| "It's odd he changed his story" |
At Bryntirion, DJ puts it to Jason that it is odd that Dr Pritchard changed his story; “Or he withheld information, it’s just the same. Why would anyone do that?
| "He has something to hide" |
“Because they have something to hide. Mam didn’t want to die alone, Jason, so why would she take the tablets while no one was there? She was too afraid – she must have asked the doctor to give her the tablets, and he agreed.”
| "You don't know that, DJ" |
Jason points out that DJ does not know that, but then Cadno comes in with the vegetables,
| DJ expounds his theory to Cadno |
and DJ informs her, “I found out that it was Dr Pritchard’s fault that Mam died!”
| Sioned walks past without a word |
Sioned walks past the Deri just as Dani and Garry are coming out; she keeps walking. Dani says she does not want Garry anywhere near Sioned,
| "Not her or 'Dead Man Walking'!" |
and he confirms that he has no intention of going near her; “Not her or ‘Dead Man Walking’! I expect he is too ashamed to show his face.”
| Beti must be unwell |
Then he sees Elgan emerging from Beti’s house next to the Deri, and invites him and Gaynor for a meal tonight.
| "We don't need a special occasion, do we?" |
“We don’t need an occasion, do we? I thought it would be fun.” Elgan thanks him for the invitation.
| "Why, Garry?" |
When the doctor has gone, Dani asks why he asked them for a meal, and he replies that she needs something to take her mind off what is going on.
| "Dr Pritchard is a good man" |
Cadno insists, “You can’t point the finger like that – Dr Pritchard is a good man.”
| "You don't know anything about him" |
DJ protests that she does not know anything about him – no-one knew him at all six months ago.
| "Wasn't that Linda's wish?" |
“Even if he did give her the tablets, wasn’t it Linda’s wish?” asks Cadno. He maintains that his mother would still be here if the doctor had not interfered.
Jason considers that it is strange the doctor did not mention “do not resuscitate” until yesterday;
| "I would have called the ambulance straightaway" |
“I would have called the ambulance straightaway. I’m no doctor, but maybe they could have done something.”
| "Something is not right here!" |
DJ is adamant that something is not right here.
| Sioned does some spying |
Sioned notices DS Davies knocking at the door of number 10, and eavesdrops
| "The police will not be pressing charges" |
as she tells Ed that the police will not be pressing charges in connection with his confession to the murder of Dewi Owen.
| Ed is absolutely astounded – but Kelly is pleased |
“We don’t have enough evidence.”
| "He has to pay for what he did!" |
Sioned is by this time standing behind her, and demands, “Did I hear that right? You have to charge him! He has to pay for what he did!”
| "This is none of your business!" |
The DS points out that this is none of her business,
| Kelly gives Sioned one of her looks |
and goes into the house.
| "I've told you what happened!" |
Ed cannot understand; “I’ve told you what happened!” DS Davies’ reply is that it seems he was defending himself,
| "Understandable, if he was coming at you with a statue" |
which is understandable if Dewi was coming at him with a statue.
“It’s simple – the CPS will not take you to court for manslaughter if it’s almost impossible to prove it.” Ed once again insists that he has confessed, but is told, “We can’t go to court based on your word alone – we don’t have any evidence to prove your story.”
| "How much evidence do you want?" |
“How much evidence do you want?” rages Ed, “I wouldn’t make it up!” The DS points out that his story is inconsistent, and that she believes there is a strong possibility that he is making it up to get away from Sioned.
| "I'm right that you're afraid of her, aren't I?" |
“I know that you deny that, but it’s clear to me that you’re afraid of her – and she wouldn’t be able to get to you in prison. I’m right that you’re afraid of her, aren’t I, Mr Charles?”
| Kelly steps in |
Ed remains silent, so Kelly speaks out, “Stop denying it – tell the truth.
| "She's been abusing him for months" |
“He’s terrified of her – she’s been abusing him for months.”
| "Please, this is your last chance" |
She pleads with Ed, “Please, this is your last chance to tell the truth – I’m begging you, please, tell her – now!”
| Ed nods, very hesitantly |
He nods his head, almost imperceptibly.
| Sioned is keeping watch opposite number 10 |
Meanwhile, across the street, Sioned is watching the door;
| "Are you all right, Sioned?" |
Gwyneth comes round the corner and wonders what she is looking at.
| "DJ's not dealing with the news very well" |
As they arrive at Llwyncelyn, Gaynor asks Elgan if he is still worried about DJ; he replies, “DJ is not dealing with the news about Linda very well.”
| "You're not cooking tonight" |
Seeing Gaynor opening the fridge, he adds, “You’re not cooking tonight – Dani and Garry have invited us over to the Deri for a meal.”
| "I'm not sure I want to go" |
“I hope you didn’t accept,” she says gloomily, “I’m not sure I want to go.” After some prompting, she admits, “Garry and I almost . . .”
| "Ooh – Gaynor Llywelyn!" |
which causes the good doctor some surprise, as he did not think she is the type to get involved with married men.
| "It almost got out of hand" |
She explains further, “We had a bit too much wine, and it almost got out of hand, and that is why I don’t want to share a table with Dani.”
“Guilt is hard to handle,” he comments,
| "Do you still fancy Garry?" |
“Do you still fancy Garry? We might enjoy ourselves –
| "As long as you keep your hands to yourself!" |
“as long as you keep your hands to yourself!”
| "Now he's going to get away with killing someone!" |
In the street, Sioned tells Gwyneth, “Ed has put me through hell, and now he’s going to get away with killing someone!”
| Gwyneth is amazed that Ed is not going down |
Gwyneth is surprised that a confession is not enough evidence; Sioned continues moaning, “There’s no telling what he said – this isn’t right, not after everything he’s done to me! And this news about Dewi is on top of everything else he’s done!
| "He deserves to be punished!" |
“He deserves to be punished, Gwyneth!”
| "Yes – and he attacked me!" |
Gwyneth tends to agrees with her; “I’ve been praying for Ed to go to prison since I found out that he attacked me – I’ve known for months. Let’s have a chat.”
| This is all too much for Ed to take in . . . |
Ed is sitting forlornly in an armchair and tells Kelly he does not want to talk to her;
| . . . and Kelly does not know what to say |
she does not know what to do.
| "I had no evidence" |
In Sioned’s flat, Gwyneth says, “I couldn’t go to the police – I had no evidence. I overheard you both talking – I knew that he would deny it, and that you would back him up.”
| Well, I was scared of him" |
Sioned continues her story that she was scared of him.
| Gwyneth has a cunning plan . . . |
“Well, make up for it now,” suggests Gwyneth, “Come to the police with me, and tell them you know Ed attacked me. At least we can get him for something – look, they might not be able to get him for manslaughter,
| "They'll have to do him for GBH!" |
“but they’ll have to do him for GBH if you support me.”
| "I'm not sure about this" |
Sioned is reluctant, but Gwyneth predicts that he could get a 10 year sentence, or longer; “Not as much as he’d get for manslaughter, but it’s better than nothing!
| Gwyneth becomes angry |
“Two minutes ago you were desperate for him to be punished, so what’s the problem? This way he’ll end up paying for something!”
| "What if the police blame me?" |
Sioned is concerned that the police may blame her for not reporting it, but Gwyneth reminds her that Ed was beating her, and the police will understand that she was afraid to spill the beans.
| "You have a chance for revenge here!" |
“There’s no point in ranting about how he ruined your life if you won’t do anything – you have a chance for revenge here! Are you going to take it, or what?”
| DJ is drowning his sorrows |
DJ is in the Deri, downing whiskies, when Cadno and Eifion come in; she advises him that is drinking is the last thing he should do.
| He tells Eifion of the doctor's responsibility for his mother's death |
DJ explains to Eifion that Dr Pritchard is responsible for his mother’s death. “Do you think she could have climbed those stairs to fetch those tablets?”
| "It would have been a challenge for her" |
Eifion admits it would have been a challenge as she was very weak, and DJ alleges that Elgan has been keeping secrets from him, and did not call an ambulance.
| "He knew they'd find out!" |
“He knew they’d find out he gave her the tablets!”
| "Stop this, DJ!" |
Cadno urges him to stop this and to accept his mother killed herself.
Eifion thinks it strange that she did not leave a note, as people usually do. DJ embroiders his story even more, “Mam didn’t have much time if he was putting pressure on her.”
| "If you really think that something's not right . . ." |
Eifion says that if he really thinks something is not right, he must tell the police, so DJ gets up and resolutely leaves the pub,
| DJ storms off to contact the constabulary |
bumping into Elgan on the way out.
| "Police, please" |
As DJ walks along the street, he takes out his phone and calls the police.
| "What's wrong with you, Garry?" |
Upstairs in the Deri, Dani asks, “What’s wrong with you, inviting a doctor and a headteacher over? They’re posh – what if my food’s not good enough? It will be a nightmare – it’s the first time I’ve cooked moussaka!”
| "Oh – hello!" |
Her diatribe is interrupted by the arrival of Gaynor and Elgan;
| Elgan invents a food allergy . . . |
he describes the terrible symptoms if he eats mushrooms. “My eyes swell up and I can’t breathe after eating them!” Dani panics, saying she must make other starters,
| . . . but Dani eventually realises he was winding her up |
but then he reveals that he was simply winding her up.
“Don’t do that, in case the baby comes early!” remarks Garry, and invites them to sit down.
| "What is so important, then?" |
DS Davies comes into Sioned’s flat, wondering what is so important that she has been summoned; she is surprised to see Gwyneth there.
| "I know who attacked me – Ed!" |
“I have new information about the attack on me,” begins Gwyneth, “I know who it was, and I can prove it now as well. It was Ed! I overheard him and Sioned talking about it six months ago.”
| "And why has it taken until now?" |
The DS queries why it has taken until now before she said anything; “I didn’t have any evidence, but Sioned is willing to back my story now. She says Ed confessed to it a few days after it happened.”
DS Davies looks somewhat sceptical
| "I was scared of him" |
as Sioned adds, “I should have come forward sooner but I was scared. I know I shouldn’t have kept quiet, but you know what my circumstances were like.”
| "Ed was attacking her like he attacked me" |
Gwyneth once again takes up the narrative, “Ed was attacking her like he attacked me.” The DS looks vaguely amused.
Gaynor recalls that Colin was useless at Izzy’s birth; “He fainted, hit his head, ended up in casualty and missed it,”
| Gaynor recalls her childbirth experience |
which Elgan finds hilarious. As Garry gets some more wine,
| "Gaynor does silly things when she is drunk!" |
Elgan warns that Gaynor does silly things when she is drunk.
| Then DS Jones arrives in the flat . . . |
Suddenly they have unexpected visitors; DS Jones and a constable. Dani naturally assumes they are looking for Garry,
| . . . looking for Elgan Pritchard |
but the DS reveals they want to speak to Dr Elgan Pritchard about Linda Harding’s suicide.
| "Why would Mr Charles attack you?" |
“If you had not argued, why would Mr Charles attack you?” asks DS Davies. Then she turns to Sioned; “Do you know why – he confessed to you, didn’t he?”
| "He lost his temper and flipped" |
Sioned thinks that he just lost his temper and flipped.
| "I would have asked him why" |
“The first thing I would have asked him is why,” comments the DS, and Sioned replies that he would not say, and became angry when she asked him. She maintains that he confessed because of guilt, the same reason he admitted to killing Dewi.
| Sioned criticises the police's lack of action |
“Mind you, I don’t know what he said, because you haven’t done anything!” she grumbles.
| "It's strange you are only coming forward now" |
DS Davies finds it quite strange that they are only coming forward now. “We are annoyed that Ed is not being punished – he deserves to be punished for something!”
| "You want to make sure Mr Charles goes to prison . . ." |
The DS shakes her head and smiles; “That’s what this is all about – you’ve both come together to create this story to make sure Mr Charles goes to prison. You don’t know what the truth is!
| ". . . but it's not going to work!" |
“Mr Charles has suffered at your hands for months, and you still want him to suffer – but it’s not going to work. When you phoned, I was on my way over anyway,
| Sioned is disconcerted by DS Davies' next words |
“to arrest you for assaulting Mr Charles.”
| "Sioned Charles, I'm arresting you!" |
She stands up and announces, “Sioned Charles, I’m arresting you on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm to Edward Charles, under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.”
| Sioned finds herself handcuffed |
The police constable handcuffs Sioned, who is seething with anger.
| "DJ is looking for someone to blame!" |
Elgan is led from the Deri, protesting that DJ is looking for someone to blame. DS Jones assures him they will talk about this at the police station. Garry and Gaynor will follow them there.
| "He's suspected of assisting Linda's suicide" |
Dani explains that Elgan is suspected of assisting Linda’s suicide, and Cadno blames Eifion.
| Sioned is also being taken away by the police |
Then they notice some activity along the street, where Sioned is also being led towards a police car; opposite, Kelly assures Ed that he has done the right thing, but he is still doubtful.
| "She brainwashed you to think you're a murderer" |
“She brainwashed you to think you’re a murderer – you’re not!” Kelly emphasises, “It was self-defence, and now you might believe me, now the DS agrees. She doesn’t have any power over you any more – you’re free!”
| Sioned does not look very pleased . . . |
Before Sioned gets into the car, she glowers at Ed.
| . . . in marked contrast to Ed, who actually smiles . . . |
He shows faint traces of a smile
| . . . as his wife is taken away |
as the car drives away.
