8 December 2017

Dai is not going to be happy about this
Debbie is on the phone to Cwrtmynach Builders;  she says she is happy with their quote, and asks when they can start.
"They're better than APD!"
She tells Mark that they promised to finish the flat by Christmas;  “They’re better than APD!”
Mark is in some pain
Mark is suffering with cramps and says that his taxi is due to arrive in about 20 minutes.
"Are you sure you don't want me to drive you?"
“Are you sure you don’t want me to drive you?   It’s no bother,” she says,
"You've got enough on your plate"
but he protests that she has enough on her plate at the moment.   “Let me come with you, please, Mark.”
"I'm scared, Debs"
He agrees, and says that he is scared of the dialysis, and the treatment today;  “I’ve been blocking it out – but I can’t any more.   I’m not allowed any breakfast before the treatment.”
"The post is here"
Non comes in and tells them the post has arrived;  as Debbie says she will cancel the taxi,
A letter is addressed to her
Non is sorting through the mail and finds one item addressed to her.
"I don't know how he's going to get through this"
“I don’t know how he’s going to get through this,” worries Debbie, “He’s so weak sometimes.”
"Maybe there's good news round the corner"
“Try to stay positive – maybe there is good news around the corner – a donor,” replies Non,
The news appears to be good
looking quite confident.
Dani has had a delivery of sleeping bags for the baby;
"We're not going camping!"
“Sleeping bags?   We’re not going camping with the baby!” is Garry’s response.   She tells him that babies sleep in them all the time,
"Sara said they're essential"
and Sara told her that they are an essential.   “Gwern didn’t have anything like that,” he points out, and she says that things have changed since then.
"The prices have changed as well!"
He looks at the invoice and tells her that prices have changed as well;  “Do you want the best for this baby?” she demands, “You have to be willing to spend!”
"You mustn't overdo things"
and he advises her not to overdo things as she is tired.
She looks defiantly at him
She sneers at him.
"That was Uncle Morris's recipé
Gaynor enjoyed the eggs which Elgan cooked for her;  he tells her they were Uncle Morris’s recipé.
"He was full of stories"
“He was a good man – he’d travelled the world and was full of stories,” he says.   He apologises for not clearing up after himself, but she tells him that he is spending too much time here.
"Managing without the whisky?"
“So you’re managing without the whisky, are you?” she asks, “I was wondering – would you mind if I printed off some stuff I found on the Internet about ex-soldiers?”
"I'm all right, Gaynor!"
He protests once more that he is all right
Dani takes a sniff at the cheese
Dani is in the shop, and Eileen thanks her for the invitation to the baby shower.
"Come to the café!"
Non comes in, looking very happy, and instructs Colin, “Come to the café – I’ve got something to tell you!”   He says that he cannot, as he is working.
"She didn't buy anything, did she?"
Eileen notices that Non did not buy anything, and Colin improvises that she wanted mussels, but they do not sell them.
"No, I can't sell this to you"
Then Eileen informs Dani that she is not allowed to sell unpasteurised cheese to pregnant women.
"It's for Garry!"
Dani replies rather abruptly that it is for Garry, pays for it and quickly hurries from the shop,
"I want to talk to you – now!"
on the way meeting Tyler and telling him that she urgently wants a chat.
"The thought of mussels has turned my stomach"
Colin tells Eileen that he wants to pop out for ten minutes for some fresh air, as the thought of mussels has turned his stomach.
He heads directly to the café
He goes straight across the road to the café.
"Is Elgan all right?"
Garry asks Gaynor how Elgan is, as he was hoping to have a game of squash, but Elgan has not answered his text.   “He’s not struggling again, is he?
"He told me about his depression"
“He talked to me a few weeks ago, after the accident, about his feelings of depression.”
Gaynor insists that he is fine
She assures him that the doctor is fine.
"I had a feeling we would be a match"
In the café, Colin reads the letter Non has received, and is very surprised;  She says, “I had a feeling we would be a match – should I tell Mark?   They’re on their way to the hospital.”
She explains to Colin that he would still have to undergo dialysis for a period of time after the transplant, and she has to have further tests,
"You must wait until you know for sure"
so he advises that there is no point in saying anything yet, but should wait until she knows what the situation is.
"But I've told them so many lies"
Non is concerned that the family will not want to know her as she has told so many lies.
"Do you think they'll care about that?"
“Do you really think they would care about that, when they find out that you’re a match?” he replies.   She admits that she is scared, but he encourages her to wait until Mark has received his treatment,
"Then we'll talk about the next step"
and then they will meet to talk about the next step.
"The way they treated me over there!"
Dani is moaning to Tyler about the treatment she received in the shop,
"You may be a bit hormonal"
but he suggests that she may be a bit hormonal;
Dani unleashes her fury
she explodes, “You’re just like them, aren’t you?   I’m not hormonal – or tired!   I just speak my mind,
"Right, if you say so, Dani"
“that’s all, OK?”
"When can he start his dialysis?"
At the hospital, Debbie asks when Mark can start his dialysis;  “We’ll have to see that the incision into the abdomen is healing first,” the doctor replies, “And then you will have to learn how to use the catheter and the dialysis machine.
The doctor explains what will happen
The nurses will talk you through that, and after that, with a bit of luck, you’ll be able to start dialysis treatment at home.”
She assures Debbie that they will have plenty of information about the process, and points out that some patients find it difficult to walk for a while after this treatment.
Mark is very worried
Mark looks very concerned, and the doctor wants to insert a cannula into his arm.
Elgan is on the whisky again
Elgan is drinking whisky in the Deri when Garry comes in;  “Oh, here he is – the Scarlet Pimpernel,” he says, “You didn’t fancy a game of squash this week, did you?”   Elgan replies that he has a busy week, and he has caught a bug.
"Killing germs, are you?"
“Killing germs, are you?” says Garry, pointing to the glass of whisky.
"I had a word with Gaynor"
He adds, “Look, I don’t want you to worry, but I had a word with Gaynor earlier.   She gave me the impression that things aren’t quite right.”   Elgan replies that Gaynor had no right to say anything.   He is told to calm down, as Garry only wanted to say that he is here to listen, if required.
"Why would I want to talk to you?"
“Why would I want to talk to you?” demands Elgan, “You don’t know when to keep your mouth shut!”
Elgan walks out on Garry
He finishes his drink and storms out.
"Sorry you had to come today"
Mark reports to Debbie that he cannot feel anything at the moment, and apologises that she had to come with him today;
"I'm glad I came,  Mark"
she is glad that she came.   “It was all going so well for us Joneses, wasn’t it?” he complains,
"I could be like this for years"
“You and me are together, Mam and Non in Cwmderi, Ricky and Vicky start sorting themselves out – and then this comes!   It’s spoiled everything!   I could be like this for years.”
"If we have to wait, that's what we'll do"
Debbie says that he might get a kidney sooner than he thinks;  “But if we have to wait for years, that’s what we’ll do.”
"I've got plenty of life in me yet, haven't I?"
Mark looks very frightened as he asks her, “I’ve got plenty of life in me yet, haven’t I?   I can’t bear to miss out on seeing Ricky grow up.”   Once again she stresses that he is going to be all right, and they say that they love each other.
"The anaesthetic has made you soft!"
“What would I do without you?” he wonders, “You’ve been like a saint with me this week.”   She replies that the anaesthetic has made him soft, calling her ‘Saint Debbie’.
"I'm going to put up the decorations . . ."
She will get the Christmas tree down from the attic and put up the decorations;  Mark does not think that he will be in any state to help,
". . . and you can write the cards"
so she gives him the job of writing cards.
At Llwyncelyn, Elgan has packed his bag, and leaves a note on the table;  he takes a final swig from his hip flask,
Elgan leaves the note, and his hip flask . . .
then leaves it with the note.
. . . also the keys . . .
He puts the house keys down on the sideboard
. . . and exits Llwyncelyn
and walks out of the house.
"Just keep them until the baby grows"
Dani has taken the sleeping bags out of the parcel, and panics because they are the wrong size;  “It doesn’t matter – keep them until the baby grows,” is Garry’s response.
"I'm a terrible mother!"
“I’m a terrible mother!” she exclaims, “I should have read the details on the website more carefully!”
"You're tired, Dani"
Garry tries to comfort her, saying that she is tired and has been up and down like a yo-yo.
"How about that special ice-cream?"
He suggests getting some ice cream – the special stuff she likes, with meringue in it.
"And doughnuts?"
“OK,” she whispers, “And doughnuts?
"Anything else you want?"
“And bananas too – I want bananas!”
In the chip shop flat, Non is wondering how she can behave normally at home now and keep the secret.
"You have to behave normally"
“You have to,” Colin replies, “If you tell Mark now, and then there are problems with the tests, it would be terrible.”
"What if I get cold feet again?"
“What if I get cold feet again?” she frets, and he agrees that, if it helps,
"I'm proud of you, Non!"
he will come with her when she has the tests, as he is proud of her – and Mark would be proud of her too.
"You ought to check on Elgan"
Garry sees Gaynor outside the shop and advises her to check that Elgan is all right;  “He had a go at me, and stormed out of the Deri.   I only said that we were worried about him.”
"Will you come to Llwyncelyn with me?"
She asks Garry to come to Llwyncelyn with her as she is concerned about what she might come across there.
Dani must wait for her ice-cream and doughnuts
“Right, I’ll come – and I shall tell Dani I had to fetch her special ice cream from Cwrtmynach.” Garry replies.
"Whatever you do – don't tell the truth!"
Colin advises Non that whatever she does, she must not be tempted to tell the truth;  “You need to be sure that you’re a suitable match before saying anything.”
"Thank you so much, Colin!"
She is very grateful to him for his help.
Dani takes out her frustration on the cooker
Dani is frantically scrubbing the cooker when Tyler comes to visit;  she also tells him that she is a terrible mother.
"I bought the wrong clothes for the baby . . ."
“I bought the wrong clothes for the baby – and now Garry has made an excuse to go out
". . . and Garry thinks I'm nuts!"
“because he thinks I’m nuts!”   He points out that being a parent is not a test, and everyone makes mistakes all the time;
"Remember that time in the park?"
he reminds her of the time he fell asleep in the park.
"I'm not cut out for this, Ty!"
“I just don’t think I’m cut out for this – I’m never going to live up to other people’s expectations!” she wails, but he asks since when has she cared about what other people think.
"All that matters is what you and Garry want"
He insists that people are trying to be supportive, and all that matters is what she and Garry want for the baby.
"We are OK, aren't we?"
“Things weren’t easy for us when we were growing up, but we’re OK, aren’t we?” she whimpers, and Tyler agrees.
He gives his sister a hug
He has brought her a little present, and gives her a hug.
Gaynor finds the hip flask
Back at home, Gaynor discovers the flask and the note;
She reads out the note
she reads it to Garry, “I want to look after you, but I can’t when everyone knows my business.   I know I have to sort myself out, but I’ll do it in my own way.”
"Answering machine"
Meanwhile, Garry  has been trying to contact Elgan’s phone, but only reaches the answering machine.
"Have you ever handled tinsel before?"
Non is decorating the Maes-y-Deri Christmas tree rather haphazardly;  “Have you ever handled tinsel before, or what?” asks Debbie.   Mark says that it looks lovely,
"Little sister can't do anything wrong in your eyes"
prompting Debbie to comment, “Little sister can’t do anything wrong in your eyes!”   Non tries to conceal her smile.
“It depends on what present she gets me, on our first Christmas together,” Mark answers,
"How about socks?"
and she says that she has got him something – socks.   “You can never have too many socks,” Mark tells her.
"We'll have a Christmas to remember!"
Debbie is of the opinion that they will have a Christmas to remember;  “And we will have a turkey – unlike the posh people who wanted a free range one from Cadno.
"You might have a transplant by next Christmas"
You never know, you might have had a transplant by next Christmas.”
Mark is wary about getting his hopes up;  “But we can hope, can’t we?” Debbie tells him,
Non agrees with this prophecy
and Non agrees wholeheartedly, again smiling broadly.
