Sioned and Ed go to the shop and ask Eileen if she has heard from the clinic yet. Eileen tells them that Jim needs time;

“Or the truth!” interrupts Sioned, but Eileen warns her that there is no telling what he will do if he hears about the biopsy. “So I have to deal with it, and you have to deal with keeping the secret!” moans Sioned.

| "Don't stop gossiping because of me!" |
Jim comes downstairs, commenting, “You don’t have to stop gossiping because I came in – is there any more in today’s paper?”

| "You can carry on discussing secrets now!" |
When told that there is not, he goes back up, saying, “You can carry on discussing secrets now!”

| "Well, I'm going up there to tell him!" |
Sioned decides she is going straight up there to tell him the truth, but is restrained by Ed and her mother; then she apologises, wishing that everything could be all right.

| "Oh, Ffion, I've put you down for next Monday!" |
Ffion arrives at the salon for her appointment, but finds that Sheryl has put her down for next Monday;

“Sorry, Ffion, I don’t know where my head’s at!” she exclaims, and looks ready to burst into tears. She gives the excuse that she is not feeling 100%,

| "You ought to see the doctor" |
and Ffion suggests that she should see the doctor.
“But doctors don’t always give you good news, so they?” replies Sheryl,

| "If it's that serious, you should" |
and Ffion concludes that if she thinks the matter is that serious, she should go.

| "Yes, I'll see if they can fit me in" |
“I might close for half an hour and see if they can fit me in,” concedes Sheryl.

| Somewhere, Siôn has found a a sweet trolley! |
Gwyneth is surprised when Siôn wheels into Y Felin a sweet trolley, for the wedding. She wonders if he has balloons and bunting as well. “I want to have what others have,” he tells her,

“But you can sort out the hen party – you can hold it on Thursday, when I’m having the stag party!”

| "I don't need to prove to anyone how happy I am!" |
Gwyneth is not enthusiastic about a hen party, as she says she does not have to prove to anyone how happy she is about getting married. “Well, I have a speech to write,” decides Siôn,

and as he takes reference books from the shelf, Gwyneth looks exasperated.

Sheryl enters Dr Gwyn Roberts’ consulting room, and tries to tell him that she is there on behalf of a client who is losing patches of hair; she first noticed the problem about a month ago.

| "Probably just an allergy" |
“It’s probably an allergy and will only be temporary,” she states, but looks unconvinced.

| "I shall need to examine the person" |
The doctor points out that the only way to be sure is to examine the person in question, which Sheryl seems to think is not possible.

| "Are we really talking about you here?" |
“Forgive me, but are we really talking about you here?” enquires Dr Gwyn. Sheryl exhibits a look of panic, and he encourages to be examined, as if it is a longterm problem, there is help available.

| Jim is becoming paranoid . . . |
Jim quizzes Eileen, “Are you sure there’s nothing in the papers, or magazines? You could have hidden it – you, Ed and Sioned were secretive – where is it? Up here somewhere?

That’s what you do – keep things from me as if I were a child!” This is more than enough for Eileen, and she storms out, back down to the shop.

finding the appointment letter from The Dderwen Clinic; he looks stunned.

| "You have alopecia" |
Dr Gwyn announces his diagnosis; “It’s alopecia, and I shall refer you to a specialist.” Sheryl had been hoping that it was something else, and fears that she will lose all her hair. She is told that the specialist will be able to give her more information.

| "Is it caused by stress?" |
“Is it caused by stress? Would something like yoga help?” Sheryl pleads,

| "Usually a failure of the immune system" |
but the doctor replies that it is often caused by a failure of the immune system,

| Sheryl is given some reading matter |
and gives her some information sheets which contain advice for sufferers and their partners.

| Siôn tries to give the impression he has no worries |
Ffion joins Siôn in the café, as it is half-term; Siôn stresses that he has never been happier, and Ffion is pleased that he has sorted out his doubts. “You said people often get cold feet –

| "I'm going to work at the relationship" |
“you have to work at a relationship, and I intend to do that,” he assures her. She points out that they also need love, and he is quick to emphasise that they are getting married.

| "I was going to marry Jinx, but I wasn't in love with him" |
“I was going to marry Jinx, but I wasn’t in love with him,” she replies, and he demands why she is doing this; he has already said he is happy and is working hard to ease his doubts. “If you have to work that hard, perhaps you should reconsider!” is Ffion’s conclusion.

He is quite adamant, “I don’t want to – I love Gwyneth, and we’re getting married – I don’t want to be on my own for the rest of my life!” Ffion intimates that Gwyneth may not be the right person.

| Jim shows Eileen that he has found the letter |
Jim, holding the letter, comes down to the shop, almost in tears, and tells Eileen that he is so sorry; “I thought you went somewhere on Friday, and had forgotten about me!”

Eileen embraces him.
As Sheryl reads the papers the doctor gave her, Ffion returns to see how the visit went;

“Alopecia? I’m so sorry!” Ffion sympathises, “But it’s better that you know, isnt it?”
Sheryl does not agree;

“It’s not better at all! Who is going to want a hairdresser with alopecia?”

| "You shouldn't have had to go on your own!" |
Jim regrets that Eileen had to go for her appointment on her own; “I didn’t – Sioned was with me,” she answers.

When he hears that Sioned found out about the problem from Colin, he becomes angry that Eileen told others but kept it from him.

“Why are you always determined to keep secrets from me?”

Then Sioned arrives, mentioning that there is no-one in the shop, and Jim roars, “You and Doctor Colin were aware that something was wrong with my wife!”

Sioned explains that her Mam had to tell someone; “You were in no state to hear the news! And Ed’s had cancer, so he has been a great help.”

Jim is even more furious, wondering who else knows, and pointing out that he would not have known if he had not found the letter.

| "Losing your temper won't help!" |
Ed comes in, wondering what all the fuss is about, and Sioned gives Jim a severe reprimand; “Mam’s had a terrible time, and you haven’t helped, as you’re so wrapped up in yourself! Losing your temper won’t help – how about supporting Mam?”
He replies that he would have been supportive if he had the chance.

Sheryl ponders, “After all the things I saw in Africa – and after Meilyr – here I am, worrying about my hair!”

She tells Ffion that Hywel does not know,

and that she has no intention of telling him, as they have already had so many problems.

Gwyneth arrives in the salon, and Ffion asks, “Looking forward to the big day? I saw Siôn earlier –

“he seemed agitated – probably nerves.” Gwyneth comments that they seem to be spending a lot of time together lately.

| "Come to the hen night on Thursday" |
She has come to invite Sheryl to her hen party on Thurday, but stresses that it will not be a wild night. “You have to do something silly – before turning into Mrs Gwyneth Respectable White!” says Sheryl.

“It shouldn’t be too long to wait for the results,” Eileen tells Jim, “Then I have to go back to the clinic. If it is cancer, they’ll tell me what the next step is – they say it’s easier to cope if you know what is facing you.”

Jim disagrees; “It’s not always good to know what’s ahead – you can’t prepare to lose someone! I’ve already had to say goodbye to Courtney – I don’t want to do that to you as well!”

Eileen hopes that he will not have to do that, but he gets up and runs from the room.

Siôn denies that he is getting cold feet, and in fact declares, “I don’t want to delay – I would marry you tomorrow if I could!

“I’ve written the speech now, and I’m looking forward to you hearing it!”

Ffion continues, “No, I mean keeping it from Hywel – he’ll understand and deserves to know the truth!”

“And what about me?” Sheryl demands, “Do I deserve this? Worrying that my partner is going to leave because I’m ugly and bald? We’ve been though hell these last few years – do we deserve this, on top of it all?”

Ffion warns that Hywel will find out eventually, but is told that it is up to Sheryl to decide when to tell him;

Later, after Eileen has left another message for Jim to come home, Ed returns to the shop flat, and informs Eileen and Sioned that he has failed to find Jim.

“I’ve looked everywhere – the Deri, the Bull, the cemetery. Could he be at Penrhewl?” Eileen has already phoned there.

Sioned reassures her that Jim would never do anything like that, as he loves her too much. “So where is he?” she demands.
