to the Deri
he is heading for the Deri.
Not a very successful meal
Anita and Siôn look at each other.
"It's probably a gas mask!"
Mark has his Secret Santa gift, which Debbie suggests may be a gas mask;
Kath recognises the book
it is a book, which Kath recognises as one that Dyff used to have.
"I found it with Mam's stuff"
“I found it with Mam’s stuff, and I thought you might like it,” says Non.
Mark's father gave it to his Welsh teacher
He looks in the front and finds an inscription, “To Mererid, the only teacher to knock some sense into this skull – Dyff.”
"He thought the world of that book!"
Kath informs him that he thought the world of that book, and walks away, overcome with emotion.
"It's nice that it's back in the family"
Mark says that it is nice that the book is back in the family, where it should be.
Siôn apologises to Ed
Siôn insists on buying Ed a drink, as an apology for dragging him over there;  “Macs has always been challenging,” he says, but Ed replies that Kelly is free to see whoever she likes.
"I'll tell you about it later, Sher"
“Is it true that Dani’s baby was born by the bins outside the salon?” Sheryl asks Gethin, incredulously.
Garry serenades the new baby . . .
At the hospital, Garry is crooning to the new baby, “Beside the sea red roses growing, beside the sea white lilies showing.   Beside the sea, my true love. . .
. . . who is not showing much interest
“Do you remember me singing this to you?”
"I've never felt so happy, Dani"
Then he turns to Dani and tells her he has never felt as happy as he does right now.
Dani just wants to be home
She wants to be home, in their bed, just the three of them.
Gaynor and Elgan have arrived
Gaynor and Elgan arrive at the Deri, and he is feeling rather uneasy.
"Let's dance, up close and personal"
Kelly says that she wants to dance with Macs, up close and personal.   Ed has had enough of this.
Gethin thanks Sheryl for her support . . .
Gethin goes to talk to Sheryl;  “I just want an easy life,” he says, “I doubt we would have got through this without you and Hywel.
. . . and gives her a small gift
“You have been amazing, so I just want to give you a little something to say thank you.”
She says that the brooch is lovely, and he attempts to put it on her jumper, accidentally sticking it into her,
He manages to stab her with the pin
so she thinks she had better do it.
"Right, I'll go and get a drink"
There is an awkward silence, and then he goes to the bar.
"He thought the world of you, too"
Mark finds his mother and reminds her, “He thought the world of you, too.”   She appreciates that Non was trying to do something nice for him, and describes her as a good girl.
"When will the grief stop, Mark?"
She wonders when the grief will stop, as she misses him as much now as the day he left.
Dai is home alone, with his whisky . . .
Dai sits quietly at home, drinking his single malt,
. . . and his memories of Martha
then takes a tiny baby’s hat from its box and remembers Martha.
The cat saunters in . . .
The cat runs in and jumps up on to the sofa;
. . . and he wants to cuddle it
Dai wants to give the cat a cuddle,
"Cats are a lot less trouble than people"
remarking that cats are a lot less trouble than people.   The cat, however, has other ideas and scratches him.
"Nefi wen!   You nasty little . . !"
Nefi wen!   You nasty little . . !” he shouts,
Outside, he notices a red mitten . . .
and stomps outside, where he notices a red mitten on top of the bin;
. . . and he smiles
he picks it up and smiles.
"The other day it was Ed tickling your fancy"
Anita wants to know what is going on between Kelly and Macs;  “He tickles my fancy,” Kelly informs her, but she points out that only the other day it was Ed tickling her fancy.
"Get over it, Auntie Anita!"
“I’m fickle!   Get over it, Auntie Anita!” is the reply.
Garry and Dani come in with the baby
Just then, Garry and Dani return to the Deri;  everyone looks delighted, except Mathew, who asks if everything is all right.
Vicky watches Mathew's reaction
Vicky is keeping an eye on Mathew.
Britt hurries off to get some champagne,
Garry praises Mathew . . .
while Garry announces a toast to wish Dani and the little one well.   He also thanks Mathew, the hero, who saved the baby’s life.   “Without him, today could have been a very different day.”
. . . who looks very choked-up
Mathew looks ready to burst into tears,
"I saw my boyfriend snogging your wife!"
and Vicky shouts, “Everything’s not all right when I see my boyfriend snogging your wife!   I know what I saw – it wasn’t a nice little kiss –
"It was a snog!"
“it was a snog!”
Everyone looks taken aback by this,
Dani shakes her head
Dani shakes her head and Mathew says that he can explain;  “It must have been the angle from which Vicky was looking!
"I leaned over to pass her the baby"
“I was in shock, giving the baby mouth-to-mouth.   Dani couldn’t move, so I leaned over to pass her the baby.”
"He's bound to stick up for his sister!"
He appeals to Gethin to back up his story, but Vicky says there is no point, as Gethin is bound to stick up for his sister.
Gethin insists he did not see any kissing
Gethin accuses Vicky of misunderstanding the situation;  “Yes, they were close, but I did not see any kissing.”
Vicky is escorted home
Liam takes Vicky home.
Dani is troubled
Upstairs, in the Deri flat, Dani stares again at the photo of Garry and Gwern;
"What were you doing out there, Dani?"
he asks her what she was doing out there, on her own with the bag.   At first she does not answer,
"I thought it was happening"
then explains that she thought it was happening;  she had smashed her phone and did not know where he was.
"I heard that Elgan was at Gaynor's"
He tells her that he heard Elgan was at Gaynor’s house;
"So you were at another woman's house"
“So let’s get this straight – when your baby was being born, you were at another woman’s house,” Dani summarises, “I must tell her when she’s old enough to understand.”   He will make a cup of tea, and Dani also wants her slippers.
Mathew reads the letter . . .
Mathew is reading the letter left by Dani, and Eifion comes to investigate what he is doing;
. . . and Eifion intervenes
“Have you got anything you want tell me?   Look, I know Vicky’s a bit flighty,” he says, and
"She resents me spending so much time here"
Mathew explains that she resents him spending so much time working at the pub.   Eifion warns, “You be careful!   It looks to me as if you’re playing with fire.”
"Yes, Garry?"
Mathew’s phone sounds;  when he sees the number, he assumes it is Garry,
Dani checks that he took the letter
but Dani’s voice asks him if he took the letter.   He says he went to get it, and then threw it away.
"Is it too late to have a pint?"
Dai joins the rest of the family at the bar;  “Is it too late to have a pint, or what?”
"Here you are, Jason"
He hands the mitten to Jason, as it belongs to Ifan.
Ed is being wound up, as intended
Ed is becoming increasingly angry, as he watches Macs fondling Kelly’s hair.
"That lunch was not a good idea"
Anita has come to the conclusion that having lunch was not a good idea.
"Mind that you look after Dani"
Sheryl advises Gethin to look after Dani, as this sort of thing can have a serious impact on a new mother,
"I'm here, if you want to talk"
and assures him that she is here if he wants to talk.
Kath finally admits that she bought the ring
Debbie would like to know who bought her the ring, and Kath confesses that it was her;  “I wanted to show how much I appreciate what did you and your family do for Mark.   Now go and get your round – I got the last one, and hurry up – I’m parched!”
Ffion is being massaged
Ffion is relaxing when Gethin returns unexpectedly;  “Why would I want to stay out when everything I want is here?”
"How much have you had to drink?"
She is convinced that he has had too much to drink,
The result of a guilty conscience
and he kisses her.
Iolo goes to answer the door
Iolo and Tyler are slumped on the sofa in front of the television, when they have a visitor.
"The new baby has arrived!"
Siôn informs them of the arrival of the new baby, which galvanises Tyler into action.
"When he comes back, he'll tell you the whole story"
Siôn tells Iolo, “When he comes back, he can tell you the whole story!”
Mathew comes through the back door
Mathew comes in through the back door at Maes-y-Deri, and Vicky immediately advises him, “Before you say anything – did I really get it that wrong?   Should I apologise?”
"I know I've been working a lot lately"
He knows he has been working there a lot lately, but it is so that they can have a place of their own.
"We now have our own place!"
Vicky has some news for him, that they have their own place;  “We have the café flat half-price as a Christmas gift – it will be great, because you won’t have to work so much.”   Liam is listening with interest as she continues that they are moving in this week.
He hardly looks overjoyed
Mathew desperately tries to manufacture some enthusiasm.
Macs goes to the Tyler,
"It's nopt right to toy with Macs"
and Ed remarks to Kelly, “I want to congratulate you on today, but it’s not right to toy with Macs –
"It's obvious what you're doing"
“it’s obvious what you’re doing – you’re trying to make me feel . . .”
"Well, are you jealous?"
She demands, “Jealous?   Well, are you jealous?”
Then she kisses him
and she suddenly kisses him.   Ed concludes that she is drunk, and as she moves in for another kiss, he turns away and wishes her Merry Christmas.
"I'm going to leave them to it"
Watching from the other end of the bar, Anita says that she is going to leave them to it.
Kelly hurries outside
Kelly walks out of the pub, just as Tyler approaches,
"Have a drink with Uncle Tyler!"
and tells her that she must have a drink with Uncle Tyler.   She dissolves into tears;  “I’ve tried, Ty – I really have tried to pretend, but I can’t cope with it any more.
"I'm head-over-heels in love with Ed!"
“Ed – I’m head-over-heels in love with him, and he doesn’t love me.
"What am I going to do?"
“What am I going to do?”
Mark almost drops the tray of drinks
Mark is rather unsteady on his feet as he brings the next round of drinks;  he says that this year has been a year to remember for their family.
He summarises the year
“The Collinses moved into Maes-y-Deri,
"We found Non"
we found Non, and most of the Joneses are here too –
"Not forgetting Mathew"
“not forgetting Mathew.   Family is important, and if we are all together, we can get through anything.
"He's singing your song – about the wind!"
A voice is heard, singing, “The wind blows,” and Kath says that this is Mark’s song.   “Mary on her bed of straw, watching her baby fair.”
Dai leads the community singing
By this time, everyone is joining in.   We see that Dai is leading the singing;  “Thoughtfully gazing upon his face, nursing the maker of God’s grace.   Singing a sweet melody.   Sleep, sleep, my dearest one, sleep until break of day. ”
Meanwhile, Dani slumbers . . .
We see Dani, sleeping,
. . . the baby is awake . . .
with the baby in her cot alongside,
. . . and Garry watches over them both
and Garry listening to the music coming from downstairs.
The song continues . . .
“Sleep awhile, sleep awhile, until the shepherds come;  come, come to a humble home, wise men in turn arrive.”
Mark says he is going to the toilet,
. . . and everyone joins in
as the song continues, “Sleep until Herod arrives with his sword, sleep for a while, then awake, living word.   Sleep till the cross be thine.”
Mark stumbles out into the street . . .
He stumbles unsteadily out of the door, then sees the lights of the Christmas tree going round and round,
. . . and collapses on the pavement
and collapses on to the pavement, as the last word of the song is heard;
The last, harmonious notes of the song
“Sleep.”
