11 October 2017

"Are you sure you don't know?"
Diane visits Penrhewl to speak to Cadno, as Dai is on his way down to the police station to report DJ missing.   “Are you sure you don’t know where he went?” she asks,
"I just hope he is all right"
and Cadno replies that she does not, but hopes that DJ is all right.
Diane goes on, “He picked up his mother’s ashes, apparently, and there has been no sign of him since.   Dai is worried that he’s going off the rails.”
"I may have an idea where he is"
Cadno thinks for a moment, then says, “Don’t lose your temper, but I may have an idea where he is.”
She takes the reassembled letter
Picking up the letter which she pieced together, she leaves with Diane.
Tyler is glad to see Iolo back
Iolo returns to number 7, and it transpires that he has been on a stag weekend to Budapest;  Tyler is very pleased to see him.
"The best beer in Bucharest!"
Iolo gives him a couple of bottles of the best beer in Budapest, and has a teddy for Greta.
"You haven't seen Siôn yet, then?"
“Oh, so you haven’t seen Siôn yet?” says Tyler, “Liv has taken Greta – I would have texted you, but there was nothing you could have done from there.”
The news stuns Iolo
Iolo is stunned and sits down, asking what happened;  “I messed up – I thought I knew best,” replies Tyler,
"Goodness knows if we'll ever see her again!"
“And now, goodness only knows if we’ll ever see her again!”
Debbie has gone to Y Felin, having been told about the gift from the shop;
Debbie takes exception to all this charity
“It was charity!” she insists, “When is this going to end, Siôn?   Vicky has been going to a food bank – you’ve put a roof over her head, and now charity from the shop – she’s not a refugee!”
"Well, she doesn't have anywhere to live"
Siôn points out that she does not have anywhere to live,
"She could have come back to us!"
but Debbie continues, “She could have come back to us, but she’d rather accept charity from people who want brownie points in heaven!”   Siôn maintains that is not fair, and that Vicky is not there to ease his social conscience.
"Things have gone too far"
Vicky concedes that things have gone too far, and her mother tells her that if she came home, money would not be so tight.
"If you accepted Mathew didn't steal your money!"
Vicky shouts, “If you accepted that Mathew didn’t steal your money, we wouldn’t have to live on charity!”
"I do accept that"  (or she says she does)
Debbie replies she does accept that, but Vicky knows that she does not believe that.
Mathew senses a rather strained atmosphere
Then Mathew returns, announcing that he has good news at last;  he did not get the job, but has been offered a flat in Llanelli.
"It's near Burry Port – by Cefn Sidan Beach"
“Well, near Burry Port – I know that you don’t want to go to the one in Swansea, but this isn’t as far, and it’s lovely there in the summer – it’s right by Cefn Sidan Beach,
"I think Nicky would love it!"
“and I think Nicky would love it!”
Cadno was right about DJ's location
Dai’s car pulls up on a cliff top, within sight of DJ,
He is sitting, motionless, on a bench
who is sitting on a bench;  as Cadno walks towards him, Dai comments, “I told you she knew something, didn’t I?”
"DJ is all right – that's all that matters!"
Diane tells him that DJ is all right and that is all that matters, but he still insists that she has something to hide.
"This is where he was going to give her the tablets"
Cadno says, “Linda told me they came here for a picnic, and this is where he was going to give her the tablets, but he changed his mind – he couldn’t do it.”
"No, let me do this, Dai"
She stops Dai from marching down to DJ, asking that he leave this to her.
She walks towards DJ
DJ is still sitting, motionless, with the urn of ashes;
"You had fond memories of this place"
“Your mother told me you had fond memories of this place,” she says.
"Yes, before you took them away from me!"
He agrees that he had, before she took them away from him.
She sits down with him
She sits down with him.
Mathew shows Vicky the flat
Mathew shows Vicky the flat on the laptop;  Flat 8, Peyton Way, Burry Port.   It is on the bus route into town,
"Miles from anywhere!"
which Debbie takes as meaning it is miles from anywhere, and asks Vicky if she is really considering it, wondering how she is going to cope, without a job.
"We shall manage somehow"
Mathew answers that there are benefits, and they will manage somehow.
"What if I said you can come back to Maes-y-Deri?"
“What if I said you were welcome to move back to Maes-y-Deri?” enquires Debbie, “The three of you, like before.   I’ve been thinking – you wouldn’t have stolen that money, it’s not like you, and you’ve shown how decent you are by sticking with these two.”
"You're admitting you were wrong?"
She even goes so far as to admit that she was wrong, and Vicky stresses that they cannot carry on like this;
"I'm fed up with the worry, Math!"
although it would be nice to have a flat of their own, she is fed up with the worry.
"If that is what Vicky wants, then, yes!"
Mathew eventually capitulates;  “If that is what Vicky wants, that is fine – thanks, Debbie.”
"The social worker went bonkers"
Tyler tells Iolo that the social worker went bonkers when he phoned them, but he did not tell them that he let Liv look after Greta while he was at school;
"I told them I went to peg out the washing"
“I told them I went to peg out the washing, and she saw her chance.   But they were right, weren’t they?   Greta should not have been left alone with her.   I was stupid enough to believe her – she promised the world!   I phoned and texted, but she just doesn’t want to know!   I don’t even know if they have a roof over their heads.”
These biscuits trouble Iolo . . .
Tyler has been eating biscuits,
. . . and he has to clear up the crumbs
and Iolo feels compelled to sweep up the crumbs from the carpet.   “You must have been lost without her!” he sympathises,
"What are we going to do?"
“What are we going to do?”   Tyler has no answer to this.
Mark settles down with his pint . . .
In the Deri, Mark has just started to drink his pint when Debbie tells him they have a party to arrange;
. . . when he is disturbed by Debbie
“Vicky and Nicky are coming home!” she announces, “I want to prepare a big spread to spoil them – sandwiches, pop, posh crisps!”   Then she adds that Mathew is coming too;
"We'll have to hide our valuables!"
“We’ll have to hide all our valuables.”   He warns her not to start that again.
Mark is dragged away from his pint
She drags him off to do some shopping.
"I wanted to enjoy every day she had left"
As they sit overlooking the Bristol Channel, DJ explains, “After that afternoon with Mam, I just wanted to enjoy every day she had left with her, and if it wasn’t for you, who knows how many days I would have had – they all counted.”
"The pain was too  much for her"
Cadno emphasises that the pain was too much for Linda, and she could not live with it any more.   “Are you saying that I’m selfish for wanting to spend more time with her?” he demands, but she tells him that it was hard for her too, having to get those tablets, knowing that Linda had chosen to die right there, in front of her
"You're braver than me"
He admits, “You’re braver than me – you always have been.   She must have gone, hating me for being such a coward,” he laments,
Cadno takes out the letter . . .
but Cadno insists that nothing could be further from the truth, and then takes the letter from her pocket.
. . . and he asks her to read it
She reads it to him;  “Dear Iwan, I hope now that you’re reading this that I’ve crossed to the other side, that I’m not in pain any more.   Please forgive me for going behind your back like this;  I didn’t want you to suffer the pain of facing the end with me.
"I'm glad you refused and that you weren't there"
“I should never have asked you to assist.   Before you start blaming yourself for refusing, I’m glad you refused and that you weren’t there.
"DJ with the big mischievous smile"
“This way, I will remember that kindhearted, happy DJ with that big, mischievous smile on his face – the DJ who wanted the world to be a better place.
"Thank you for everything"
“Thank you for everything – you filled my final months with joy, so I can depart a content woman.   All my love for ever, Mam.
"Please buy a new coat, will you?"
“PS.   I can’t leave you much, but please buy a new coat, will you?   I’m ashamed to see that hole in the pocket.”
It seems that Linda had a very valid point
DJ smiles, as he looks down at that very hole in his Awyr Iach jacket.
Iolo displays a touch of the old OCD
Iolo is methodically arranging the plates on the dresser,
A stag weekend was not a good idea
and tells Tyler, “I don’t think going on a stag weekend was my wisest idea!   I’ve got a hangover from four days’ drinking.   I’m so sorry – if I hadn’t been so selfish and left you with Greta, she might still be here.”
"Liv was determined to leave"
Tyler tells him not to be silly, as this is not his fault;  Liv was determined to leave, and he messed up, but is so glad that Iolo is back.
"I want to come home!"
Iolo replies that it will be nice to sleep in his own bed;  “I want to come home!”
"You're the only one who can get me through this"
Tyler maintains that Iolo is the only one who can get him through this.
Vicky and Mathew are on their way out of Y Felin
At Y Felin, Vicky and Mathew carry all their belongings downstairs, and apologise for imposing upon Siôn.   “You’ve been good company, and it’s nice to have a child around,” he replies,
"If you ever need somewhere to stay . . ."
“If you ever need somewhere to stay, you’re always welcome here.”
A thank you card from Nicky
Vicky hands him a thank you card from Nicky, and Mathew promises that when they get some money, they will take him out for a meal.   They leave, and Siôn wishes them good luck.
Now Siôn learns that Iolo is not coming back . . .
Then he has a text from Iolo;  “Dad, I’ve gone straight home to sort things out with Tyler,”
. . . and the house seems very empty
and he suddenly feels rather lonely.
"Thank you for being there for Mam"
On the cliff top, DJ thanks Cadno for being there for his mother;  she does not think that she would do the same again.   Although it was the right thing to do for Linda, a lot of people have been hurt.
"Who knows what Elgan will do?"
“Who knows what Elgan will do when he finds out?   But I have to take responsibility for that.”
"Come with me"
He asks if she will come with him to say goodbye to Mam;  “She loved the sea.”
Debbie appears to have gone rather over the top
At Maes-y-Deri, Vicky and Mathew arrive to find the table laden with food, and Vicky says they did not have to make this fuss.
Mathew will not take a can from Mark
Mathew reports that Nicky is fast asleep, but refuses a can from Mark.
"I'm going to stay at Penrhewl"
“I’m not staying,” he tells them, “I’ve arranged to stay with Eifion at Penrhewl for now.”   Vicky protests vehemently at this,
"I'll never feel at home here"
but he responds, “I’ll never feel at home here after everything that has happened – you’ve been so worried about Nicky, and if we can eat or buy nappies – It’s not right.   I promise to find a job, and one day I will support the three of us.
"Keeping you and Nicky safe is all that matters"
“Keeping you and Nicky safe is all that matters to me.
Mark thanks him for looking after them, as they really appreciate it.
"You will be safe and warm here"
Mathew assures Vicky that she will be safe and warm here, and he will see her tomorrow,
Vicky is not ver pleased about it
but she looks downcast as he leaves.
Again, Debbie goes overboard
Debbie makes a great show of welcoming her home.
"Are you OK?   And Greta?"
As Tyler is in the kitchen, the phone rings, and he discovers that it is Liv;  Are you are OK?   And Greta?
Looks as if Liv is after money
“Money?   Yes, what ever you want – if you want me to leave you alone, I will – whatever you want!   Yes, I know where that is – I’ll see you tomorrow.”
"Did I hear you talking to someone?"
Iolo comes down, thinking that he heard the phone,
"It was the school"
and Tyler lies that it was the school, who want him in early tomorrow morning.
They walk to the foreshore
DJ and Cadno walk down to the rocky foreshore at the foot of the cliff,
"Thanks for coming with me"
and he thanks her for accompanying him.
"Mam, thanks for the kind words"
He says, “Mam, thank you for the kind words and for looking after me.   I’m glad you had someone you could turn to in your final hours – that you had a Good Samaritan who understood how much pain you were in, and was willing to help.
"No-one will find out"
I promise no-one will find out who gave you the tablets – we’ll keep that between us.   So long, Mam – love you for ever.”
He scatters his mother's ashes . . .
He scatters the ashes at the water’s edge.
. . . and stands alone by the water
