| Debbie 'reads the tea leaves' |
At breakfast time in Maes-y-Deri, Debbie looks into the tea leaves in Josh’s cup, and comments, “Oh, it says here you want to run away and turn your back on your family.”
| "We don't do that" |
He points out that they do not read tea leaves,
| "Don't be so mean!" |
and both Mark and Vicky tell her to stop being so mean.
Josh hates arguments like this;
| "You shouldn't have said you don't like living here!" |
“So you shouldn’t have said you don’t like living here!” replies. He elucidates that he only said he finds it difficult, living in a house. “Why did you come back yesterday then?” she asks, and when he says that he likes her,
| "You might as well go today!" |
she snarls, “But not enough to stay here! Listen, if you’re leaving, you might as well go today!”
Mark tells her that she is being silly now, but she continues to insist, “I want you out by the end of the afternoon. You can use the cases in Ricky’s wardrobe if you want,” and leaves for the café.
| "It doesn't matter what I want" |
Although Vicky urges him not to take any notice, as her mother is not thinking straight, Josh decides that he is going; “It doesn’t matter what I want – it’s what Debbie wants that matters.”
| Elgan has been waiting outside the door |
Gaynor arrives home and finds Elgan waiting for her outside the door; she apologises that the battery on her phone is dead, and he admits that he was getting worried.
| "Maybe I should have a key" |
“Maybe I should have a key,” he tentatively suggests, “It’s only a thought to make life easier.”
| Gaynor is not eager for that to happen |
She does not appear very comfortable with the idea, saying that she has lived on her own for so long, and he readily accepts this.
| Kath goes to the caravan |
Josh packs away his belongings into the caravan, and Kath approaches;
| "Mark tells me you're leaving" |
“Mark phoned me to say that you’re leaving today,”
| "I'm not welcome here any more" |
and he replies that he is not welcome here any more. “So you’re just going to run away with your tail between your legs?” she demands, “I thought you were more of a man that. Were you going to tell me you were leaving – or just disappear?”
| "I'll miss having you around" |
Revealing some emotion in her voice, she goes on, “I will miss having you around.” Josh will always be grateful to her for trying to bring Debbie and him together. She begs him to give Debbie more time, pointing out that she has always been stubborn.
| "You could spend a little holiday in the caravan" |
Josh tells Kath that she is welcome to spend a little holiday in the caravan, but she does not think that is a good idea, emphasising that he needs to focus on Debbie. “If things weren’t quite so complicated . . .” she begins,
| A farewell kiss . . . |
then Josh kisses her
| . . . and Kath walks disconsolately away |
and she walks sadly away.
| "He's a bit hot – and has a runny nose" |
Sara is anxious, as Ifan feels rather hot, and he has a runny nose, so she thinks they ought not to go.
| "You can't take a baby to a pub if he's got a cold" |
“You can’t take a baby to a pub if he’s got a cold,” she insists.
| "We can still go . . ." |
Jason is keen to go to this celebration,
| ". . . I'll get Mam to come round for an hour" |
and suggests that his mother could come and look after Ifan for an hour.
Kath enters the café and tells Debbie, “I hope you’re pleased with yourself.
| "Josh feels terrible, thanks to you!" |
“Josh feels terrible, thanks to you. You should have tried to understand, rather than giving him a hard time – he thinks the world of you – goodness only knows why! Answer me this – would you leave Cwmderi to go and live with Josh?”
| "I have a family here, and the café" |
Debbie argues that she has family here, and the café – this is where her life is. She is told, “Yes, and Josh has a gypsy lifestyle.
| "You're being too hard on him!" |
“You’re expecting too much, and being too hard on him! He should be free to go wherever he wants. And do you know what? Mark would do anything to have one last chat with his father.
| Is this tirade having an effect on Debbie? |
“Josh is there for you – it’s a shame you’re too busy sulking to appreciate that!”
Kath turns and leaves, while Debbie looks thoughtful;
| "I've got to pop out for a minute, Gwen" |
then she takes off her apron and tells Gwen that she will be back soon – there is something she needs to do.
| But when she rounds the corner . . . |
She walks along the street, past APD,
| . . . there is a conspicuous absence of caravan |
but is horrified to see that the caravan is no longer there.
| "I hope he's all right" |
At the celebration in the Deri, Sara is still fretting about Ifan;
| Esther, in her satin dress |
Hywel proposes a toast, “To Esther!”
| Sheryl remembers Meilyr and Wil |
Sheryl adds that they must not forget those who are not with them today, Meilyr and Wil. She confesses that she has frightened Wil too much.
| "It's Cwmderi that has frightened him" |
Jason suggests that it is Cwmderi that has frightened him, and that being in Canada is more fun than being here. Sheryl angrily replies, “Do you know what?
| "Everyone thinks they know what's best for Wil!" |
“Everyone thinks they know what’s best for Wil – Darren, Anita, and now Jason Francis! Everyone apart from his mother!”
| "Come on, Sheryl – you're spoiling things" |
Hywel tries to calm her down.
| Sara administers a comforting cwtch |
Sara tells her that today is supposed to be a happy day and gives her a hug; “Wil knows that you love him, whether he’s in Cwmderi or Canada,” Sara assures her, “What you have is stronger than that, isn’t it?”
| Elgan brings flowers |
Elgan brings flowers for Gaynor to say sorry for putting her in an awkward position by asking for a key, and regrets that he made her feel uncomfortable. She insists that there is nothing to forgive,
| Gaynor looks at her keys |
and as she takes the flowers into the kitchen, she looks at her bunch of keys.
| Josh comes in the back way |
In the café, Josh creeps in by the back door and surprises Debbie;
| "I would never go without saying goodbye to you" |
“I would never go without saying goodbye to you,” he says.
| Gaynor appears to be waiting for something to happen |
As Gaynor and Elgan enjoy their salad, he discovers something on his plate;
| "Where did you get this salad?" |
“Where did you get this salad?” he asks, “If it’s a bug, it’s a very strange one!”
| He finds a key, among his salad leaves |
It is, of course, a key, which Gaynor describes as being easier for both of them. He does not want her to feel as if he is putting pressure on her, but she assures him he is welcome here any time he wants.
He jokes that if he had eaten this, it could be very serious,
| "I'm on very good terms with the doctor" |
but she answers that she is on very good terms with the doctor.
| "It must be a nightmare for Sheryl" |
When they arrive home, Jason is apologetic about what he said; Sara realises, “No wonder she’s so sensitive – it must be a nightmare for her. I was only trying to cheer her up.”
| "You're not going to live in Canada, are you?" |
Then she looks at Ifan, and tells him, “You’re not going to live in Canada, are you? No, you’re going to stay with Mam for ever.”
| "You will have to give him freedom one day" |
Jason takes issue with this, insisting that she will have to give him some freedom at some point, as he will want to be independent just like every other child. “What if the other children leave him out?” she worries,
| "But what if he can't cope?" |
“What if this big world is too much for him, and he can’t cope?”
| "Well, if he's anything like his mother . . ." |
Jason points out that, if he is anything like his mother, nothing will stop him.
| "I couldn't leave without trying, at least" |
Josh has enjoyed his cup of tea in the café; “I couldn’t leave without sorting things out – well, without trying, at least,” he says,
| "We'll both have room to breathe" |
“The last thing I want is for us to become strangers – there’s no rush, is there? We can take our time and get to know each other slowly. We’ll both have room to breathe this way.”
| "I want you here" |
She insists that she does not want room to breathe, she wants him here, as she has never had that. “When I was a little girl, I would have done anything to have a father like everyone else – one that would always be around, one that will never leave me.”
| "I would have been, if I knew you existed" |
He assures her that he would have been, if only he had known that she existed. He is not leaving her now, not really; “Finding out that I have a daughter is the best thing that ever happened to me, but if I stayed, I wouldn’t be happy.
| "We gypsies have our own way of living" |
“I know that – we gypsies have our own way of living – I don’t know anything else – it’s part of who I am. I cannot be the father you want me to be, when I’m longing to be home. Let me go, Debs – I will always be there for you, I promise.”
| "I'm going to miss you" |
She admits that she is going to miss him, but they can phone each other and he assures her she is always welcome to come to the caravan, and to bring Ricky.
| Josh stops in his tracks as she calls him 'Dad' |
As he gets up to leave, Debbie says, “Josh – Dad, if you’re ill again, come straight back – I’ll look after you.” He walks out of the door.
| Hywel finds a card with £20 inside |
Hywel has put Esther to bed, and begins looking at the congratulation cards; he finds a £20 note inside the card from Anita.
| "I don't want anything from her!" |
“Post it back through her door!” orders Sheryl, “I don’t want anything from her!”
| "This is not Anita's fault!" |
He reminds her that this is not Anita’s fault – Wil does not want to move back here, and he has told his father this. “You came this close to ruining Esther’s big day today,” he warns her, but she protests that she cannot turn her feelings off like a tap,
| "I just want Wil here!" |
and that she just wants Wil here.
“That’s not going to happen,” stresses Hywel, “Esther’s here, I’m here –
| "Esther and I are not enough for you" |
“but that’s not enough for you – or it doesn’t look like it from where I’m standing!”
| Colin comes round for a chat |
Colin comes round to Llwyncelyn; “The days are long when you don’t have any work to do,” he complains,
| "Once I get the all clear from the doc" |
“But I will be back behind the counter next week – once I get the all clear from the doc.”
| "Talking of 'the doc' . . . |
“Talking of the doc, he’s left his laptop here,” Gaynor informs Colin, “But he’ll be back later – with his key!”
| "He's so sensitive, a gentleman" |
She admits that she thinks he is lovely, and Colin is pleased to see her happy. “He’s so sensitive, a gentlemen, he would do anything for anyone.”
| "He's been helping Anita with her singing" |
“I heard that he is helping Anita with her singing,” comments Colin, and Gaynor tells him that it was torture for Elgan,
| "There's a recording on the laptop" |
and there is a recording of her on the laptop. She knows that it is naughty, but she has never heard such a noise.
| Colin's phone rings |
Colin’s phone rings, and he goes into the hall to answer it.
| Gaynor listens to a confidential conversation . . . |
Meanwhile, Gaynor finds herself listening to what Anita told the doctor some time ago about talking to her husband again, although he has been dead for almost two years.
| . . . and then is troubled to find another |
She looks concerned and stops the recording, but then finds another of her own voice, talking about the death of Sam.
| "Come on, lets listen to 'the Cabaret', then" |
Colin returns, and is looking forward to the ‘Cabaret’, as he calls it, but Gaynor says that the machine has crashed, and does not want to mess around with it.
| "Well, it's about time I was going" |
He leaves, telling her to
| "Enjoy yourself with 'Doctor Lurve'!" |
enjoy herself with ‘Doctor Lurve’,
| Gaynor is extremely anxious |
and she appears increasingly worried.
