| "I'm sorry about last night" |
Anita comes out of the shop, and Elgan apologises to her about last night; he had something on his mind, not that it is any excuse. “If you have time, I’d like to explain,” he tells her.
| "I thought you only discussed things in the surgery" |
“I thought you were only willing to discuss things in the surgery,” she replies, sarcastically, but nevertheless agrees that he can come back to the house.
| Gaynor is watching |
From a little way up the street, Gaynor is watching them.
| "It's Ffion – remember me?" |
Ffion is trying, yet again, to ring Gethin; she leaves a message, “It’s me, Ffion – remember me? I want to know when you’re coming back – if you’re planning on coming back.
| She wonders if she will get any reply |
“Arwen’s been asking after you.”
| "I feel so ashamed" |
At number 10, the doctor begins, “I feel so ashamed of the way I treated you,”
| "I was only trying to say thank you" |
and Anita replies that she was only trying to say thank you. “I let my personal feelings come between us,” he admits, “My head’s all over the place – I was foolish to think that Gaynor would call to see me.
| "We've had to split up" |
“We’ve had to split up, and I’m not coping very well.”
Anita enquires if is what he really wants, and he reveals that he is leaving, having been offered a job in Edinburgh. “I haven’t told everyone at the surgery,
| Elgan asks Anita to keep it quiet (No chance!) |
“so I’d appreciate if you didn’t tell anyone.” She readily agrees to this, and Elgan suspects that he is making a mistake.
“Well, I don’t know what you expect me to do about that,” comments Anita, but he points out that is why he was angry with her last night, and is sorry.
| "You'd better sort your head out!" |
She advises, “You had better sort out your head, one way or the other.”
| Gaynor is not happy with the situation |
Meanwhile, Gaynor sits in the café, miserably staring into space, as Debbie comments that she looks of miles away. Hywel says that she has had a hard term at school, and Debbie remarks that opening the new school will not make things any easier.
| "We've decided to split up" |
Hywel goes over to sit with Gaynor; she admits that she is not OK, as she and Elgan have decided to split up. Changing the subject, she tells him, “I hear that Wil is coming back to Cwmderi,”
| "He's only coming for a visit" |
and when Hywel replies that it is only a temporary visit, she adds, “I was under the impression he was coming back permanently.
| "Sheryl's been enquiring about a school place" |
“Sheryl has made enquiries about Wil attending the community school.” Hywel looks at her blankly.
| Ffion diverts down the alley |
In the street, Ffion sees Macs approaching, and tries to avoid him by walking into the alley. He admits that he was wrong to talk to Arwen like that;
| Macs has a letter for Arwen |
“I know I’ll never see her again, so I have written this. It’s a letter to Arwen – to open when she’s 18.” Ffion refuses to accept it and tells him to leave them alone.
| Josh and Vicky look at old photos |
Josh and Vicky are looking through old photos, particularly of Debbie;
| This was Debbie in Spain |
Josh asks which beach these was taken on, and is told that it was in Spain.
| "Then she turned up here with a car full of children" |
Kath remembers that it was a holiday romance; “And then Debbie turned up here, with a car full of children!”
| "That's not right – she didn't have a car!" |
Mark queries this account, stressing that she did not have a car.
| "I feel ashamed" |
At this point, Debbie walks in and assumes they are laughing at her, but Josh tells her she was a pretty girl; “It’s amazing how little I know about my own daughter – I feel ashamed,” he muses.
| "Why don't we have a quiz about Debbie?" |
Mark suggests that they have a quiz about Debbie, which Kath thinks is a good idea;
| "Only if we have one about him too!" |
Debbie agrees to this, providing they also have one about her father. Kath appoints herself as quizmaster, she loved doing that when they had quizzes in the Deri.
| Hywel relaxes with the Western Post |
Hywel is reading the Western Post when Sheryl comes in with the washing; “Listen, I spoke to Gaynor earlier – she says you’ve been discussing Wil.”
| "That was only just in case" |
She argues that it was just in case, and he continues, “In case he stays here?”
| "I want to see whether he wants to live in Wales" |
Sheryl is adamant that she wants to talk about it with Wil, and see whether he wants to live in Wales; she was planning to tell Hywel.
| "You always tell me when it's too late!" |
He assumes, “When it is too late! You always tell me when it’s too late – your hair, Esther – I’m always the last to know!”
| "Well, I'm telling you now!" |
“Well, I’m telling you now!” she snarls, then asks what he thinks of the idea. She explains that she would like to see him growing up, and as a teenager, but that it will be up to him, describing it as, “Not a big deal.
| "I shall regret it for the rest of my life" |
“I just know that if I don’t ask him, I shall regret it for the rest of my life.”
| "You dislike living in a house?" |
Josh has been writing down his answers to the quiz questions; Kath queries his dislike of living in a house, and he admits that although he has received a warm welcome,
| "I belong in a caravan" |
he belongs in a caravan, travelling, as it is in his blood. He has only stayed because of Debbie.
| "Here are my answers" |
Then Debbie appears, handing over her answers to the questions. Mark has made mugs of tea, and calls Vicky for the start of the quiz.
| Ffion has an unwelcome visitor |
Macs is outside the door of Cysgod y Glyn, and sounds the buzzer; when Ffion answers, he wants to read out the letter to her, but she tells him to go away.
| "I've been looking forward to this day for years" |
Undeterred, he begins, “I have been looking forward to this day for years, Arwen. I’m sure you’ve grown up into a beautiful young woman.”
He is again told that is enough, and to go away,
| "I want you to know how much pain and anguish that has caused me" |
but he continues, “Although I respect and understand your mother’s wish to keep a distance between us, I want you to know how much pain and anguish that has caused me.”
| "Oh, please stop!" |
Ffion is now actually listening to what he says, and wishes he would stop, but he does not. “But from today onwards, I hope we can look forward to the future.
| "Your mother has been a wonderful mother" |
“I don’t bear a grudge against your mother, who has been a wonderful mother, sometimes in difficult circumstances.”
| This is starting to get to Ffion |
Tears well up in Ffion’s eyes as she listens to his words, “I really hope I can be a part of your life. I made a lot of mistakes in my life, but one thing is for sure –
| His voice trembles with emotion . . . |
“having you as my daughter has been the best thing that ever happened to me.” Then he asks if she has heard this,
| . . . and Ffion cannot hold back the tears |
but Ffion, in tears, makes no reply.
| The answers are revealed |
At the end of the quiz, Kath reveals the answers, “Debbie’s favourite food is curry, and Josh’s is cawl.” Debbie decides she will make that for dinner tomorrow.
| "Urgh – snails!" |
“Debbie dislikes snails,” and Josh realises that there will be no garlic snails served at the café.
| Snakes are what Josh does not like |
Then Josh announces that what he dislikes are snakes, and Debbie remembers the one kept by Sam, Colin’s father.
| "I could have sworn it was 'living in a house'!" |
Vicky was quite confident of her answer, which was, “Living in a house,” but Josh protests that he loves it here.
| "You can see Arwen" |
Ffion goes to Y Felin and tells Macs that he can see Arwen, but it has not been an easy decision.
| "One more chance" |
“I’m willing to give you one more chance – but not as a father – as a friend!”
| "Yes – whatever you say" |
Macs is overjoyed and will agree to anything. “There are conditions,” she goes on, “I’ll be there every time you see her.”
| "When can I see her?" |
He is now excited and wonders when he can see her. Ffion replies, “I’m on my way to pick her up from Elinor’s house now –
| "You can't stay long" |
“you could come over. You can’t stay long as it will be her bedtime.”
| "I could make up a story" |
He says that this will be great, and that he could read her story – or make one up. She tells him to come over in half an hour.
| "All right – what's your honest opinion?" |
Hywel sits moodily, and Sheryl asks for his honest opinion, although he says she will not want to hear it.
| "It's unfair on the boy" |
“Asking Wil to come and live here is unfair on the boy. You’re forcing him to choose between his mother and father – and how will this affect Darren’s family?”
| "I shall only be asking a question" |
She replies that he is being overdramatic – she will only be asking a question, and thinks that her son will say yes, but has every right to say no if that is what he wants – and she will accept that.
| "Is this the right time?" |
Then he asks if this is the right time to do this; “After everything we’ve been through – with the adoption, and the alopecia.”
| "You were right – I don't want to hear what you've got to say!" |
She angrily tells him that he was right – she does not want to hear what he has to say.
| Macs arrives, rather apprehensively |
Macs arrives at Cysgod y Glyn and greets Arwen, who waves at him.
| "Macs would like to read you a story" |
Ffion tells her to go and put on her pyjamas, and then she can come back and sit on the sofa. “Macs would like to read you a story – and if you’re lucky he might make one up.”
| Macs is all smiles |
Arwen goes to her room, and Macs is very grateful to Ffion.
| The scores are announced |
The quiz scores have been calculated, and Mark scored seven for the questions about Debbie, but Vicky got eight. Debbie is disappointed that she only got one question right about Josh.
| "The scores do matter – I won!" |
Kath insists that scores do not matter as long as they enjoyed themselves, and get to know each other.
| "I'm thinking of going to the Royal Welsh Show" |
Apparently, Josh’s favourite animal is the Shire horse, and he says that he is thinking about going to the Show at Llanelwedd.
| Debbie will accompany him and Mark |
Mark has not been there for years, and would like to accompany him; Debbie agrees to go along, too.
| "I organised everything" |
Elgan admits that he can be rather too organised at times, adding, “I organised my career, organised moving away . . .”
| "But that's not what you want, is it?" |
Gaynor realises that is not what he wants, but replies that he does not know,
| "I should just let things happen" |
and thinks he should stop worrying about things so much, but rather let them happen in their own time – naturally.
| "That can be dangerous" |
Gaynor points out that such an approach can be very dangerous,
| They appear to be reconciled |
but he leans forward and kisses her.
| "Which chicken laid the nuclear egg?" |
Macs ends his bedtime story, “The sergeant had to quickly decide which chicken had laid the nuclear egg. The blue chicken, the red chicken, or the white one.”
| "The white one!" |
Arwen is quick to answer, “The white one!” which is in fact the correct answer.
| Ffion is pleased how well things are going |
Ffion thinks that he can tell good stories, and after Arwen has said, “Thank you,” to Macs, she goes to clean her teeth.
| "I don't know about this nuclear egg!" |
Ffion expresses reservations about this nuclear egg, and hopes that Arwen will not have nightmares, but is only pulling his leg. She considers that it went well, and may well be the way forward, especially at this early stage.
| "Whatever you think is best" |
Macs is very happy with whatever she thinks best.
| "Nos da!" (Goodnight) |
Arwen appears in the doorway to wish them, “Goodnight!” leaving Macs smiling broadly.
