| Adrian's conscience prevents him sleeping |
At 04:56 in the morning, Adrian lies in bed, looking at the locket and wondering what he should do.
| Colin's condition is monitored . . . |
Meanwhile, Colin lies in his hospital bed in a coma;
| . . . and he is checked by the nurse |
a nurse comes to check on his condition.
Britt is frying sausages and bacon in the chalet;
| Another fried breakfast |
as she sits down to eat them,
| Peace seems to have been restored |
Chester and Hannah arrive, as they now appear to be reconciled.
| Britt does not like not having her say |
Britt explains that she does not like things being arranged without involving her, and Chester admits that he may have been rather dramatic.
Britt assumes that Colin is at home, sulking;
| "We're going to the spa" |
Hannah says that they are going up to the spa, and Chester asks if his mother is worried about Colin, but she replies that he is old enough to look after himself.
| "If he thinks that will make me worry . . ." |
“If he thinks a disappearing act is going to make me worry – well!”
| "We could put the tent in front of the chalet" |
Chester proposes moving the tent nearer to the chalet, but his mother objects to him being outside her front door. When they have gone, she does betray some signs of being anxious.
| "We should leave today" |
Adrian comes in to find Jim looking worried; Eileen is down in the shop, sorting out the papers. Adrian thinks they should leave today;
| "What's keeping you here?" |
“You’ve made up your mind – what’s keeping you here?” he asks Jim,
| "Eileen is very upset" |
who is reluctant to leave Eileen when she is very upset, and insists she needs to get used to the idea first.
Adrian predicts she will never get used to it; “If you stay here another day, week, month – you’re going to have the same arguments every day. You’ve always been the same, putting others before yourself –
| "It's time you put yourself first" |
“it’s time you put yourself first. You’ve got a chance to be happy.”
| A rare smile from Jim Probert |
Jim concedes that he may be right, and recalls the time when his brother cut his hair while he was asleep – he had an Mohican for weeks. “That’s the first time I’ve seen you laugh since I got here,” Adrian comments, and urges him to go and pack, although Jim protests he has not finished his breakfast.
| "Haggis for dinner tonight!" |
“Claire’s cooking dinner tonight – and it’s haggis!” Adrian tempts him.
| "She didn't tell you that?" |
As they pack up all their camping equipment, Hannah reveals some of the things Britt told her about Chester, and he says she cannot be left alone with his mother again.
| "So don't go off in a huff again!" |
“So don’t go off in a huff again!” she warns.
“I know this holiday hasn’t been great, but the next one will be better, I promise,” Chester tells her,
| "I wasn't going to tell you, but . . ." |
“I wasn’t going to tell you until I’d booked the tickets, but I’ve found the money to go to Australia. That account which Colin set up for me to go to university – I’ve borrowed from it.”
| "You've done what?" |
Hannah protests, but he replies that Colin wanted him to go travelling, and that he will pay it back. She is not happy; “Do you know how controlling you sound? I do what I want with who I want –
| Chester does not like the reception he is getting |
“no man is going to boss me around, do you hear?”
| "I'm leaving today, Eileen" |
Jim breaks the news to Eileen that he has decided to leave today; “The decision’s been made, so there’s no point putting it off.”
| "Well, don't let me stop you" |
She replies that she is not going to stop him, if that is what he wants to do. “There’s a lot to sort out financially, of course,” he adds, but she sneers that she will not make life difficult for him.
| "You have a right to some of the money" |
He continues, “I’d like to invest my share of the money from APD in Adrian’s business, but as my wife, you have a right to some of that money as well.”
| "Do what you like with it!" |
She snarls, “I don’t want your money – do what you like with it! But don’t do anything you regret – you’ve worked hard for it.” He assures her he knows what he is doing.
| Adrian looks distinctly uneasy about the police |
All of a sudden, someone comes into the flat – DS Davies. “Mrs Probert, we’ve got some bad news – do you want to sit down?” she says,
| Eileen is told about Colin's accident |
“Colin Evans was knocked off his bike yesterday on Ponthenri Road, near Plas Hendy junction. He is in a critical condition in hospital. We’ve been trying to contact Britt Monk, but we can’t get hold of her, and according to a records he works for you.”
| Adrian is somewhat anxious |
Adrian is looking very uncomfortable,
| "What happened to Colin?" |
and Eileen asks what happened to Colin. “He was hit by a car, but the driver did not stop,” answers the DS.
| "Is there any hope of catching the driver?" |
Adrian enquires if there is any hope of catching the driver, and is told that the police are doing everything they can.
| The DS will give Eileen a lift to the hospital |
Eileen is offered a lift to the hospital, and she tells Jim to try and contact Britt.
| "Don't leave while I'm at the hospital" |
She also wants Jim to promise he will not leave while she is at the hospital.
| "You really don't want me in Australia, do you?" |
Chester maintains that it is nothing to do with his mother; “It’s my money – you really don’t want me in Australia!
| "You must like that boyfriend a lot!" |
“You must like him a lot – that boyfriend you’ve got there – it’s obvious!”
As Britt comes out of the chalet, Chester adds, “It’s not about the money now – I want to know what’s going on!”
| Hannah tells Britt what he has done |
Hannah reveals to Britt that he has moved money from his university account to buy a flight to Australia – online, as he knew the password. He blames Hannah,
| "You can't touch that until you're 18" |
and Britt yells at him that he cannot touch that money until he is 18 – furthermore it is not holiday money.
| "A holiday you haven't even been invited on" |
“A holiday you haven’t even been invited on,” Hannah reminds him, “And just to make it clear, I don’t have a boyfriend –
| "You don't trust me!" |
“the reason you’re so obsessed with coming is that you don’t trust me!”
| "Right, I give up!" |
Chester has had enough, throws down his rucksack and walks away,
| He gives the barbecue a good kick as he passes |
kicking the barbecue on his way.
| She certainly does not look happy |
Hannah looks distraught.
| Jim cannot contact Britt |
“I still can’t get hold of Britt – Garry said they’ve gone camping but he didn’t know where,” says Jim, very concerned.
| "I've packed some of your stuff" |
Adrian has packed some of Jim’s stuff and suggests he can buy everything up there;
| "I can't go now, can I?" |
Jim is adamant that he cannot go now, as things have changed, and he wants to stay another couple of days, telling Adrian, “You go, if you have to – there’s no rush for me to come.”
| "Well, I've got to go now!" |
Adrian is so intent on leaving immediately that Jim’s suspicions are roused; “Why now? What’s the rush?
| "I want to know what's happened!" |
“If you want me to come into business with you, I want to know what’s happened!”
| "I knocked Colin off his bike!" |
After a long pause, Adrian admits, “I did it – I knocked Colin off his bike. The police won’t be long coming around here, knocking on your door.
| Jim is lost for words |
Jim is astounded.
| "Col, please don't leave me – I need you" |
Eileen sits by the hospital bed and pleads, “Col, don’t leave me – I need you,” but of course there is no response from the inert figure.
| "I'm only thinking of the family" |
Adrian explains, “Don’t hate me, Jim – I was thinking of my family. Claire and the children are dependent on me.
| "Money has been tight" |
Money has been tight since I had the accident on the site – I can’t manage half the things I used to do.
| "Keeping my head above water" |
“I’m struggling to keep my head above water.”
| "You'd leave Colin half dead by the side of the road!" |
“And that’s why you want my investment,” realises Jim, but Adrian replies that he does not want to steal from his only brother. “No – but you’d leave Colin half dead by the side of the road,” shouts Jim,
| "It doesn't justify what you've done!" |
“Things might not be easy, but it doesn’t justify what you’ve done!” Adrian protests that he cannot go to prison, as the business is doing well but it could do better. He thought Jim would like first refusal.
“How do you always manage to get yourself in these situations?” demands Jim,
| "Don't turn you back on your brother" |
but Adrian urges him not to turn his back.
| "I want to go home" |
Hannah is sick of this holiday and wants to go home;
| "We Monks can be a bit wild" |
Brit sympathises that the Monks can be a bit wild when they argue, but Hannah replies that ‘being a Monk’ is not a valid excuse this time.
| "Have we all cooled down?" |
Chester comes back, enquiring if everyone has cooled down; Britt points out that they do not need to go over everything again, but she does want him to put the money back in his savings account. He reluctantly agrees, and Hannah asks for five minutes of privacy.
| "I am sorry, Hannah" |
Chester apologises to her,
| "It's too late!" |
but she says, “It’s too late – I’ve had enough!” He is willing for her to go back to Australia on her own, but she is insistent,
| "It's over!" |
“It’s over! Don’t beg – I’m not changing my mind!” He dejectedly walks out of the chalet, while she too looks very upset.
| Is he looking for something else valuable? |
Adrian is looking at various ornaments, presumably to see if they are valuable, and is told by Jim that Eileen is on her way home;
| "No change in Colin's condition" |
there is no change in Colin’s condition.
Adrian is still very keen on leaving today, but Jim demands if that is all he cares about.
| "It's not fair to leave Eileen!" |
“Eileen is upset, and it’s not fair to leave her!” Adrian replies that they have to go, as they cannot be here when the police find more evidence. Jim urges him to go; “I’ll come when it’s all settled.”
Eileen returns, commenting that Colin looks so fragile, and asks, “What if he doesn’t wake up?”
| Jim glowers at his brother |
She clings to Jim for comfort.
| Chester gets out the phone again . . . |
Chester returns to his mother’s car, and again retrieves her phone;
| . . . and sees the message about Colin |
he finds several messages. “Britt, please phone when you get this. Colin’s in hospital.”
He hurries back to the chalet,
| They are packing their bags |
where Britt and Hannah are packing to go home; “You can’t make excuses for Chester for ever,” Hannah says.
Britt thinks it is such a shame, as they were so happy the other day;
| "When you get home, you might change your mind" |
“Once you get home, you might find you miss him, and change your mind.”
| "I don't think so, Britt" |
Hannah cannot see this happening.
| Chester arrives with the news |
Chester rushes in telling them that there has been an accident, and Colin is in hospital.
| "Sorry I have to leave so soon" |
“Thanks for letting me stay – sorry I have to leave so soon,” says Adrian,
| His way is barred by the police |
but as he turns to go, he meets DS Davies in the doorway.
“Eileen Probert, we’d like to ask you a few questions about Colin Evans’ accident. Two eyewitnesses saw your car on Ponthenri Road yesterday afternoon at 1:30pm – the same time as Mr Evans’ accident. We need to know exactly what you did yesterday, and we’ll be inspecting your car.”
| "I haven't used the car since Monday" |
Eileen replies that she did not go anywhere, and has not used the car since Monday.
| The net is closing in |
As Adrian looks increasingly shifty,
| "I was driving the car – I hit Colin!" |
Jim speaks up, “I’m the one you want – I was driving the car – I hit Colin!”
| Eileen cannot believe he would confess to this |
Eileen looks incredulously at him.
