14 August 2017

Iolo is not used to handling babies
Iolo carefully picks up the baby, wondering who could have done this;  Tyler rushes out of the back gate and looks around.
The baby appears to be unhappy
The baby is by now crying, and Iolo attempts to calm it.
Dani is in a daze after what she witnessed
Dani walks up the street in a daze;

Britt asks if she has seen Garry as he is not in the garage.
"Have you seen a stranger in the village?"
Tyler comes running up and asks Britt if she has seen a stranger in the village,
"What?   A baby?"
as they have left a baby on the doorstep.
Eileen and Colin are told the news
In the back street, by Gwynfor’s workshop, Colin is unloading the car when Britt tells him and Eileen about the baby.   “You’d be surprised – the papers are full of these stories!” Colin exclaims,
"I'd better go and help"
and Britt intends to see if she can help.   He advises her not to interfere, but she protests that Iolo and Tyler do not know how to look after a baby.
"I think you should check on Catrin"
Colin adds, “I think you should check on Catrin – she wasn’t in a good mood earlier.”   It appears that she has locked herself in her bedroom and will not come out.   “Welcome to the teenage years,” he remarks.
Dani sits alone in the Deri . . .
In the Deri, Dani is looking sadly at
. . . looking at her 'Baby App'
the ‘Baby App’ on her phone;  she tells Dan that she must have forgotten to order more tonic.
Sioned and Garry arrive back from the hospital
Meanwhile, in the back street, Garry has brought Sioned back to the village;
"Are you coming with me?"
she asks if he is getting out of the car, and he assures her that he will be with her shortly.
Sioned gets out of the car
She alights very hesitantly.
The baby seems inconsolable
Iolo is still trying to console the baby when Tyler returns,
"Whoever it was has gone"
advising that whoever it was has gone.   Iolo is very concerned as the baby is still crying, and will not take a bottle;
Not the time for another of their arguments
they argue about what to do.
Sioned wakes to find . . .
Sioned is lying on the sofa when Garry appears;  she is suffering from cramps, which the nurse told her could last for some time.
. . . Garry is in the flat
He advises that she should rest, and offers to fetch her mother, as he is sure that she will understand.   Sioned is insistent she does not want her mother here.
"You should have a check-up just in case"
“The nurse said that losing a baby after 15 weeks was very unusual – maybe you should have a check-up just in case,” he suggests, “It’s important that you look after yourself.”
"Do you think I haven't been looking after myself?"
“Do you think I haven’t been looking after myself, and that’s why I lost the baby?” she demands.
He only wants to be sure she is all right
Garry answers that he just wants her to look after herself.
"She probably has a boyfriend"
In the shop, Colin tells Eileen that Catrin is going through a phase at the moment, and Eileen suspects that she may have a boyfriend, pointing out that parents are always the last ones to find out.
"Nobody had a  clue about Courtney and Ricky"
“Look at Courtney and Ricky – nobody had a clue about them.”   Then she adds, “Jim is renting an allotment –
"Perhaps you could do with a new hobby"
“perhaps you would benefit from new hobby, and something that would appeal to Catrin too.”
"See if you get inspiration from this lot"
She hands him a bundle of magazines, predicting that he might find some ideas in them.
Looking at the first, he reads, “Horse and Hounds!”
Colin's less than successful animal impression
and gives his impression of the whinnying of a horse, which makes Eileen smile.
"Have you heard the palaver about the baby?"
Britt arrives at the Deri, where Dani is very preoccupied;  “Have you heard about the palaver about the baby?” she enquires,
The glass slips through Dani's fingers
and Dani is so shocked that she drops the glass she is holding.
Dani thinks the secret is out
As she clears up the mess, Dani asks where Britt heard about this and she is further concerned when Britt informs her that she was told by Tyler, who is going around the village telling everyone.
"Tyler has to tell the police"
“He has to find whoever did it, so he can tell the police,” she continues.
Dani is by this time panic-stricken,
Then Dani discovers that it is the 'baby on the doorstep'
but relief comes as Britt adds, “They need to find out who left a baby on their doorstep.”
Dani is now very confused as Britt goes on, “It’s a real shock – I just hope they’re coping.   I thought of going there, but I don’t want to interfere.”
"They would be glad of the help"
Dani is sure that they would be glad of the help, and Britt decides to go over there right now.
"The police ought to be here by now"
Iolo is panicking, demanding where the police are;
Britt is immediately worried
when Britt arrives, she is immediately concerned about the baby’s high temperature.
"You need an ambulance – and fast!"
“You don’t need the police – you need an ambulance – and fast!” she instructs them.
Garry has made some soup for Sioned
Garry brings in a bowl of soup for Sioned;  she wakes up and is surprised to see him still there.
"For a moment I had forgotten about everything"
“For a moment, I had forgotten about everything,” she admits, and he assures her that she will get through this.
"I really must go now"
Then he decides that he should go;
Sioned gazes longingly at him
as she looks up expectantly at him, he turns and leaves the flat.
Iolo is frustrated at the lack of information
In the hospital, Iolo demands to know what the situation is, but the nurse will only tell them that they are trying to stabilise the baby.
"I can't tell you any more"
The child is in a serious condition, but she cannot say any more as they are not related.   Iolo loses his temper.
Garry breaks the news to Eileen
Eileen appreciates Garry going to see her and notifying her of what has happened.
"Why didn't they keep her in the hospital?"
She is surprised that they did not keep Sioned in the hospital, but he says that she was insistent on going home.   “I looked after her for a while, but she needs more care than I can give her,” he says;
Jim's redecorating is obviously continuing
Eileen will do everything she can to help, and breaks down in tears.
Iolo cannot keep away from the baby . . .
Watching through the window, Iolo sees the nurse leave the bedside and slips in
. . . and stands by the cot
to hold the hand of the baby, who is crying piteously.
Sioned has another visitor . . .
Sioned is suddenly aware of someone’s arrival;
. . . who does not receive a warm welcome
she is not happy to see that it is her mother.   When Eileen asks how she is,
As usual, Sioned blames her mother for everything
Sioned replies, “I felt the worst pain ever!   Just after you left – just after we argued.   You upset me!   You told Dani that Garry was the father – if it wasn’t for you, my baby would still be here!”
Eileen protests that she is being too harsh
Eileen reassures her that she is sorry for what happened, but Sioned snarls, “Now there is no baby, you can forget about his mess!”   Her mother insists that she would have supported her and the baby.
"I hate you!"
“You would not have been allowed to come anywhere near the baby – I hate you!” Sioned growls.
"How will this help Catrin?"
In the Deri, Britt cannot see how a new camera, which Colin is looking at on the laptop, is going to help Catrin,
"It's digital, you see"
but he replies, “It’s digital, you see – SLRD – D for digital.   All the reviews give it five stars!”   Britt points out that it also carries a five star price, but he insists,
"An investment for the family"
“It will not be simply a camera for the children, it will be an investment for the family.   If it helps to get Catrin out of her room and now and again, that’s a bonus!”
Dani asks Dan the barman to get a box of red wine from the cellar;
"You weren't answering your phone"
Garry comes in and is worried about Dani, as she was not answering her phone.
"I was busy"
Her answer is that she was busy, and she informs him that she is fine.
Britt relates to Garry the tale of the baby on the doorstep,
"I don't want to hear any more about babies, OK?"
but Dani snaps, “I don’t want to hear any more about babies, OK?”   When Britt points out that things like that do not happen in Cwmderi,
"Terrible things happen here"
Dani replies, “Oh Britt, terrible things happen here.   I’m tired – I’m going upstairs.”
"What's the matter with her?"
Both Garry and Britt look worried.
The nurse invokes patient confidentiality
Iolo is still very disgruntled that he is not being told about the baby’s condition;  the nurse explains again, “I can’t tell you – it’s against patient confidentiality policy.”
Iolo and Tyler have another of their disagreements . . .
Tyler reminds him that they have no right to know.
. . . with Iolo evidently becoming quite vociferous
“She’s fighting for her life, and you don’t care at all!” Iolo rages;  the nurse warns that she will have to call security to escort them from the premises.   Iolo says he will leave, but asks whether there is hope or not.
"The little girl was addicted when she was born"
After seeking the doctor’s nodded approval, the nurse explains, “The mother was an addict during her pregnancy, which means the little girl was addicted when she was born.
The situation is very grave
“The baby is suffering from heroin withdrawal symptoms, and the next few hours are critical.”
"Britt was 'doing my head in'!"
When Garry comes upstairs, Dani says that Britt was ‘doing her head in’ and again insists that she is feeling fine.
Garry proposes lessening her workload
“I think you’re doing too much, with the Deri, taxis and the salon,” Garry maintains, “Maybe you should do fewer shifts behind the bar – it’s important that you look after yourself, for your sake, and the baby’s sake.   You mean everything to me.”
She recoils from his touch
Dani objects to him touching her, giving the excuse that he stinks of brake fluid, and tells him to go and have a shower.
"I was worried about you, Sioned"
“When I said you would get hurt in the end, I was not being nasty,” Eileen tells Sioned, “I was worried you would get hurt, that you would do something you would regret.   I never wanted you to lose the baby – I could tell you were looking forward so much to being a mother.
Eileen imagines life with the child
“I imagined you both, going for a walk in the park, imagined me playing shop with him or her, or preparing Welsh cakes with him or her in the afternoon, while you were having a break.”
"Things can go back to the way they were"
“Well, you won’t have to babysit for me now,” murmurs Sioned, “Things can go back to the way they were.”   Eileen points out that she must realise that things will never be the same again.
"I've never seen so much blood"
“I was bleeding, Mam, I’ve never seen so much blood,” Sioned continues, “There I was, in a busy and noisy hospital, and all I could hear was silence.   The nurse was there, trying to find a heartbeat, but there was just silence.”
"When you find the right person"
Her mother tries to reassure her that she will have a baby one day, and that this was just not the right time;  “Perhaps it will happen when you find the right person.”
"At least, I've got Garry!"
Sioned just feels so empty and so lonely, but stresses, “At least, I’ve got Garry!”
"Don't get your hopes up"
Eileen advises her not to get her hopes up,
Sioned regrets her earlier accusations
then Sioned confesses that she did not mean what she said earlier, and is sorry.
