| A depressing breakfast time |
Over breakfast, Diane recalls that Kath told her Linda had a wobble yesterday.
| "I should never have taken her to that restaurant" |
“I should never have taken her to that restaurant – it was too much for her.”
Dai receives a text from DJ, saying that Linda is able to come home, and they will be back by midday.
| "What shall we have for lunch?" |
Diane is greatly relieved; she must start thinking about making lunch and tells Dai to put the heating on.
| Dai is more interested in his breakfast |
He is keen to finish his breakfast first.
| Macs' belongings are on the way |
Gwyneth tells Macs that the delivery men phoned, and are bringing his stuff this morning. “We shall have to make room on these shelves – you don’t mind, do you, Siôn?” she asks,
| "Will it make any difference?" |
and he wearily enquires whether it will make any difference. He goes back upstairs, while Gwyneth hopes that Macs is not getting cold feet,
| "You were tossing and turning all night" |
as he was tossing and turning all night. He replies that he enjoys watching Siôn squirm.
| Gwyneth is confident of winning |
“I can’t stand seeing his pathetic face, as if he’s suffered a great injustice,” snarls Gwyneth, “It’s about time we twisted the knife!” Macs maintains that he does not look as if he is moving out,
| It looks as if Macs is less committed |
but she insists, “It doesn’t take much to mess with his head – like when he ran away to the Rhondda and gave everything away, so that he could renounce his sins.”
Macs says that he was afraid of going to prison, but that threat is not there now.
| "We must give him an emotional shock" |
Gwyneth gloats that he is afraid of his own shadow, and cannot handle changes of any kind. “If we can think of something to give him an emotional shock – we could say that something’s happened to someone in the family – Huw, maybe? He is the youngest son.
| "Smuggling drugs in Thailand!" |
“We can say that he’s been arrested – that he’s in a cell in Thailand for smuggling drugs!”
Macs looks concerned about this, and points out that it will be simple to prove that was not true; he would prefer to keep the family out of this, as they do not want other people poking their noses in.
Dai is looking out of the window and sees DJ and Linda approaching;
| Linda hobbles back to Bryntirion |
Linda is walking with a stick, and does not look too well.
| "I'll go and have a lie-down" |
She goes upstairs to lie down for a while.
| "Why does she need the stick?" |
Diane asks why she needs the stick and a DJ replies that she is going to lose her balance more often from now on,
| "The cancer has spread to her brain" |
as the cancer has spread to her brain. That is why she collapsed, and it is not looking good. Dai argues that she should be in hospital, getting the best possible care,
| "Nothing the hospital can do now" |
but Diane fears that there is nothing the hospital can do now.
DJ says the nurse is going to call on Wednesday; “They say we’ll be lucky to have her for another few months.”
| Macs is going to the village |
At Y Felin, Macs’ boxes of belongings have arrived; he is going down to the village and Gwyneth asks him to get a brown loaf.
| "What I want is both of you out of my life!" |
When asked if he wants anything, Siôn replies, “All I want is both of you out of my life!”
“Sell your share to Macs, and you’ll be free to go wherever you want,” she tells him, but Siôn is quite sure that that will never happen, so she may as well forget it.
| Gwyneth sets up a webmail account |
She sits at the bottom of the stairs, and it appears to be setting up an e-mail account on her phone, ‘z123@webmail.com’.
| "Black coffee to go, please" |
Macs enters the café and is greeted by Gwen; as he waits for his black coffee,
| Elgan introduces himself |
Elgan also comes in and introduces himself. “Things have changed a bit since you were last here. You’re back to stay, are you?” says Elgan,
| Macs does not like this nosy doctor |
“If so, don’t forget to register at the surgery, and come in so I can check you over.”
| Gwen gives him his coffee |
Macs takes his coffee and leaves, meeting Gaynor in the doorway;
| "Your new boyfriend is weird!" |
he warns her to stop her new boyfriend asking questions.
| "I asked if he was on the surgery's books" |
Elgan tells her that all he did was to ask Macs if he was on the surgery’s books, and if not, he was welcome to join.
| Sara comes in for cakes |
Sara comes in and asks Gwen for six cakes;
| "Ifan's check-up was fine" |
she also reports to the doctor that her appointment with the paediatrician cardiologist went well. She wants to register Ifan for the new community school,
| "It's a bit early for that" |
but Gaynor considers that it is rather early; “He’s only a few weeks old, and there’s no telling how things will be by the time he’s ready to start school. Maybe you’ll decide to send him to . . .”
| "You don't want him at your perfect school!" |
Once more, Sara takes offence; “You don’t want a child with Downs Syndrome in your perfect school? I don’t know how you’ve got on in this world,
| "You're a real bigot!" |
“because you’re a real bigot on the sly!” She takes her cakes and storms out.
| Siôn has a call about some translation work |
Siôn is going through paperwork when the house phone rings; he leaves the room to continue his conversation,
| It is surprising what changing one digit can do |
and Gwyneth takes the opportunity to alter one digit of the number on his mobile, headed Huw. Then she sends an e-mail from her mobile.
| "I'm not that hard-hearted, Siôn" |
When Siôn returns, she tells him she is glad that he is getting work, and that she is not that hardhearted. She insists that she only wants what she is entitled to.
| Siôn has a very disturbing e-mail |
Siôn looks at his laptop and exclaims, “It says here that Huw . . .
| "I can't believe it!" |
“I can’t believe it!”
| Gwyneth reads out what the e-mail says . . . |
Gwyneth looks at what he has been reading; “As his wife, I knew him well, and loved him very much. The authorities here in Rome are saying he fell off a bridge, but I think he jumped.
| . . . while Siôn is absolutely devastated |
“He regularly talked about how badly he’d been treated by you, his father, and it broke his heart.
| The message puts the blame on Siôn |
“He couldn’t understand why you didn’t love him as much as he loved you, and in the end it became too much to bear. I only hope now that he has found peace.”
| "Huw would never do that!" |
Siôn is in tears at learning this news, and Gwyneth expresses how sorry she is, but he insists, “Huw would never do that!” She points out that it is there in black and white, but he grabs his phone and dials the (newly amended) number.
| "You have dialled an incorrect number" |
He is dumbfounded when greeted with a message that he has dialled an incorrect number, and demands to know what is going on.
| DJ tells them that Linda is deteriorating . . . |
DJ tells Dai and Diane that his mother has been hiding the symptoms, and the doctors say she may not be able to climb the stairs for much longer.
| . . . while she is on the stairs, listening |
At that moment, Linda is halfway down the stairs, listening to them.
| "She could go tomorrow!" |
DJ continues, “I know that they said it could be months, but she could go tomorrow!”
| He helps her to sit on the sofa |
He sees his mother, and helps her to sit down.
| Sara goes on and on about Gaynor . . . |
Suddenly, Jason and Sara arrive, reporting that little Ifan has had his check-up and that everything is fine. Sara moans that Gaynor would not let them register Ifan at the new school, and angrily determines that she is going to sort this out,
| . . . although Jason tries to shut her up |
while Jason tries to dissuade her. Linda informs Sara that she will soon be back to work at Awyr Iach.
| "What's going on here?" |
When Macs returns, Siôn is sitting with his head in his hands; he demands what has happened, and Gwyneth relates that his father has had some bad news.
| "Huw is dead!" |
Siôn tells Macs, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but Huw is dead!” Gwyneth explains that Siôn has had an e-mail from Huw’s wife.
| "She's trying to blame me!" |
Siôn sobs, “And she’s trying to blame me, saying I’m a bad father! But Huw and I were starting to understand each other, weren’t we?”
| "He can't answer his phone if he's dead!" |
Gwyneth tells Macs that Huw is not answering his phone.
| "I'll contact the British Embassy!" |
Siôn intends to contact the British Embassy, as they will know what has happened. Macs looks accusingly at Gwyneth, and walks out.
| Diane does Linda's nails |
Diane thinks that Linda should stop working at Awyr Iach, as it is important for her to rest. “I shall be resting for ever before long – what I need to do now is live while I can,” she replies.
| Dai informs Jason about Linda's condition |
In the kitchen, Dai tells Jason that she only has a few months at most, so the bed will have to be brought down to the lounge.
| "I shall support her until the end!" |
He stresses that this is her home, and he has promised that he will look after DJ. He will support her to the end. Then Sara calls to Jason, and he remarks that she is like a dog with a bone.
| "Come on, Jason, we're going to see Gaynor!" |
She has been looking at a laptop, and announces, “We’re off now – we are going to see Gaynor. What’s more important than your son’s education?”
| "Sorry about Sara!" |
Jason apologises as he is dragged away.
| "Well, life must go on" |
Linda dismisses Sara’s insensitivity, commenting that life must go on.
| "I told you I didn't want the family involved!" |
Macs is angry with Gwyneth, as he did not want the family involved with this, but she merely tells him to stop grumbling.
| "This is too cruel!" |
“You’ve gone too far – this is too cruel!” he says.
She responds, “That is why we are doing it!” and assumes that he is getting cold feet. As they hear Siôn coming in, Macs insists he will tell him the truth.
| "If you tell the truth, we'll never get Y Felin!" |
“Have you forgotten why we’re doing this?” she demands, “If you tell the truth, we’ll never get Y Felin! It will be over, and he will have won.”
| Siôn has drawn a complete blank |
Siôn tells them that he could get no information, and it was as if they did not know what he was talking about.
| "It might not be true, Dad" |
Macs suggests it might not be true, but Gwyneth maintains that the embassy will not give out information over the phone.
| Siôn is at the end of his tether |
Siôn is inconsolable, and Macs feel very guilty.
| "She is dying, Sara!" |
As they walk down the street, Jason reprimands Sara, “You could have shown a bit more interest, considering that she’s dying.”
| Then Sara spots Gaynor and Elgan . . . |
Then Sara sees Gaynor and Elgan emerging from the café, and rushes across.
| . . . and starts haranguing Gaynor |
“We’ve got every right to register Ifan in that school! You said we should send him to . . .”
Gaynor angrily insists that she said no such thing, calling upon Elgan for confirmation. Sara will not be stopped;
| "You haven't heard the last of this!" |
“It’s illegal to refuse a child with DS a place at any school! I could report you, especially after what you said last week about how normal he looks! Ifan wouldn’t be safe at your school anyway! You haven’t heard the last of this!” and she stalks away.
| "When it comes to Ifan, Sara is like a lioness!" |
Again, Jason is left to apologise; “When it comes to Ifan, Sara is like a lioness – I’ll have a word with her.”
| "Thanks for not backing me up!" |
Gaynor is angry with Elgan for not backing her up,
| "I don't want to offend my patients" |
but he says he is reluctant to offend his patients.
| Linda is using the laptop |
DJ asks his mother if she wants something to eat; she is using the laptop and says she will have a snack later.
| "Can I get you anything from the village?" |
He is going to the village, and asks if she wants anything.
| Linda is buying medication online |
On the laptop screen is ‘The Medication Forum” and Linda is ordering some tablets, costing £50; she completes the order.
| "I've been a bad father!" |
Siôn, still very tearful, admits that he has let his three sons down; “Since your mother died, I've been a bad father.
| "Iolo has to be told!" |
“We have to tell Iolo – he has to be told, Macs!”
| "We don't know for sure" |
Macs replies that there is no point in upsetting Iolo when they do not know for sure. “No-one will tell us anything!” agonises Siôn,
| "I'll never forgive myself!" |
“If he has committed suicide, I’ll never forgive myself!”
| "All going according to plan!" |
Turning to look at the gloating Gwyneth, Macs vows that he will sort this out. When Siôn has gone upstairs,
| "You're almost as good a liar as I am!" |
she praises Macs, “You’re almost as good a liar as I am!” He demands that she never do that to him again, but in her wheedling voice, she insists, “I did it for you – you want revenge as much as I do!”
| "We're supposed to be doing this together!" |
He points out that they are supposed to be partners and doing this together, not going behind each others backs. “But it’s working, Macs – he’s already falling apart!” she gleefully announces,
| Y Felin is almost within her grasp |
and smiles as he walks out.
