23 January 2017

"I want to check on Ed!"
In the wake of the attack, Kelly wants to go and check on Ed, but Sioned bars her way;
"He said he'd teach me a lesson"
“Thank goodness you are here!” she says, “I had no choice – he came back angry and said he’d teach me a lesson, once and for all – I was scared!”
"There's no telling what he'll do!"
Again Kelly demands to see Ed, but Sioned insists, “Not now – he’ll be furious, and there’s no telling what he’ll do!   Leave him alone – trust me.”   Kelly points out that Ed was screaming.
"He pushed me into it!"
Sioned goes on, “I’ve never been so scared – look, I’m still shaking!   He pushed me into it – you know what he’s been like.   I’ll go and make a cup of tea – talking to you always makes me feel better.”   She makes sure to close the door behind her, as Kelly stands, disbelieving.
"I'm making brunch"
At Bryntirion, DJ announces he is making brunch;  “People who get up before ten call it breakfast!” Dai grumbles, as he is working his way through Diane’s address book,
"I haven't got time to eat"
“I haven’t got time to eat – there’s a long list here to phone – someone must know something about Diane!”
DJ suggests that the reason she left her phone behind is that she needs some peace.   “So do I, but that’s not how marriages work,” Dai tells him.
Ed is at the end of his tether . . .
Ed paces up and down in the bedroom,
. . . and does not know what to do
frantic with worry, as Sioned brings tea for Kelly;
"I thought he was going to kill me!"
“He’s come home angry before, but there was something in his eyes today – I really thought he was going to kill me!”
"He was about to hit me!"
She turns on the waterworks as she continues, “He was shouting at me and calling me a slapper, not good enough for him.   He was about to hit me, and something snapped!   It took all my strength to stand up for myself and do exactly what he deserved.”
Kelly is sceptical about this tale
All this time, Kelly has been listening silently, as Sioned goes on, “That is thanks to you – I did what you’ve been telling me to do!   I know how it looked, but have you any idea how often I’ve been in that situation?   What I did was terrible, but it’s high time he suffered the pain that I have!”
"This might be a new start for us"
Kelly is amazed when she says, “This might be a new start for us – now he knows he can’t hurt me – I can stand up for myself, and I’m stronger than he thought.”   She deters Kelly from seeing Ed, maintaining that she saw him when she made the tea, and there is not a mark on him.   “The coffee was not even hot!   I know you’re worried about me, and I really appreciate that, but this is the last chance for Ed and I to be happy!”
It does seem to be getting to Kelly . . .
By this time, Kelly has tears in her eyes,
. . . who is quickly hustled away
and allows herself to be shepherded out of the flat, much to Sioned’s relief.
"Should have gone to counselling ages ago"
Jim returns to the shop flat and tells Eileen that he should have gone to counselling ages ago;  “Things won’t change overnight, but I’m trying.”
"Who are these half-naked men?"
As Eileen makes tea, he looks at a DVD box and asks, “Who are these half-naked men?”   Eileen explains that she watched it with Courtney,
"Set in the world of male strip clubs!"
and Jim reads, “A comedy drama set in the world of male strip clubs!”
"If Courtney liked it, I'll watch it!"
When told that Courtney liked it, he is determined to watch it too.
"Dani, why were the Christmas profits down?"
Garry disturbs Dani when she is washing her hair to ask why the Deri’s profits were down over Christmas. “I’m guessing because I had to run the place on my own!” is the reply.
"You had plenty of time to waste on the panto!"
He points out that she had plenty of time to waste on the panto, and stresses that the Deri comes first.
"It's thanks to the panto that we have any profits!"
“It’s thanks to the panto that we have any profits!” she growls, but is prevented from drying her hair by Garry’s insistence that he wants to ‘brainstorm’ now – and that a cup of tea would help.   “So go and make one!” she snaps.
"They're not going to strip again?"
Jim remarks, “They’re not going to strip again?   I think you’re enjoying this film a bit too much!
"I had bigger muscles than most of them!"
“I looked like that when I was their age, but I had bigger muscles than most of them!”   Eileen is pleased to see him smiling again, and would like to accompany him to one of his counselling sessions.
Jim does not want to talk about Courtney
“I’m happy to do what Courtney liked to do, but I don’t want to talk about her or what happened, not with you, not yet,” he says.   Eileen confirms that she will be ready when he is.   Then Jim decides he is going for a walk,
Eileen is still worried about Jim
and tells her to watch the rest of the film.
"Dai is going through Diane's address book"
DJ picks up the post at APD, and tells Jason when he comes in that Dai is calling every number in Diane’s address book.
"What if she never comes back?"
“This is all my fault – I really messed up!” whines Jason, “What if she never comes back?”
DJ says that they are all guilty of adding to her stress levels.
"Look – postcard from Diane!"
Then he finds a postcard from Diane;  he reads, “I’m all right, but I need peace and quiet.   Look after each other,” adding, “She’ll be back when she tires of peace and quiet.”
"I'd better go and tell Dai"
Jason is eager to go and tell Dai.
"You can come out now, Ed"
Sioned calls to Ed that he can come out now, as the coast is clear;  “It took a while, but I think I convinced her that nothing’s wrong here,” she boasts.
"Did you tell her the truth?"
Ed enquires whether Sioned told the truth,
"Which version of the truth would that be?"
to which she replies, “Which version of the truth would that be?   That you’re a murderer – that you attacked Gwyneth – that I’m doing all I can to keep you out of prison?
"I told her you were about to hit me"
“You’re lucky that I saved your bacon – I told her you were about to hit me, and what I did was in self-defence.   We don’t want people to suspect you, do we?   You are all right, aren’t you?   Not in any pain?”
Ed is back to square one again
Ed grunts, and slouches back towards the bedroom.
"I hope Glenys is still sober!"
DJ and Jason reach Bryntirion as Dai intends to go and see Glenys Pop;  “I hope she’ll be sober, as it’s before midday!” he comments.
"She didn't even send it to the house"
He is not happy to see Jason, but is given the postcard.   “She didn’t even send it to the house,” Dai moans,
"She just wants peace and quiet"
and DJ supposes that she simply wants peace and quite.   Dai points at Jason and says, “Away from you I suppose!”
"I'm suffering too, Dai!"
Jason is adamant that he is suffering too, with his separation from Sara, but there is no sympathy from Dai;
"What do you want – a cwtch?"
“Ah, diddums!   What do you want – a cwtch?”
"She wants peace from this bickering!"
“Peace from this bickering is what she wanted – and I don’t blame her!” shouts DJ, “She’s in Rosslare and safe – she’ll come back when she’s ready.   For once, can’t you listen and do as she wants?   You can start by having lunch round the table.”
Ed examines his latest injuries
Ed is looking at the marks and blister on his chest as Kelly appears in the doorway;
"I knew she was lying!"
“She said there was not a mark on you – I knew she was lying!”
"You can't barge in like that!"
Ed is panic-stricken, but Kelly assures him that she heard Sioned tell Gwen she was going to town.
"I should have believed you!"
“I’m so sorry – I should have believed you – you don’t have to be afraid – you’re safe!”
At last – someone who believes him
She hugs him.
We need to do something for St Dwynwen's
Garry wants to organise something for St Dwynwen’s night on Wednesday, but Dani has decided on Valentine’s day.   “But that’s a month away – we need a busy night now!” Garry insists.
"I've coped without you for ages!"
“Look – I’ll do it myself!   I’ve coped without you for ages – why change anything now?” she snarls,
She collapses on the sofa . . .
and goes over to
. . . near where Jim is sitting
where Jim is sitting alone in the corner.
"People fear silence, don't they?"
“People fear silence when someone is grieving, don’t they?” she asks Jim, “They always feel they have to say something, but sometimes it helps just having someone sitting there.”
"At last – someone who understands"
Jim is grateful that at last there is someone who understands, and wonders when all this will get easier.   “Not for a long time,” Dani replies.
"It's as if Courtney never existed"
“People carry on with their lives as if Courtney never existed,” he laments;  Dani advises that he has to be selfish and do the things which make him feel better and closer to her.   He admits, “There is somewhere I like to go when it all gets too much.”
"How about steak for your dinner, Jim?"
At that moment, Eileen appears, having been searching for him, and asks if he would like steak for his dinner.   “Lovely!” he answers.
Kelly is packing Ed's bag
Kelly is in the process of packing a bag for Ed,
"No, I can't leave Sioned!"
but he protests that he cannot go and leave Sioned;  she tells him, “You don’t have to live in fear – we’re going to the police, as I saw everything.   There is a way out, Ed!”
"Sioned doesn't mean it"
“I don’t want a way out – I’m happy here,” he assures her, “Sioned doesn’t mean it – it’s been a stressful time for her.   I haven’t been a good husband.   She deserves more support, and I’m going to give it.   Now I want you to leave!”
"I'm not letting this go, Ed!"
As she does so, Kelly emphasises, “I’m telling you now – I’m not letting this go!”
Dai does not like poached eggs
As they sit at the meal table in Bryntirion, Dai complains, “I’m not a fan of poached eggs – “I like them fried in bacon fat, that’s how Diane does it.”
"I'm going to look for her!"
Jason says, “Mam should be here – I’m going to look for her.   Is Rosslare a safe place for a woman alone?   I can’t just sit here and do nothing!”
"She went to get away from you!"
“I should go – she went to get away from you!” rages Dai, but Jason reminds him that she sent the card to APD, so she is in no hurry for him to find her.
"Blood is thicker than water – she needs her son!"
Furthermore, as blood is thicker than water, her son should go.   “And who was with her all those years when you were ‘Waltzing Matilda’ down under, then?” demands Dai.
"You're like a couple of kids!"
DJ describes them as a pair of children, and predicts that Diane will not be happy to see either of them.
Sioned is back . . .
Sioned is back from town in a somewhat more subdued mood;
. . . and applies a spray to his wounds
she has bought an antiseptic spray which she applies to Ed’s chest.
"You know I wouldn't hurt you"
“You know I wouldn’t hurt you, don’t you?” she simpers,
"It all gets too much for me sometimes"
“It all gets too much for me sometimes, trying my best to keep you out of prison, and I get stressed.   You understand, don’t you?”
"It's my fault, Sioned"
Ed nods, and admits that it is his fault;  “You do push me too far sometimes, but everything I do is for your own sake,” she goes on,
His attempt at a smile . . .
“I don’t want to lose you – I’ll always look after you.”
. . . rapidly dissipates
She goes to make tea, and Ed’s forced smile disappears, to be replaced by his usual dejected expression.
