1 May 2017

What can this fragile object be?
Sioned carries a box, marked fragile, into the flat and opens it.
A death mask of Ed?
She takes out a silver coloured mask of Ed, and addresses it, “Hello, you!”
"They must have cost a lot"
Chester has new trainers, and does not care how much they cost because he can afford them;  “I’ve just sold another essay!” he says,
But Chester can afford them
and hands Hannah her share of the money.   She intends to go shopping.
He can hardly keep up with all these orders
Then, as Chester receives another phoned order, she comes to the conclusion that no one wants to do their essays.   “Be glad about that, because we are going to be minted!” he laughs.
"These magazines are full of adverts"
In the shop, Colin is looking at a magazine;  “There’s nothing in here but adverts,” he complains, “I don’t know why people bother buying them.
"People should focus on what really matters"
People ought to spend less, and focus on what really matters.”
"Is everything all right, Colin?"
Eileen asks if everything is all right, but just then Britt arrives.
Colin goes outside to help a customer,
"He knows, doesn't he?"
and Eileen asks, “He knows, doesn’t he?   You’ve told him!”
Garry comes in with his shopping list
Before Britt can say anything, Garry comes in with a shopping list.
Garry has a business proposition
He tells Britt, “Maybe it would be an idea if you, or Colin, bought the chippy.   I’ve got enough to do, with the Deri, the garage and everything.
"Now that Colin has come into some money . . ."
“Now that Colin has come into some money . . .”   Britt objects, accusing Garry of taking advantage of Colin, but he tells her that it is none of her business.    Britt agrees that it is not right, but Garry insists that he is only thinking of her future and is doing her a favour.
“You’ve turned it into a successful business – now you can own it,” he goes on,
"No, Garry, it's not the right time!"
but she says now is the wrong time, urging him to leave Colin alone.
"I don't know why you're so obsessed"
Garry leaves, and Britt says she does not know why Eileen is so obsessed;  then Colin comes back in.
"Lucky I'm not paranoid . . ."
“Lucky I’m not paranoid, or I would think you were talking about me!” he remarks.
Gaynor is talking about essays being sold . . .
Gaynor meets Ricky outside Chester’s door, and tells him, “Listen, Ricky, Mrs Davies came to see me on Friday – it seems someone is selling essays to school pupils.
. . . and asks if Ricky knows anything
“Do you know anything about this?   No-one’s tried to sell you an essay?”
"No, I don't know anything"
Of course, he denies any knowledge.
"There is going to be trouble!"
She sternly warns him, “Whoever is responsible, and anyone who buys an essay, is going to be in trouble!”
"I'm keeping quite for Colin's sake . . ."
Outside the shop, Britt asks Eileen, “Do you really think he would have turned up here if I had told him?   I haven’t said a word – I’m keeping quiet for Colin’s sake.   He is fragile, but he’s determined to find out who was with his father on his final evening.
". . . but when I feel he should know . . ."
“If the time comes when I feel he should know, I’ll tell him.”   She walks away.
"Since when do headteachers do home visits?"
Gaynor enters the chip shop flat;  “Since when do headteachers do home visits?” asks Chester, and she replies that someone has started selling essays to school pupils.
"Your name keeps cropping up"
She explains, “I’ve been making enquiries, and the fact is your name keeps cropping up.   I thought you would appreciate the chance to defend yourself – before it all becomes official.”
"What – with my track record?"
He shrugs his shoulders, and says it is nothing to do with him;  “Every idiot knows about the essays – I was offered one but said no.   I couldn’t take the risk with my track record!”   When asked who offered him these essays,
"Siôn White!"
he tells her, “Siôn White!”
“You don’t expect me to believe that!” laughs Gaynor, but he points out that they have been having private lessons, and Siôn probably saw an opportunity.   He reminds her that after all, it is not the first time Siôn has done something stupid for money.
"Is that Ed?"
Sioned walks into the Deri with her mask, and Dani asks if it is Ed.   Garry simply asks if she got a receipt;
"I look more like Ed than that does!"
“I look more like Ed than that does!” he snarls, but Dani tells her to ignore him.
"Can I leave 'Ed'on the bar?"
“Can I leave ‘Ed’ on the bar?” requests Sioned;
"Wouldn't he be better at home with you?"
rather nonplussed, Dani suggests that he would surely be better at home with Sioned.   “The Deri meant a lot to him,” she says, but Garry is quite emphatic, calling the whole idea ‘weird’.
Sioned realises that she has made a mistake;  “I thought keeping him here would keep him alive amongst his friends.”
"Sioned, you've forgotten something!"
She turns to leave, but Garry reminds her that she has forgotten something.
"I'm sending you to charm school!"
“Next birthday, I’m sending you to charm school, OK?” Dani grumbles.
Colin comes into the pub with the grocery order;
"When I lost Brandon . . ."
Garry tells him, “I remember when I lost Brandon, I found that what helped was to keep myself busy.   Now that you’ve got some money,
Another one who wants Colin to buy the chippy
“maybe it would be a good idea if you bought the chippy.   Britt and I thought you’d do a great job – you’re good with people, you understand the business.   You’ll get a good price for it.”
Colin looks increasingly grim
Colin, who has not said a word, turns and walks out.
"Haven't you got better things to do?"
He crosses the road, and shouts to Britt, “Haven’t you and Garry got better things to do than work out how to spend my money?
"Find someone else to buy your chippy!"
“Find someone else to buy your chippy!   I hoped that you were different from everybody else!”
"This has nothing to do with you!"
He marches back to the shop, where he also shouts at Eileen, “For once, this has nothing to do with you!”
Sioned ponders upon the likeness of Ed
Sioned sits in her flat, staring at the mask;  Dani comes in, saying that she has come to collect ‘Ed’.   Sioned understands why Garry said no,
"I'll persuade Garry"
but Dani insists that he does not have to get his way all the time, and that she will persuade him.
"People thought our marriage was a sham"
“People thought our marriage was a sham, but I choose to remember the good times,” says Sioned, but Dani points out that her set-up at home is not that great either.
"Garry Monk should come with a Government Health Warning!"
“Living with Garry Monk should come with a government health warning,” moans Dani, “At least that statue won’t boss you around!”
"My life is a 'car crash'!"
Sioned describes her life as ‘a car crash’, and tells Dani he does not know how lucky she is.   “Want to know how lucky I am?” enquires Dani, “They sent the wrong fish to the salon!   The stockist said it was my fault,
"I'm really scared to tell Garry!"
“but I’m really scared to tell Garry.   He makes me feel so useless, treating me like one of his staff – so, at the moment, the last thing I feel is lucky.”
Not another order?"
The text tone on Chester’s phone sounds, and Hannah urges him not to answer, or Gaynor will guess it is him.   He replies, in a superior fashion, “You heard her – she’s asked loads of people – she hasn’t a clue!”
"If Diane hears about this . . ."
Hannah is terrified that if Diane hears about this, she will get sent back to Australia for good, so this is very serious.
"No, Chester – it could be a trap!"
She begs Chester not to answer his phone, as it could be a trap;
"She'll soon be worrying about some other crisis"
he replies. “There will be another crisis at the school soon, and Gaynor will forget about pointless essays – trust me!”   Hannah does not appear to share his confidence.
"It must be difficult, with someone else's child"
Sioned tells Dani that she always seems so happy, but is told that Dani sometimes gets stressed about Gwern.   Sioned sympathises that it must be difficult, living with someone else’s child.   She does not think she could do that, knowing that they would never love you in the same way.
Dani says she gets on very well with Gwern, but she is not his mother;
"I feel as if I'm looking after an antique"
“It sometimes feels as if I’m looking after someone else’s antique, and I don’t want to break it.”
Garry is checking up on her
She receives a text, asking if she is on her way back.
"Well, 'Ed' is coming – are you?"
Dani insists that Sioned is coming with her, and so is the ‘statue’.   Sioned assures her that she is a fantastic mother to Gwern.
Chester demands payment . . .
Chester and Hannah see Ricky in the street, and Chester demands £20,
. . . but Ricky wants nothing more to do with it
but Ricky is adamant he does not want any more essays, as Gaynor has been questioning him.
"Have you been blabbing?"
Chester is suspicious;  “Someone has been blabbing, because she came to see me.”
Ricky is surprised he is still flogging the essays, calling him ‘nuts’, and walks away;  “If I find you grassed me up!” shouts Chester,
"You idiot, Chester!"
but Hannah tried to calm him down.
And the orders keep flooding in
However all that he is worried about is another order, just received on his phone.
"You can go up when your Dad gets back"
In the Deri, Gwern is at the bar and wants to go upstairs, but Dani tells him to wait until his Daddy is back, then has a phone call.   Making sure that the coast is clear,
Orange juice for Gwern on the right . . .
Sioned swaps the bottle of orange juice
. . . but now they seem to have changed places
with one of Iguana Pop.   Flustered by the phone call, Dani hands the bottle to Gwern.
"Siôn, can you ring back, please?"
Gaynor leaves a message for Siôn to phone her back, and then pours herself a glass of wine.   There is a knock on the back door;
Colin looks somewhat troubled
it is Colin, looking very upset, who says he did not know who else to go to.
"What's that thing doing here?"
When Garry returns, he is not pleased to see ‘Ed’ back on the bar;
Gwern seems reluctant to hand it over
then he sees Gwern with the bottle beside him, which he is not keen to hand over to his father.    “How did he get that?” he asks Dani,
"Dani gave it to me"
and Gwern indicates he got it from her.
Gaynor rejects Siôn's call
Gaynor’s phone rings, but she rejects the call,
"Can I hide here for a while?"
as Colin tells her, “I’m not right, Gaynor – can I hide here for a while?   I’m hiding from everyone –
"People want to help themselves"
“I’m not sure any more if people want to help me, or help themselves.   At the moment, I just want someone to worry about me,” and Gaynor volunteers to take this rôle.
"Well, I don't know what I want to do"
He explains, “Garry and Britt want me to buy the chip shop.   I don’t want to – well, I’m not sure.”   She answers that if he does not want to, he has to be honest with them.   “But I don’t want to let them down,” he continues,
"Life was much easier when I was poor"
“Life was much easier when I was poor – no one expected anything from me.”   Gaynor recalls that he did complain a lot then, as well.
Gaynor listens sympathetically
“The fact is, it breaks my heart just think I’ll never see dad walking in here again, cracking some stupid joke, drinking your expensive wine.   I’d give all the money away to have one more day with him – but I can’t.   It’s not fair.”
"What if he had drunk it all?"
“What if he had drunk it all?” demands Garry, but Dani points out that he did not,
"I must have given him the wrong bottle"
while Sioned sits nearby, looking innocent.
“It was busy – I must have given him the wrong bottle,” pleads Dani, but Garry asks how she can be so irresponsible.   “It was a mistake – I’m sorry – it won’t happen again!” she assures him.
"I shall take my son upstairs!"
Garry is adamant that he will take his son upstairs;
Devious Sioned's little plan is working
Dani looks devastated, whereas Sioned is wearing a conspiratorial smile.
