31 August 2017

Garry arrives back in the early hours
Garry returns to the Deri flat, where Dani has been waiting up for him;
"So you came back, did you?"
“So you came back, did you?” she says;  he replies that of course he did.
"The last time I saw you, the police were taking you away"
“Well, I wasn’t sure, because the last time I saw you, the police were taking you away,” she continues.
“After talking to them, I went to Swansea to sort it out – I sent you a text,” he tells her, but she indicates that was not enough,
Dani is ready for bed
and goes to bed.
DJ combs his mother's hair
DJ is combing Linda’s hair, and says that she looks lovely;
"I want to look my best today"
“I want to look my best today,” she says, and DJ looks worried.
Iolo is desperate for some advice
Iolo has sent a text to Ffion;  “Didn’t sleep a wink last night.  Any good tips about babies?”
"I'd better go over and help"
She tells Gethin she had better go over there, although he advises her to stay out of it.   She appreciates that it can be really tough at first,
"I thought we could have a day together"
but he was hoping they could have a day together, as he has been given a day off.
"Garry always has a hidden agenda!"
She wonders why Garry has been so generous, and hopes he is not expecting Gethin to work on Saturday;  “He always has a hidden agenda!”
Gwyneth is looking for a favour
Gwyneth arrives unexpectedly at Bryntirion, wanting DJ to work today, as Garry cannot have Gwern, and she needs a day off.
"I'm not at Awyr Iach today"
DJ points out that he will not be at Awyr Iach today, so she must be there;  she answers that it is a bit awkward, and she needs to be with Gwern.
DJ realises that Garry is in trouble again, commenting, “That’s nothing new, is it?   From what I’ve heard, he’ll go to prison this time.”
"Is Dad going to prison?"
“Is Dad going to prison?” asks Gwern, but Gwyneth tells him not to listen to DJ, who is in a bad mood.   She stresses that she needs to be with her son today,
"I need to be with my mother today!"
and in turn, DJ insists that he needs to be with his mother today, as they are going for a picnic.
“And that takes priority over my son, does it?” demands Gwyneth.
Linda tells her where to go . . .
Linda is adamant that DJ has promised to take her out today, and she will have to make other arrangements.   “Right, I shall have to take him to work with me,” grumbles Gwyneth,
. . . and DJ is glad to see the back of her
and marches out of the house.
Linda wants DJ to fetch the tablets,
"Put this letter on the table"
and put her letter on the table;  “It’s for Dai and Diane, thanking them for everything.”   He does as he is told.
"Oh, isn't she gorgeous?"
Ffion arrives at number 7, but Iolo warns her not to get broody.
"I couldn't cope with it now!"
“I couldn’t cope with the sleepless nights and dirty nappies now!” she admits;  he remarks that she has only been here one night, and already he feels like a zombie.
"But it's only temporary, isn't it?"
“It’s only temporary, isn’t it, until Liv gets back on her feet?” asks Ffion, who is told that she has not taken much interest in the baby yet, and has not even given her a name.
The compliment makes Liv smile
Liv comes in, and Ffion tells her she has a lovely little girl, and wants to take a photo to show Arwen.
The baby is handed to Liv . . .
She gives the baby to Liv, who now appears to be taking some interest.
. . . and Ffion takes a photo
After taking the photo she shows it to Liv, and says the baby looks like her.
"I don't want her to turn out like me"
“Don’t say that – I don’t want her to turn out like me,” Liv says.
Ffion speaks of her alcoholism
Ffion reveals that she went through a difficult time when she was expecting Arwen, and for a while afterwards, because of alcohol.
"But Arwen still loves me"
“I was in a very dark place,” Ffion explains, “She had to stay with her grandfather for a while – I was afraid she would hate me for ever after that, but do you know what?   She still loves me.”
The baby seems content in Liv's arms
Liv smiles, and looks at the baby.
"I can't believe a word he says"
“I can’t believe a word he says any more,” Dani tells Tyler, “If Garry goes to prison, I shall be bringing up this baby on my own.”
"I'm here to help you"
He assures her that he is here to help.   “You’re busy at school, you’re helping Liv,” she says, and when he assures her they can help each other, she cannot imagine them being one big, happy family.
"This is not the way it was supposed to be!"
“This is not the way it was supposed to be!” she laments, “I never wanted to be a single mother, and I promised myself I wouldn’t turn out like Mam!”
Tyler is adamant that she is nothing like Mam, and neither is Liv.
"You should come and see her"
Then he tells Dani the baby is out of hospital;  “You should come and see her – Liv would be grateful for your support,” he suggests,
"I don't think that's a good idea"
but she does not think that is a good idea, after yesterday.
The car stops on a clifftop
The car containing DJ and Linda pulls up on a clifftop overlooking the sea;
"This is perfect"
Linda says that this place is perfect, and just wants to sit here with him.   “I’ve spent some of the happiest days of my life at the seaside,” she reminisces, “On the beach at Newport, Mwnt, and Tresaith.   We used to go on Sunday school trip to Porthcawl every year.”
DJ maintains they were not happy days, but more like a punishment.
Linda remembers trips to the seaside
Linda continues, “You were so excited one year, you ran into the sea in your clothes – and I hadn’t brought any spare clothes.”
DJ well remembers walking around in those wet clothes all day;  Emyr Ty Canol teased me on the bus all the way home, saying I’d wet myself!”
“Remember the sandwiches your grandmother used to make?” Linda asks,
"Why was it always soggy tomato sandwiches?"
and he recalls the tomato sandwiches which were always soggy, wondering why she always chose tomatoes.   Then Linda proposes they have their picnic.
"Does she need another blanket?"
Liv asks Ffion if the baby needs another blanket, and is scared of messing up.   “You’ll be inundated with advice on how to bring up your child,” says Ffion, “The best thing you can do is ignore it all.   Just bear one thing in mind –
"You must sleep when she's asleep"
“when she’s asleep, you go to sleep too, so you can catch up.”
"You called in the cavalry, then"
Tyler comes back, and sees that Iolo has ‘called in the cavalry’;  he explains to Ffion that Garry is a problem,
"Did the police question Gethin?"
and asks if Gethin was questioned by the police too.   “Garry’s losing his touch – he never used to get caught,” Tyler comments,
"Or someone shopped him"
but Iolo thinks someone may have shopped him.
“I can’t believe he loaned a stolen car to the doctor to do his rounds!” scoffs Tyler;
"I think I'd better go"
Ffion looks concerned about this, and leaves for home.
Liv is glad that Ffion came
Liv appears much happier now, but says she does not feel sorry for Dani, as life does not always turn out the way you expect.
"You haven't eaten anything"
Linda chides DJ for not eating his sandwich, but he is not hungry.   “After I’ve gone, I want you to give my stuff to the Maenan shop.   I’m sorry I don’t have anything valuable to leave you, but I have got this,” she says,
"It was your grandmother's"
producing a ring, which was his grandmother’s.   “I didn’t give it to you when you were with Cadno, because you were already engaged, but when you meet a nice girl you can give it to her.”
"I'm not going to meet anyone"
DJ is quite convinced he is not going to meet anyone.
"Look – you used to do that!"
“Look,” she says, catching sight of a boy playing with a kite, “You used to do that!”
"I know why you've got a day off"
Ffion returns to Cysgod y Glyn, now aware why Garry has given Gethin a day off;  “Did you really expect I wouldn’t hear that Garry has been questioned by police?”   He maintains he did not want to worry her.
"Geth, you shopped him, didn't you?"
“You shopped him, didn’t you?” she demands, but he denies this
"Well, I didn't change the plates"
and stresses Garry has no-one to blame but himself for what has happened.   He does admit that he had not changed the plates, and insists that Garry deserved it, for the way he has treated Dani.
"What happens to Dani and the baby?"
“And what happens to Dani and the baby if Garry goes to prison?” she asks, “If the garage closes, you won’t have a job!”
"I did what I thought was right"
He argues that he did what he thought was right, but she enquires, “Right for whom, Geth – and what happens when he decides to get revenge?”
Dani arrives unexpectedly
Dani does in fact go to visit Liv and the baby;  she takes with her the present Garry had intended for her baby.
Dani suggests some names
She does not think that the baby looks like her grandmother, and has been thinking of names.   She asks Liv, “What about Efa, Sophie, Danielle,” but Liv dismisses all these names.
"Since when have you been an expert on babies?"
Dani asks to hold the baby, and Liv wants to know, “Since when have you been an expert on babies?”
"I looked after you when you were small"
Dani replies that she is not an expert, but did look after Liv when she was small.   “Yes – until you ran away,” snarls Liv, and Dani points out that she wanted something better.
"Your husband is a thug!"
“Look at you now – you think you’re someone, but you’re no better than me,” Liv sneers at her, “You gave me a hard time for taking that money – but your husband is a thug and a gangster.   How much money has he stolen?”
"At least he's not a druggie!"
Dani replies, “But the fact is, he’s not a druggie – and I would never dump my baby!   I’ve listened to enough of this,”
Dani hands back the baby
and, giving the baby back to Tyler, she walks out of the house.
A buoy is near to the shore
As they watch a buoy, bobbing in the water, DJ maintains it is not fair;  “Why do you have to have cancer?”
"Get the bottle of water from the bag"
but his mother says there is no point in thinking like that, and that at least, it has brought them back together.   She asks him to get a bottle of water from her bag.
"What – now?"
“Now?” he asks, and she tells him she does not want him to be here when she takes the tablets.
"Tell the police you had no idea about it"
She urges him to go for a walk or something, but he refuses to leave her;  “Tell the police you had no idea what I was planning,” she instructs, “And remember, I want my ashes scattered on Carn Menyn – there are fantastic views there.
"I don't want people thinking you were involved"
“You should go – I don’t want people thinking you were involved.”
“I don’t care,” is his retort, “I’m staying here – and I don’t care if I go to prison.
"The thought of losing you breaks my heart"
“I’ve got to live with the fact I brought you here – that’s my punishment.   I love you, Mam, and the thought of losing you is breaking my heart – the thought of never seeing you again.
"I want to spend every moment with you"
“I want to spend every moment I can with you, and I’m not going to change my mind.”
They silently look across the sea
After a few moments of silence, during which she looks out across the water, she says,
"I want to go home"
“We’d better go back to the house – I want to go home.”
Garry is rather abrupt with the solicitor
Garry, is on the phone;  “I want her to phone me as soon as she’s back from court,” he emphasises, “Or I’ll find another solicitor!”
"Where were you when I needed you?"
Dani comes back and says she has been to see Liv;
"The druggie – my sister!"
“The druggie – my sister!   Bear in mind, Garry, that blood is thicker than water – and yes, maybe her life is a mess, but my situation is not much better, is it?”
Gwern has been 'helping' at Awyr Iach
Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Gwyneth, with Gwern, who has been helping his mother at Awyr Iach, and she has given him extra pocket money.   Dani takes him to put it in his money box before he loses it.
"He's been talking about you going to prison"
Gwyneth is concerned that Gwern has been asking all morning about Garry going to prison;  she has of course told him that it will not happen,
Gwyneth fears that Garry may do that
but Garry himself appears to be less sure about this.
Iolo is glad that it is Tyler's turn tonight
At number 7, Iolo is off to work, and is pleased that Tyler is on the night shift tonight.   He thinks it is safe to say that Dani will not be helping with the baby.   Liv says that she does not want her help anyway,
"Her name is Greta!"
then she announces with a smile that the baby’s name is Greta, after her grandmother.
"But Dani is calling her baby Greta"
Tyler agrees that it is a lovely name, but Iolo wants a word in private with him, in the kitchen.   “Dani is going to call her baby Greta, and you ought to tell her,” Iolo insists, but Tyler replies that at least she is taking an interest in the baby.
"Dani will go crazy!"
“Dani will go crazy – they’re already at each other’s throats,” Iolo goes on;
He rather gullibly hopes that Liv will change her mind
Tyler, rather naïvely, maintains that Liv may change her mind.
Linda does her best to tear up the letter
Back at Bryntirion, DJ gives the letter back to his mother, who, with difficulty, tears it up.
"Things will be better from now on"
He says that things will be better from now on, and that they can find a place of their own, just the two of them, then they can spend more time together.
"We could go somewhere tomorrow"
They can go for a spin any time she wants;  “To Newport or Mwnt – we could go somewhere tomorrow,”
"No – I shall be too tired"
but she fears that she will be too tired.
She advises him to put away the food;
"I'll throw these away, then"
he takes the tablets out of the bag, proposing to throw them away,
Linda wants to keep them . . .
but she wants to keep them.   Rather than handing them to her,
. . . but DJ will put them in a 'safe place'
he says he will put them in a safe place, and she looks disappointed.
