“You don’t understand,” laments Chester,
“Who are the cops going to believe – a respectable pupil with straight ‘A’s, or me, with a criminal record? I’m going back to prison – and there’s nothing you or I can do about it!”

| "I'm going back to prison!" |

![]() |
| "Do you know a Mark Jones?" |
![]() |
| "Everyone knows him" |
![]() |
| Ricky is questioned, but denies it all |
![]() |
| "We have reason to believe you bought some" |
![]() |
| "He doesn't know anything" |
![]() |
| "I've messed up at home!" |
![]() |
| "I panicked!" |

![]() |
| "Mark – did Ricky tell the truth?" |
![]() |
| Mark walks away |
He goes to the Deri for a drink,
and the bespectacled stranger accosts him; she gives a story about being a student from Swansea University who is researching people with the surname Jones.
She asks if he would fill in a questionnaire for her, beginning with his address. Mark is reluctant, as he is simply there for a quiet drink;
“Why don’t I take it and complete it in my own time?” he asks. She hands it over, and hurriedly leaves

![]() |
| "What hope do I have?" |
![]() |
| "I don't think the spark is still there" |
![]() |
| "She was attractive" |
![]() |
| "I've seen Ffion in some terrible states" |
![]() |
| "Yes, but she doesn't look different!" |
![]() |
| "Do you want to throw it all away?" |
![]() |
| "I want to talk to Ricky" |
![]() |
| Someone is watching them |
![]() |
| "What did you tell them?" |
![]() |
| "I didn't say anything" |
![]() |
| "Why didn't you tell them it's not Chester's fault?" |
Mark considers that she has now had her say, but she goes on,
“You have to do the right thing! Call the cops – mates stick up for each other! You’re happy for him to be locked up and that Tom to go free? Don’t you remember what happened to you?
“You could have died – and it could happen again!”
![]() |
| "Mates stick up for each other!" |
![]() |
| "You could have died!" |
![]() |
| "Why didn't you tell the truth, Ricky?" |
![]() |
| Ricky is about to phone the police |
![]() |
| "Stick to the story!" |
![]() |
| Now she has turned up on the doorstep |
![]() |
| "How do I get it back to you?" |
![]() |
| She walks away from Maes-y-Deri |
![]() |
| "I don't know what came over me" |
![]() |
| "Am I really that ugly?" |
![]() |
| "It was just the shock" |
“What – after my hair has been falling out for weeks?” she squeals, “If you think it’s hard, imagine what it’s like for me, looking in the mirror and not recognising that person!
“There’s worse to come – I might have to shave my head! What will you do then? I never thought you’d be so selfish – you have to ask yourself if you still want to be with me. If not, I’d rather know now.”

| "There's worse to come!" |
![]() |
| "This won't get any easier!" |
