"Financial advisors are only after one thing"
In the Deri, Dai and Diane are awaiting the arrival of John, the financial advisor;  Dai is of the opinion that the only side financial advisors are on is their own.   Diane replies, “All that matters is finding the cash, so we can pay the fine.”
Kath has heard the gossip
Then Kath saunters in, remarking, “What’s this about APD having a heck of a fine?   You should be grateful I raised Mark to be so honest, or you’d be in even worse mess!”
"He should be there by now"
Diane receives a phone call from Sara, wanting to know where DJ is, and says that he should be at Awyr Iach by now.   Diane will phone him to find out.   “I should have woken him up, and made sure he had a proper breakfast before going to work,” she fusses,
"Probably snoring like a pig!"
and Dai predicts that he is probably snoring away.
Diane can get no answer, so she tells Dai that they are leaving,
"You haven't got time for that, Dai!"
not even allowing him to drink his cup of coffee,
Kath does not like things going to waste
so Kath drinks it for him.
Eifion is worried about a sick cow
At Penrhewl, Eifion wants Cadno to phone the vet about a sick cow, but she refuses as she does not want to be too hasty, deciding they will give her a bit longer.   Eifion leaves for the village, and Cadno looks worried.
"Do you have something for an upset stomach?"
Gaynor is suffering from an upset stomach, and buys some tablets from the shop;
"Isn't that right, doctor?"
Eileen suggests that she should be in bed, and seeing Dr Pritchard by the door, asks for his confirmation of this.   She points out that Gaynor should stay away from people for 48 hours,
"That is the usual medical advice"
and Elgan agrees that is the medical advice.
“I can’t miss two days of school!” Gaynor protests,
"The governors wouldn't be happy"
but Eileen maintains that if the pupils caught it, the governors would not be happy.   Gaynor politely thanks them for their advice, and leaves the shop.
"I'm sure I had a £10 note"
Vicky comes in for some baby requisites, but finds her purse empty, so asks Eileen if she can pay later.
"Sorry, we don't give credit"
“Sorry, we don’t give credit,” is Eileen’s terse answer.   Elgan offers to lend Vicky the money, but she refuses,
"Nice to see people being so supportive"
and then he tells Eileen that it is nice to see people being so supportive.
Eileen replies that small businesses cannot afford to give credit;
He leaves his Western Post on the counter
“But you can afford to lose customers?” he says, puts down his paper and walks out.
Back home at Bryntirion, Diane reports that DJ’s bed has not been slept in, and she phones his mobile, leaving a message,
"DJ, we're worried about you"
“Where are you?   We are worried about you – you’re meant to start work in Awyr Iach today.”
Dai grabs the phone
Dai grabs the phone from her, and says, “Now, listen here!
"This AWOL business doesn't wash with me!"
“This AWOL business doesn’t wash with me.   I know you feel guilty, but this namby-pamby business has to stop!”
"What your father is trying to say is . . ."
At this point, Diane retrieves the phone and continues, “What your father is trying to say is that, whatever is bothering you, we’ll sort it out.   Phone us, please.”
"That won't help at all, Dai!"
She tells Dai that giving the boy a telling-off will not help at all;  he has not been right since the funeral.
"Cadno might know"
Dai suggests that Cadno might know what is bothering him, as they disappeared together after the funeral
"You may be right"
and Diane agrees he may be right.
Vicky is looking for Mathew
Vicky returns to Y Felin, shouting for Mathew, but Siôn informs her that he has gone for an interview,
"The Jobcentre found an interview for him"
and may have some good news later.   Vicky then leaves again.
"Redirect my calls here"
Gaynor is on the phone to the school, telling them to redirect all her calls, when Elgan arrives.
"Checking up on me?"
She asks if he has come to check up on her, and concedes that she will get peace and quiet here.   He tells her that he has come over to clear the air;  he did not want to leave on bad terms.
"I'm leaving at the end of the week"
“I’m leaving at the end of the week – but I haven’t told anyone else, so keep it under your hat.”
Gaynor does not at all look happy at this news,
"If I couldn't convince you . . ."
as he continues, “If I couldn’t convince you of my innocence, what hope have I got with everyone else?   I don’t blame you for the way you reacted – I understand.   A doctor, being mistrusted – it would take years to clear my name.”
"Stay for a cup of tea"
She invites him to have a cup of tea, unless he is afraid of catching something.
"I've been speaking to Dai and Diane"
Eifion returns to Penrhewl, telling Cadno that he has been speaking to Dai and Diane;
"DJ's gone AWOL"
“Have you got any idea where DJ could be?   He’s gone AWOL – you were very supportive of him after the funeral.   They thought maybe you would know something about his state of mind.”
"We just had a chat"
She simply replies that he was upset, she took him back to Bryntirion and they had a chat, as she tried to help him to see things more clearly.
"He hasn't been right since then"
Eifion says that he has not been right since then;  “He will not talk to them, locks himself in his room, stays out all night.   What did you tell him?   Something must have happened, or have been said, as he did not turn up for work this morning.”
Eifion can see that something is the matter
Cadno resents the accusation that she said something, sits down at the table,
"I gave Linda those tablets – not Elgan"
and then finally confesses, “I gave Linda those tablets – not Elgan.   It was supposed to be so simple –
"It all got out of control!
“it has all got out of control,
Eifion is shocked by the revelation
“and I don’t know what to do!”
"A break will do me good"
Elgan tells Gaynor that he does not have another job lined up, but a break will do him good after all that has happened.
He is distancing himself from recent events
“That wasn’t a dig at you, but for my own sake, I’d better distance myself from this recent stress.”   She says that she will think twice before making ridiculous accusations again.
"We had a lot of fun, though"
“We had a lot of fun, though,” Elgan adds, wistfully,
"You should really go to the police"
and Gaynor urges him to go to the police, if he really believes that DJ did it.
"She wanted to go with a bit of dignity"
Cadno explains to Eifion, “She knew the end was near, and she wanted to go with a bit of dignity, with someone by her side.”
"How can you watch Elgan suffer?"
He demands how she can stand by and watch Elgan suffer and lose everything.
"I could go to prison!"
She maintains that it is because of the boys – she could go to prison.
"I hope he hasn't done anything stupid!"
Eifion insists that DJ takes priority right now;  “For your sake, I hope he hasn’t done anything stupid!
"How could you do this to us?"
“How could you do this to us?”   She replies that she thought she was doing the right thing, by helping someone in need – she did not think anyone would find out.
Cadno is distraught
Eifion is incredulous and walks out.
Vicky picks up the money . . .
As Vicky is walking along the street, she notices someone over by the shop drop some money,
. . . and hands it to the rightful owner
and calls them back to hand it to them.   Eileen, who has witnessed this, looks rather sheepish.
"OK, thank you, Eifion"
Dai has just had a phone call from Eifion, informing him that Cadno has no idea where DJ could be.   He insists that they are not waiting around here, but are going to do something.
"My son's out there, and his head's all over the place!"
“My son’s out there and his head’s all over the place!”
"He wouldn't do anything stupid?"
Diane is horrified at the thought that DJ would do anything stupid;  Dai summarises, “He’s just lost his Mam, he’s doing his best to ruin the doctor, and he’s gone AWOL.
"If that doesn't put you on a cliff edge, what will?"
“If that doesn’t put you on a cliff edge, what will?
They learn that DJ was at the undertaker's earlier
Then the phone rings;  it is the undertaker, who reports that when DJ came in to collect his mothers ashes, about an hour ago, he left his wallet behind.   Dai comments that grief plays all kind of tricks on you;
They will see if they can find out more
he says that they will go and fetch the wallet, and perhaps the undertaker can tell them more.
Eileen has called Vicky to the shop . . .
Eileen has called Vicky to the shop,
. . . and presents her with a gift
where she has a surprise, to apologise for her attitude earlier;  she realises she could have been kinder.
"I'll pay you back, Eileen"
Vicky is adamant that she will pay her back, but Eileen says there is no need.
“I know that you and Mathew are looking for jobs and for somewhere to stay – it’s not easy these days.”
"The Joneses don't accept charity!"
However, when Kath comes into the shop, she objects to this gift, alleging that the Joneses do not accept charity, and that while Vicky’s mother lives with Mark, Vicky is family.
She is quite adamant that she will pay
Eileen is reluctant to accept any money, but Kath is most insistent on paying her.
"You're willing to steal food from the allotment"
“I don’t understand you – you’re willing to steal food from the allotment, but you won’t let Vicky accept a gift,” says Eileen.
"We're not here to make you feel better!"
Kath becomes irate;  “I know us Joneses are not perfect – but we haven’t been put on this earth to make you feel better!” and she marches off.
Elgan is reluctant to accuse DJ . . .
Elgan tells Gaynor, “I know you’re only trying to help, but if I put DJ through any more heartbreak . . .
. . . and does not have any evidence
“anyway, I don’t have any evidence, I could be wrong.”
Gaynor's stomach pains have not subsided
Gaynor is suffering more pains in her stomach, and admits that it is a weird feeling, saying goodbye for the last time.   He hopes she gets well soon, and wishes her the best of luck;
"I'm glad I met you"
he is glad that he met her.
Gaynor is on the verge of tears
As he leaves, she looks ready to burst into tears.
"I can't carry on like this much longer"
At Y Felin, Siôn finds Vicky also in tears;  she admits, “I can’t carry on like this for much longer, Siôn,
"He may come home with a job"
but he reassures her that Mathew may well come home with the job.
"I'm fed up with living on charity"
She adds, “The minimum wage doesn’t go very far – and I’m fed up with living on charity, tired of scrimping and scraping.”
Siôn sits at the table with her, and enquires what are her options;
"I doubt they'd take Mathew back"
“Go back to Maes-y-Deri,” she says, “That’s an option for me, but I doubt they’d take Mathew back.   I don’t want to live without him.   I don’t know what to do any more, Siôn!   I don’t expect life to be a bed of roses, but there aren’t even a few petals to dull the pain of the sharp thorns!”
"The vet took the cow away"
As Eifion washes his hands, he tells Cadno that the vet has taken the cow away.
"If you'd seen the state Linda was in"
She pleads, “If you had seen the condition Linda was in,” and he stresses that she hates to see anyone suffer, animal or human.
"What if the police come here?"
“What if the police come here?   What are we going to do,” she demands, “I could get a long stretch in prison.   You’ll look after the boys, won’t you?   Don’t let them grow up hating me.”
"We shall get through this"
Eifion assures her that whatever happens, they will get through this, and that she is a good person.
The financial advisor is waiting for them
At Bryntirion, the phone rings, but it is only John, the financial advisor, who is waiting for them in the Deri.   Dai is sorry that he did not call to cancel, and stresses that he still needs the money,
"Up to my eyes in personal matters"
but is up to his eyes in personal matters at the moment.   He will rearrange their meeting.
Then he decides that he will phone the police, to tell them his son is missing out there somewhere.
"We don't know he is missing"
Diane replies that they do not know that, but he does not want DJ doing anything stupid.   She urges that he should not rush into anything, as DJ might just need some time alone.
"I shall go down to the police station"
“No, I’m not going to phone the police,” Dai exclaims, “I’m going down to the police station to talk to them.   You don’t have to come – I’m his father and I’m going to sort it out myself!”
Diane dreads what will happen
Diane fears that this might not end well.
