30 October 2017

Vicky works on her laptop
At Maes-y-Deri, Vicky is compiling her CV on the laptop, and Mathew says that it makes her sound quite clever.
"They will be queueing up"
“Now people will be able to see that – they will be queueing up with this CV.
"Now the fun starts –finding work"
“Now the fun starts – finding work.”
"A red folder for me . . ."
He produces printed copies of his CV in a plastic folder,
". . . and a blue one for you"
and then she sets the printer in action.   “Right, we are going to find work today, if it’s the last thing we do,” she decides.
Megan is unimpressed with what she has seen
Megan comes out of the vestry and scolds Carl that the place is not close to being ready;  he says that it looks worse than it is,
"Everything is under control"
and everything is under control.   They know what it is like working to a strict deadline.
"It's very difficult to trust you"
Megan is finding it very difficult to trust him at the moment, and recalls that she was praising him last week.   “I won’t let you down, you’ll see!” he assures her.
"My good name is at stake"
“You make sure of that – my good name is at stake, and your father’s,” Megan tells him, “I shall be back tomorrow, and I expect to see a difference!”
Tyler is going out for a walk
Tyler is leaving number 7 with Greta as Dai notices Megan walking along the street;
"Here's the Judas!"
“Here’s the Judas!” he exclaims, “It’s obvious that loyalty and faithfulness mean nothing to chapel-goers.”
"Carl is doing a fine job
She advises him that he should not take his customers for granted, and insists that Carl is doing a fine job.
"Cowboy Carl!"
“Cowboy Carl, as they call him!” Dai snarls.
“It’s sad that a man of your age is so bitter and so jealous of young people,” Megan comments and walks away.
Dani prepares for hallowe'en
Dani is decorating the Deri in preparation for Hallowe’en;  Garry is angry when he sees her perched on a chair, and orders her to get down.   She replies, “Someone has to put this stuff up, and I want everything to be ready.   It’s bad for the baby if I rush,” she tells him, but he says it will be even worse if she falls.
"I've bought us a 'baby-moon'!"
Then he announces that she will not be here for Hallowe’en;  “I’ve bought us a ‘baby-moon’, [A relaxing or romantic holiday taken by parents-to-be before their baby is born – OED] a five-star hotel in Bath, and we going tomorrow.”
Dani raises logistical difficulties
Dani is excited, but points out that Britt and Gwern are in Newcastle.   “What’s the point of having staff if we don’t use them?” he demands.
"You shouldn't be up there!"
Then Vicky comes in, and also warns Dani she should not be up there;
"What you need is a barmaid with experience"
“What you need is a barmaid with experience who can do that for you.”
Garry is quite emphatic that the answer is no;
"You and your boyfriend stole from our pub"
“You and your boyfriend stole from our pub – that’s all I need to know!”
Elgan intends to give Garry another thrashing
Elgan arrives, and suggests that he will give Garry another thrashing;  they leave for the sports centre.
Dai whiles away the long hours
Dai is so busy in APD that he is playing solitaire on the laptop when Mathew comes in and proffers his CV;
"Maybe you can use an extra pair of hands"
“I thought maybe you could use an extra pair of hands – odd jobs or whatever you want.”
Dai grumpily replies, “I don’t know if you’ve been living in a cave, but APD is in a bit of a pickle at the moment –
"There isn't enough work for this pair of hands!"
“there isn’t enough work for this pair of hands!   And even if I needed 20 workers, I wouldn’t give you a job – you can’t be trusted – you were sacked from the Deri.”
Mathew become rather abusive
Mathew tells him, “You can stuff your job – I would hate working here anyway!   No wonder this place is going down the pan, with you running it!”
"No wonder you're on the dole!"
Dai shouts after him that it is no wonder he is on the dole with an attitude like that.
The peace is shattered by the arrival of Gwyneth
Out in the park, Tyler is just putting Greta back in her pram when Gwyneth approaches;  he is not pleased to see her.
She sympathises with Tyler's predicament
She comments that nothing can prepare a person for the first few months;  “Who asked you?” Tyler demands.   She says that she has been there, she knows how difficult it is, and that it is all right to admit that you are struggling.
Tyler politely tells her to get lost
“With respect, Gwyneth, I don’t care what you think,” he tells her, “If you don’t mind, I would like to be alone with my little girl.”
"I was only offering some comfort"
She protests that she was only offering some comfort,
Greta has not a care in the world
but he informs her that he can do without it.
Mathew seeks work in the vestry
Mathew arrives in the vestry, where the work is going on, and asks if they are looking for labourers;  he can weld and has a lot of experience.
"OK, when can you start?
He is very surprised when Carl asks him, “When can you start?
"This is cash-in-hand"
“The JobCentre doesn’t need to get involved – this is cash-in-hand.”
"Well, I'm not sure"
Mathew is doubtful about this, but there is the prospect of some extra money in his pocket;  Carl says that this is the way he works, and it is up to Mathew.
"All right, then"
Eventually, Matthew agrees,
He takes off his jacket
and is told to get on with it.
Vicky asks about a job in a clothes shop . . .
Vicky is speaking on the phone to a clothes shop, and points out that she made clothes for Awyr Iach for a time, but the seasonal work came to an end.
. . . but is disappointed
It appears they have no vacancies.
Mathew finds there are insufficient screws to fix a track which requires eight,
"You could get away with four there"
but Carl tells him that four will be perfectly adequate,
Mathew is not so sure
which Mathew doubts.
Tyler feels sleepy . . .
In the park, Tyler is feeling tired
. . . and nods off in the sunshine . . .
and dozes off on the bench;
. . . while Greta lies, contented
Greta is lying happily in her pram.
Dai harangues Dani about the work at Bethania
Dai is in the Deri, protesting that, “The Chuckle Brothers could make a better job of Bethania than those crooks!”
Garry has been beaten again
Elgan and Garry are back from their game, which was won by Elgan, once again.   Gwern is sitting behind them, and Garry takes him upstairs so that he can play his new game.
"If that vestry is ready for the dance competition . . ."
Dai asserts, “If that vestry is ready for the dance competition, I’ll eat a bag of cement!”
"Mathew is working in the vestry"
Garry advises him that Carl has been recruiting, and that Matthew was working flat out in the vestry just now.   Elgan remarks that it must be hard to live on Jobseekers allowance, but
"That will be cash-in-hand"
Garry says that Mathew will have cash-in-hand on top.
Dai is in a great hurry to leave"
Dai rushes off, having heard this information.
Some time has passed before Tyler awakens . . .
The shadows have lengthened when Tyler wakes from his doze;
. . . and makes a horrifying discovery
then he looks into the pram, and finds with horror that Greta has disappeared.
Tyler calls her name . . .
He runs around the park, frantically shouting Greta’s name,
. . . but answer came there none
but predictably she does not reply.
Gwyneth appears, with the baby
He takes out his phone to call the police, but then someone emerges from a shelter – it is Gwyneth, who is carrying Greta.
Tyler is furious;  “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he shouts.
"She was crying"
Gwyneth alleges that she was crying, and Tyler could not be woken, so she changed the baby’s nappy.
"I did you a favour!"
She maintains that she has done him a favour,
"Don't come near her again!"
but his reaction is, “Don’t come near her again – understand?”   Then he assures Greta that everything is all right now.
"Dani just can't relax"
Upstairs in the Deri, Garry wants a word with Elgan about Dani;  “She’s just doing too much – she can’t relax.”   The doctor advises him that she is ‘nesting’.
"She was threatening to build the cot"
“I had to hide the toolbox last night, as she was threatening to build the cot,” Garry adds, “And I think it’s a bit early for that.”
Gwern starts playing his computer game,
The computer game attracts Elgan's attention
and Elgan glances at the various spacecraft crossing the screen,
Gwern exterminates the spacecraft
which Gwern is blasting.   Garry suggest that a change of scene may be good for Dani, but she has started looking for baby shops in Bath already.
Elgan stares fixedly . . .
Elgan seems unable to keep his eyes off the screen.
Garry feels reassured that the doctor says Dani’s behaviour is natural, but Elgan seems strangely fixated by
. . . as Gwern continues his mission
the exploding space craft.
Dai take up position with his phone . . .
Dai positions himself inside the window of APD so that he can see Carl paying his employees for their day’s work;
. . . in order to record the money changing hands
he photographs the money being placed into Mathew’s hand.
Megan recalls when she had a pram
As Tyler manoeuvres the pram into the front door of number 7, Megan passes, and recalls how she had a big awkward pram for Gareth Wyn and Rhian.
"Isn't she pretty?"
“Isn’t she pretty?
"It's a pity she hasn't got a mother, though"
“It’s a pity she hasn’t got a mother, though.”
Tyler is offended by this
Tyler appears to take exception to this comment.
"You should be doing fewer shifts"
As Garry suggests to Dani that she should be doing fewer shifts behind the bar, Elgan appears unable to stop staring at the screen.   Dani says that he will not be happy until she lies on the sofa all day, but Garry only wants her to slow down.
"Did you hassle your wife like this?"
“Did you hassle your wife like this as well?” she asks the doctor, but then realises she should not have pried.
The doctor gets up to go
He decides that it is time he went, as he has a busy day tomorrow;  Garry says that is what Dani is like, speaking before she thinks, and Elgan agrees to just one more drink.
He cannot keep his eyes off the screen
He still keeps glancing uneasily at the screen.
Mathew brings Vicky a drink
In the Deri, Mathew brings Vicky a drink, and she complains that she has lost count of the number of times she has tried to sell herself, but senses he has something to tell her.
"Math the builder!"
May I introduce Math the builder?” he proudly tells her, “But it’s only temporary – I’m helping Carl in the vestry – and I’m moonlighting at the moment.”   Vicky tells him he is saving a lot of hassle, and that no one will grass on him.
Dai is eavesdropping
At the bar, Dai allows himself a wry smile.   Mathew tells her he made £30 in one afternoon, and then her phone rings;
"An interview – tomorrow?"
she is offered an interview for an office job, and says that she will have to hurry away to prepare, as the interview is tomorrow.
"Things are going our way, at last"
Mathew brightly concludes that things are really going their way, at last.
Dai intends to change that . . .
However, Dai has other ideas;  he gets out his phone
. . . with his photographic evidence
and looks at the pictures he has captured.
Tyler tries to tidy up
At number 7, Tyler is clearing up when Gwyneth pays a visit;
"I'm busy, Gwyneth"
again he is not pleased to see her, and says that he is busy.
She hands him Greta's things
She has brought back the bag of baby requisites, so he lets her in.   She apologises for earlier, but maintains that she was only trying to do the right thing, looking after Greta while he was asleep.
"Helping – by taking a baby away?"
“And you took her away!” is his reply, “Helping – by taking a baby away from its parent?   You’re lucky that I haven’t reported you.   You’re right that I shouldn’t have been asleep – but it’s none of your business!”
"A neglected child is everyone's business!"
Gwyneth alleges that a neglected child is everyone’s business, and it is he who should have been reported.
"And you're an example of how to raise children?"
Tyler laughs, “And you’re an example of how to raise children, are you?”   She says that she regrets not taking Greta to social services as she is not safe with Tyler.
Tyler shows her the door
He tells her to get out of the house.
"I expect Elgan knows about wine"
Garry studies the bottle of wine they have been drinking, and suggests that Elgan knows more about wine after living in Australia;  the doctor looks increasingly uncomfortable,
Gwern is asked to turn it down
and asks Gwern to turn down the volume.
"I don't think he should play that"
“I don’t think he should play that – how old is he?   Children like doing a lot of things they shouldn’t.”
Garry protests that it is only a game, but Elgan continues, “Have you considered what shooting does to his mind?”
"I'm his father, and it's my decision!"
Garry rather irritably replies that he is Gwern’s father and it is his decision.
"You're irresponsible, Garry"
Elgan describes him as irresponsible, insisting that it is not right;  “You’re responsible for that little boy –
"You're letting him down!"
“and you’re letting him down at the moment!”   With that he walks out of the flat,
They look astonished by Elgan
leaving Garry and Dani looking at each other in astonishment.
