Mathew pushes Hannah away, and she thinks he regards her as ugly. He explains that he has a girlfriend,

She admits that she did not want to finish with Chester, and wails, “What’s he going to say? No way will he want to be with me now,” but Mathew promises not to say a word to anyone.

In the cemetery, Jim explains, “Dad might have to go away for a while –

“Uncle Adrian has got himself into a mess, again! Some things never change – act in haste, regret later. He was the same when we were kids – he scratched Dad’s car with the handlebars of his bike, and I took the blame then, too.

“But that’s what families are for – they look after one another.
“I had the honour and pleasure of being your father for seventeen years, and I loved every minute. I’m not going to let that opportunity be taken away from Adrian.

| Eileen's detective work continues . . . |
Checking that Adrian is not around, Eileen goes into his bedroom and unzips his bag;

she is astounded to find jewellery, then replaces it and closes the bag.
Chester is pacing up and down outside the Deri,

and in his frustration, kicks one of the chairs.

| He looks at the moped, then kicks it |
He looks up at the flat window, then notices Mathew’s moped; he delivers a hefty kick, which knocks off the numberplate.

Mathew, who has just come out of the Deri, is somewhat angry about this. “Don’t you like people touching your things?” demands Chester,

| "I can get you sacked!" |
“I can get you sacked, do you know that? I’m your boss!”

| "No, your family are my bosses" |
Matthew points out that in reality Chester’s family are his bosses,

| "I saw you with Hannah" |
so he is asked, “What if I tell them that you take punters upstairs? I saw you with her.”
Matthew is adamant that Hannah is not interested in him, and he does not want her.

| "She's upset because you have split up" |
“She was drunk and upset, because you had split up!” stresses Mathew, “And I was trying to sober her up. She’s upset – she’s heartbroken – and she feels like a fool!” This has a calming effect on Chester.

Adrian is ready to leave,

| . . . and is very grateful to Jim |
and says he will never be able to thank Jim properly for this. Jim replies that there is no need, and he should just make sure he looks after his lovely family.

| He hears that Jim will invest in his business |
“And I have decided to go ahead with the investment – I’ll go to the bank to transfer the money this afternoon.”

| "Oh, not leaving already, are you?" |
Eileen comes in, pretending that she hopes he is not leaving, as she has enjoyed having him here; “Maybe you can bring the family next time,” she suggests, then adds, “Just one thing before you go – I would like to know what you’ve got in the pocket of your bag. I may be crazy, but I want to see what you have in there.”

Adrian tells Jim that she is completely bonkers, but Jim replies, “Just get it over with,” and unzips the bag.

| Jim makes a discovery |
He too is amazed to find the jewellery, including the gold locket; Adrian unconvincingly alleges he had no idea they were there, and that Eileen is setting him up.

“Sit down!” roars Jim, “You’re not going anywhere!”

| Chester explains the situation to Mathew |
Now in a much calmer state, Chester explains that he arranged to go to Australia with Hannah as a surprise. “You would think I said I wanted to emigrate and start a family!”

Mathew advises that he always tries to avoid surprises, and wonders why Hannah did not want him to go.
Chester continues, “She said she wants to see her family and friends on her own,

| "I went a bit nuts!" |
“but I think she’s more angry about the way I reacted – I went a bit nuts!” Mathew sympathises that it shows that Chester cares. “I just wanted our first holiday to be perfect – but it was the total opposite – everyone argued, and now I’m single!” he laments.

“You don’t have to be single,” Mathew assures him, “She misses you – it’s not too late. Go up there – if it doesn’t work out, at least you’ll know you tried.” Chester get up, apologising for the damage,

and saying he will get Garry to fix it.

| "You heard what Mam said on her deathbed" |
As holds the locket in his hand, Jim demands, “You were there, weren’t you, when Mam said on her deathbed that this was for Courtney? That was her last wish – so now that she’s dead, you thought you’d help yourself!”

Eileen also asks, “Do the girls deserve my jewellery? You were going to sell them because you have no money – his business is a failure – he’s up to his ears in debt!”

Adrian replies that with Jim’s money, it will soon be back on track.

| "The family haven't seen him for ages" |
Eileen continues, “I spoke to Claire – the family hasn’t seen him in ages. His story was all a lie. Thank goodness I interfered!”

| "You were going to let me rot in prison!" |
Jim is furious that his brother was going to let him go to prison, and then live off his money. “I was a fool to believe you – I’m not going anywhere. You can take your punishment!”

| Hannah tries to tidy herself up |
Hannah is trying to rescue her make-up when Chester appears in the doorway and asks if she is all right. “What are you doing here?” she asks;

he has brought some crisps and salted peanuts upstairs, and tells her that apparently, salt helps you to sober up and eases the hangover.

“I don’t want you to see me like this – my makeup’s all over my face!” she protests, “How did you know I was here?” He tells her that Mathew informed him,

| "You found the vodka, then?" |
and he presumes she found the bottle of vodka. He thinks that now it is time to sober up.

“You must be so angry with me, because I tried to snog Mathew,” she admits, and he replies that he knows, because he saw her. “Oh, Chester, I’m so sorry – I’m a little bit tipsy and upset, but it was my fault. Mathew pushed me off, and if he hadn’t, I would have pushed him off –

“because you’re the one I like – no, not like – love! I love you, Chester!”
If that is the case, he wonders why she is snogging other people; “Because I’m stupid – we’ve both done stupid things,” she sniffs. Chester thinks that is true of all four of them, including Mam and Colin, and confirms that Colin is going to be all right.

Jim goes on, “Eileen was right – you’re selfish and too much of a coward to face your punishment. I couldn’t bear to think of you not seeing your children! Do you know how I feel when I wake up, knowing I won’t see Courtney?”
“I’ve taken advantage of you, and I’m sorry,” answers Adrian, “I had no-one to turn to, and you’re the only one who has always been there for me.”

Jim tells him emphatically that he always runs away from problems, but now he has to face up to them.

and Eileen points out Jim has alibis from everyone in the Deri. Jim adds, “I’m doing this for your sake – you can’t run away for ever,”

so Adrian reluctantly takes the phone.

“It’s not like I don’t want you to come,” explains Hannah, but Chester concedes that he understands, and he knows he has been dramatic. It is just that he had planned the whole summer for them; “Without telling me,” she comments.

Thinking of not seeing her for a couple of weeks made him panic,

and she describes him as, “Quite cute!”
“I don’t want to lose you,” he murmurs, and she reminds him that she has dumped him.

“That’s a shame, because I might love you too,” he continues, “Although you look rough and have makeup all over your face. Let’s go home,” and she nods.

As they come downstairs, Mathew greets them, “Here they are, the Posh and Becks of Cwmderi back together.” Hannah tells him she is sorry, as she cannot handle vodka; “Why would you?

“They don’t sell it in Australia, remember?” jokes Mathew, and Chester thanks him for looking after her.

Jim comes back in and reports to Eileen that Adrian has admitted everything, but he is still feeling terrible. “He won’t get a prison sentence – he talks his way out of everything, and lands on his feet.

“I thought I was good at summing up people, and could tell if someone was trying to deceive me, but I didn’t have a clue, did I, with my own brother?

| "I'm ashamed of the way I've treated you" |
“But what I’m most ashamed of is the way I’ve treated you – I can’t blame Adrian for that. You’re the only person who hasn’t tried to take advantage of me – and I turned my back on you – you’re an angel!”
Eileen admits she is far from being an angel, and tells him that if he still wants to go, she will not stop him, although she would like him to stay.

Jim and Eileen bring more flowers to the graveside; Jim muses, “I can see her now, rolling her eyes, and saying, ‘At last, you’ve both come to your senses’.” Eileen remarks that Courtney was always a lot wiser than her father.
