4 October 2017

Cadno looks at an envelope . . .
Cadno sits at the kitchen table in Penrhewl and looks at an envelope
. . . addressed to Iwan
addressed to Iwan (DJ’s real name).
DJ sits in the armchair . . .
Meanwhile, DJ is sitting motionless in the armchair,
. . . with Dai and Diane becoming concerned about him
with both Dai and Diane worried about him, as he has not moved for hours.   Diane does not like the idea of him going to the crematorium on an empty stomach.
"He won't go to see a therapist
“I know he needs help, but he won’t go to see a therapist,” she whispers.
"Why are you whispering?"
DJ gets up and asks them what they are whispering about;  Diane points out that he ought to have something to eat,
"Shall I make you some toast?"
offering to make him some fresh toast,
"I don't want anything"
but he refuses.
"You should go to school today
Liv tells Tyler that he should go to school today;  “You didn’t go yesterday, and I don’t mind looking after Greta.”   He replies that he cannot leave her alone with Greta, and that she has to go and see social services.
"This is your chance to prove it"
“You promised last night you would do your best to be a good mother – this is your chance to prove that.”
"I don't want to be imnterrogated"
Liv whines that she does not want to go back there and be interrogated about where she has been and why she ran away.   “They will want to test me for drugs.   I’m clean, but I don’t want to go through that again – I want to forget all that and start again!
"I've worked so hard, Tyler"
“I’ve worked so hard to get where I am – I don’t want anything to mess it up.”
Tyler warns her that if she stays there with Greta and they find out, that will be the end of it, and they will all be in trouble –
"We could lose Greta for ever!"
“they could lose Greta for ever – and that is why she should see social services now.   “I told school that I had a sore throat yesterday – it’s worse today!”
Magan has arrived at Bryntirion in error
Megan arrives at Bryntirion, thinking that the funeral service was being held there;  she commiserates with DJ.
"Dr Pritchard has accused me of killing Mam"
He says that he would like to say a few words;  “Thank you for coming, Megan – maybe you haven’t heard that Dr Pritchard has accused me of killing Mam – but he gave her the tablets, no-one else.”
Megan finds this unsettling
Megan looks astonished at this,
"I won't rest until I see him in prison!"
as he goes on, “He is the guilty one.   I won’t rest until I see him, Elgan Pritchard, in prison!”
As Dai answers the door to the undertaker’s men,
"Is that true, Diane?"
Megan asks Diane if what he has said is true, and Diane shakes her head.
"Let me know how it went"
Tyler leaves a message for Liv to tell him how it went with social services.
The funeral service begins
At the crematorium, as the congregation sings to the tune Llef, the door opens and Dr Pritchard enters.
"You're very brave"
He sits with Anita, who comments that he is brave.
Diane welcomes everyone
Diane says a few words;  “Firstly, I’d like to thank you all for coming here today, on such a terribly sad day for us as a family.
DJ listens to the eulogy
DJ has kindly asked me to say a few words about Linda.   I only knew her for a year or so, but I’m grateful I had the chance to spend time in the company of the strongest woman I ever met.
"She was a hard-working woman"
She was a hard-working woman, a loving mother and a cherished companion – especially over a few sherries at night!   This strength continued when she faced her illness.
"She was determined to live life to the full"
During the darkest times, despite the pain, despite everything, she was determined to live life to the full.   She could be stubborn, but she was a woman who knew what she wanted.
"What would Linda say to us today?"
“If Linda was here now, what would she say to us today in our grief?
"She would tell me to go to the Deri for a drink"
“Well, she would tell me to stop talking, and go to the Deri for a drink.   She’d tell me to book that holiday to Jamaica – and she would tell us all not to waste a moment because life is much, much too short.
"Linda, we'll do our best"
“It’s more difficult to do than it sounds, but, dear Linda, we’ll do our best.”
The head teacher pays a visit to the 'unwell' Tyler
Tyler opens the front door to Gaynor, who remarks that a sore throat can be nasty;  he replies that he feels a bit better.   “But not well enough for school,” she says,
"Why don't we stop this pussyfooting around?"
“Look, why don’t we stop this pussyfooting around?   You don’t look or sound very ill to me – what’s going on?   What if every teacher did this?   The school would be in chaos!   This does not bode well when it comes to giving you more responsibility, as well as being head of year!
"What have you got to say?"
“What have you got to say?   I don’t want to hear any more of your excuses.”
"All right – I resign!"
“All right!” Tyler tells her, “I resign!”
The familiar tune of Calon Lan
As they sing another hymn to the tune Calon Lan
Diane notices someone . . .
Diane notices who is in the back row,
. . . and so does DJ
then DJ looks, and Dai warns him to remember where he is.
"Get out of here, now!"
Nevertheless, DJ goes to confront Elgan, ordering him to get out now.
“I’m here to express my condolences and show respect for your mother,” the doctor replies,
Dai points out that it would be wise for Elgan to go . . .
but DJ tells him to get out before he does something he regrets, and Dai agrees that Elgan had better leave,
. . . DJ makes sure that he does . . .
which he does.
. . . and Cadno looks very concerned
Cadno looks very concerned about this confrontation.
Dai worries what DJ will say next
Later, at the Deri, DJ is standing by the bar with a pint in his hand, and Dai is worried what he might say.
DJ accepts the offer of a lift from Cadno
Cadno comes in and asks DJ if he wants a lift, as she is passing Bryntirion.   He puts down his glass and leaves with her.
Ffion's soup is interrupted . . .
Gaynor visits Ffion, as she is having soup for her lunch;
. . . by Gaynor, who is anxious about the school's reputation
“How do I earn this school a good reputation when a head of department resigns after a month?” Gaynor demands, “He’s obviously stressed – taking care of Greta is too much for him – it was a rash decision.”  Ffion realises that Tyler cannot afford to lose a good salary,
"Could you have a word with him?"
and Gaynor wants her to have a word with him, to persuade him that he has been rather hasty.
"Well, if you cover me for lesson 5"
Ffion agrees, providing cover is found for lesson 5 for her, and comments, “Anything to promote the school’s reputation!”
Cadno brings DJ a cup of tea
At Bryntirion, Cadno brings DJ a cup of tea;  he wonders why she is staying,
"It's a letter from your mother"
but then she takes the letter from her bag.   “It’s a letter from your mother,” she says, “She asked me to give it to you when the time came.”
"When did you get it?"
He demands when she got this letter;  “Was it a couple of months before?   Or weeks?   When did you get it?”
"That doesn't matter – just open it"
Cadno is very reluctant to answer, simply asking him to open it.   “Your mother wanted you to know it was her choice – she didn’t want you to be hurt.”
"Did you give her the tablets?"
He asks if she gave his mother the tablets, as they were hidden in his drawer.
"You killed Mam!"
“You fetched them and gave them to her – you killed Mam!”
"No, I just put them within reach"
She explains that she fetched them and put them within reach, but DJ goes on, “You’ve been sitting in Penrhewl for weeks, letting everyone believe Elgan did it, without saying a word.
"I told you to stay away!"
“I told you the last time you had the tablets to stay away.   Why didn’t you listen?”
"Here comes the cavalry!"
Tyler opens the door to Ffion, commenting, “The cavalry, is it?” and she decides to put the kettle on.
Tyler's mind is made up
“You’re not going to twist my arm – my mind is made up.   I’m going to stay at home and raise Greta – it’s what I should have done from the start.
He has his doubts about Liv
“Liv is back – she’s with the social workers – she has to be tested to show that she’s clean, but I don’t know if she is.”
Liv has crept quietly into the front door
Liv quietly comes in through the front door and listens as Tyler continues, “The stress of worrying is too much – I don’t want Greta to have the same upbringing as Dani, Liv and me.   Moving from one hovel to the next, not knowing if we’d sleep in a bed.”
"You need a job that pays a living wage"
Ffion points out that is even more reason to keep a job that pays a living wage, and pleads with him not to tender his resignation.
"Have you quit your job?"
Liv comes in and asks, “Have you quit your job?   You think I’m a rubbish mother!   Resigning is stupid!”
"What did social services say?"
She tells him that social services have found that she is clean, as she told him,
"It's fine for me to live here with you"
and that it is fine to come back and live with him, so there is no need for him to give up his job.
"Right, see you at school tomorrow"
Ffion thinks this is her cue to leave, and expects to see Tyler at school tomorrow.
Cadno explains what happened
Cadno explains to DJ, “Your mother phoned me that morning – she had soiled the bed and couldn’t lie there until you came home.   I thought she needed help to change the sheets, but she begged me to fetch those tablets.
"She wanted to go with dignity"
She wanted me to help her to go with dignity – you understand that, don’t you?”
DJ does not move a muscle
DJ sits motionless and makes no reply.
"She asked me to stay with her until the end"
“She wrote the letter and asked me to stay with her until the end.   The plan was for you to come home, think she had gone in her sleep, and then find the letter.   But Elgan arrived, so I panicked and took the letter with me.
"I've been stuck with the damn thing ever since!"
“I’ve been stuck with the damn thing ever since, knowing your mother wanted you to read it.   I couldn’t give it to you without facing interrogation – but in the crem today, when I saw how you were grieving, I couldn’t bear it any longer!   So please, read the letter.”
"You had no right!"
“You had no right,” rages DJ, but Cadno stresses that it was what Linda wanted, and she was ready.
"But I wasn't ready!"
“I wasn’t ready!” he snarls, “Can’t you see that?   I offered to help her when the time, but I couldn’t do it, because it was Mam.   No matter how much she said she was ready, she was still my mother – and I’d do anything to hold her hand again.   You’ve taken that away from me – if it wasn’t for you she’d still be here today.”
He tears the envelope into pieces . . .
He tears the envelope into pieces and throws it to the floor;
. . . which Cadno retrieves from the floor
Cadno scrambles to pick up all the pieces, as he tells her, “I don’t want words on paper – I want my mother – so go to hell!
"Go home to the boys – while you have the chance!"
I hope they lock you up – perverting the course of justice – manslaughter – there is a choice!   You’d better go home to the boys, while you’ve got the chance.   Nobody is going to prison on your behalf this time.”
"Have you seen DJ?"
In the café, Gaynor tells Diane that Cadno gave DJ a lift home.
Elgan passes outside the window
Elgan walks past outside and looks at Gaynor.
"I was a bit hasty earlier"
Then Tyler comes rushing in;  “Look, I was a bit hasty earlier – sorry.”
Gaynor smiles as she tells him, “Let’s forget all about today – I had a grand-daughter who was adopted.
"I understand what you're going through"
“I understand what you’re going through – all the uncertainty.   But please be honest with me – I’m not totally unreasonable.”
"What?"
As Gaynor leaves, Tyler receives a phone call, imparting some startling news which makes him rush out of the café.
Liv is cuddling Greta
Liv is cuddling the baby when he arrives home;  “Bye, Liv!” he tells her. “You’re not allowed to be alone with her, are you?
"You lied – you're not allowed here!"
“Find another place to live – social services will find a place.   You lied to me about staying here – you’re not allowed here, are you?”
"I just wanted the chance to be a mother"
“But I just wanted the chance to be a mother to Greta, that’s all,” she whines.
"You have to go!"
Tyler is glad that she is clean, he is proud of her, but she has to go.   “Can I see her tomorrow?” Liv asks, and he replies that it must be in the morning, before he goes to work.
"But that's not long enough"
She argues that it is not long enough,
"Do you want to see her or not?"
but he gives her the ultimatum, “Do you want to see her or not?”   She leaves the house.
"I wanted to be alone"
Diane returns home to find DJ looking at the funeral order of service;  he tells her that she wanted to be alone.   “I understand that Cadno brought you home,” says Diane, and she goes to get changed.
He sees a piece of the envelope
DJ sees that one piece of the envelope has been left behind;
He thinks about the letter . . .
he picks it up and thinks about it.
. . . which Cadno is trying to reassemble
Meanwhile, on the kitchen table at Penrhewl, Cadno attempts to piece together the letter, but hides it when she hears someone coming;   it is Bobi and Arthur.
She promises the boys whatever they want
She tells them they can have whatever they like for dinner – “Sausages, burgers, chips, anything!
"You're the best children in the world!"
“You are the best children in the world!” and she hugs them both.
