| Linda does not want any food |
Diane brings Linda a cup of tea and asks if she would like some toast; Linda does not, as she does not feel hungry.
| DJ brings a towel downstairs |
DJ brings down a towel for her,
| "It's such a nuisance" |
and she says it is such a nuisance not being able to go upstairs.
| DJ leaves for work |
DJ cannot stand seeing his mother in this state, and decides to go to work.
| "The trouble is, it's in Swansea" |
Mathew has been told by Eifion of a mate who can take a couple of lodgers, but the problem is, he is in Swansea; Vicky is not keen on this, but Mathew reminds her that she is the one not wanting to move back in with her mother.
| "We shall find a place!" |
She, however, insists that they will find somewhere else. She has been buying cheap food, as that is all she can afford, but Mathew maintains it is not good for Nicky. She moans about the price of nappies.
| "Is everything all right between you and DJ?" |
Diane enquires of Linda if everything is all right between her and DJ, as he has been very quiet for days.
| "I asked him to help me die" |
Linda admits, “Last week, when we went out for a spin, I asked him to help me die – I don’t want to be like this any more!”
| "You know that's against the law!" |
Diane points out that what she wants is against the law.
| "This is not what I am" |
“This is not what I am, continues Linda, “I’ve always been energetic.”
| Diane sternly warns Linda |
Diane warns that if DJ does as she wants, he will have to live with his conscience for the rest of his life, and she is not sure that he could do that. He could also get into a lot of trouble, and Linda is adamant that is the last thing she wants.
| "So tell him you don't want him to do it!" |
“So tell him you don’t want him to do it,” advises Diane, “It’s not fair on him.”
Dani leaves a message for Tyler, asking if Liv has been in touch.
| Garry receives good news . . . |
Garry is also on the phone; he thanks his solicitor for the good news,
| . . . that the police have dropped the charges |
then advises Dani that the police have dropped the charges,
| "You're lucky!" |
as there was insufficient evidence.
| "Don't worry – Dad's not going anywhere!" |
Gwern comes in, and Garry tells him, “You don’t have to worry about the police any more – Dad’s not going anywhere!” and hugs him. Dani sends Gwern downstairs to get some crisps for his lunchbox.
“You must be feeling very proud of yourself,” she tells Garry, “Telling Gwern he doesn’t have to worry about the police –
| "He shouldn't have had to worry in the first place!" |
“he shouldn’t have had to worry in the first place! Raising a child is serious – you obviously don’t realise that, the way you behave with Gwern! You’ve forgotten what a normal life is!
| "It won't be like this with our baby!" |
“I’m telling you now, life won’t be like this with our baby. I don’t want her to worry about prison, the police or anything –
| "She'll be better off without a father at all!" |
“or she’ll be better off without a father at all!”
| "Can I get you anything, Mam?" |
Linda calls to DJ; he asks if she wants tea, or soup or anything. She simply wants him to sit with his mother for a minute, and when he does so,
| "What I asked you to do – it wasn't fair" |
she says, “What I asked you to do – it wasn’t fair. It’s not something a mother should ever ask her son. You’ve looked after me so well.”
| DJ still envisages a cottage for two |
He replies that he has seen a cottage on the way to Penrhewl; after she gets over her fall, he would like them to go and see it together. Then they can be together, just the two of them.
| He kisses his mother and returns to work . . . |
She says that she loves him, then tells him to go back to work, as she needs some sleep.
| . . . whereupon Linda bursts into tears |
After he goes, she bursts into tears.
| Vicky is disheartened . . . |
At the Deri, Vicky reports that everyone with a flat to let needs a bond, which they cannot afford,
| . . . and asks for money to buy bread |
and asks whether he has any money, as she forgot to buy bread. He hands over all the change he has, and while Dani’s back is turned,
| Mathew snaffles one of the Deri's pasties |
grabs a pasty for Nicky’s lunch.
| Elgan wants to take Gaynor up Snowdon |
DJ delivers a pair of walking poles from Awyr Iach to the doctor at Llwyncelyn; Elgan says he wants to get Gaynor up Snowdon one day.
| DJ offers to help with the painting |
Then DJ notices that he is doing some redecoration, and offers help with painting skirting boards. “I like painting, to be honest – it takes my mind off other things. I think that fall has affected Mam more than she is admitting.”
| "Yes, it can be harder for the family" |
Elgan sympathises that it can sometimes be harder for the family than the patient; “If there is ever anything you want to talk about, it won’t go any further,” he offers.
| "Mam had some tablets" |
DJ confesses that his mother had some tablets, but he could not do it for her – could not do what she wanted. “She gave them to me the other day, to assist her dying – I know it’s selfish, but I don’t want to lose her before I have to.”
| Elgan will go and talk with her . . . |
The doctor assures him that sometimes a person who is sick can sense when it is time to go, and at times like that, perhaps it should be their decision, if they are clear in their own mind.
DJ confirms that his mother’s mind is as sharp as it ever was; “I’m the one who’s losing the plot.” Elgan volunteers to go and sit with her, as it might help her to talk to someone else.
| . . . while DJ gets on with the painting |
DJ will stay there and continue with the painting;
| "Here's the key to Bryntirion" |
he gives the doctor a key, in case his mother is asleep.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” Elgan advises, “When the end comes, none of us knows how we will be.”
| "Everything I do is for you and the baby" |
Garry is still protesting that everything he does is done for Dani and the baby,
| "Yeah – heard that all before" |
but she replies that she has heard it all before. He insists that there is no point in them arguing all the time, and that it is the future that matters – and the baby.
| Mathew disturbs the touching scene |
“I love you so much!” he professes.
| He decides some of the Cash and Carry stuff . . . |
Dani tells Mathew to take out some boxes from the Cash and Carry,
| . . . would be useful for Vicky |
and when he does so, he also secretes some packets of food in his bag, for Vicky and Nicky.
| Someone gives tablets to Linda |
At Bryntirion, a mystery figure clad in black gives Linda a handful of tablets; she takes the glass of water and is very grateful. The figure makes a hasty exit, via the back door.
| "Hello doctor, I'm so pleased to see you" |
A few moments later, the front door opens and the doctor appears; Linda, looking very serene, greets him, “Hello, doctor, I’m so pleased to see you.”
| "Liv has always been fragile" |
At the Deri bar, Dani tells Mathew that she and Liv argued about her baby’s name and she feels terrible; “She’s always been fragile,” she says,
| "You have your own life to consider" |
but Mathew points out that she has her own life to consider, but regrets that he still does not have a place to live.
| Mathew is replacing the items when . . . |
On reflection, Mathew decides to replace the items he has stolen,
| . . . he is caught in the act |
but during the process of taking the packets out of his bag, Garry comes downstairs and catches him, naturally wanting to know what he is doing.
| "I know exactly what you did with those cars!" |
Mathew admits that he was going to take them, but had second thoughts and was putting them back; he says, “Not everyone is like you, taking advantage of people – I know exactly what you did with those cars!” Garry demands whether Mathew is threatening him.
| "I'll make sure you go down with me!" |
As Dani joins them, Garry makes his own threat; “If you say a word about the cars to anyone, I’ll make sure you go down with me! Get out – I don’t want to see you here again!”
| Mathew is dismissed (again) |
Although Mathew attempts to explain to Dani, he is given his marching orders from the Deri.
| As he leaves the Deri . . . |
As he walks into the street, he receives a text from Vicky,
| . . . Vicky advises that she has found a place |
triumphantly announcing, “I’ve found a place! No need for a bond!” and he looks very downhearted.
| "I would have given you anything you wanted" |
Mathew appears in the doorway of the Deri flat and startles Dani; she demands why he did it, as she would have given him anything he wanted.
| "Please give me my job back!" |
He begs for his job back, but she points out that Garry does not want him there any more. “You should have thought of how much you need the job before stealing!” she warns him,
| "How can we trust you now?" |
“How can we trust you now? You’d better go.”
| Mathew resorts to threats |
“Does Garry know about us?” he asks, “I could tell him – he cheated on you – why not tell him you cheated on him?
| "It's about time someone told him!" |
“It’s about time someone told him! Why shouldn’t I? I’ve got nothing to lose, if I’ve got no job.”
| Dani looks troubled |
He walks out, leaving Dani rather concerned.
| DJ is given the news |
DJ arrives home, only to be told that his mother is already dead; he cannot understand it,
| "We were talking about finding somewhere to live" |
as he was talking to her earlier, about finding somewhere to live.” Elgan informs him that she went into a coma shortly after he arrived,
| "She went peacefully" |
but she went peacefully and was not in pain. DJ is devastated;
| "Why didn't you wait for me, Mam?" |
“Why didn’t you wait for me, Mam?” he pleads.
| "Don't you think you were a bit rash?" |
“Don’t you think you were a bit rash, sacking Mathew?” Dani asks Garry, “He’s never done anything like that before – he must be really desperate.”
| "I will not tolerate that!" |
Garry reminds her that Mathew was threatening him, and he will not tolerate something like that. “It’s been really tough for him and Vicky recently,” she adds.
| "Anyone would think you fancied him!" |
Garry wonders why Dani always takes Mathew’s side, and has a soft spot for him. “Anyone would think you fancied him!”
| Then Mathew appears . . . |
Then they notice that Mathew has just crept in through the door, as he forgot his coat,
| . . . and is given his coat |
which Dani fetches for him. He apologises once more, and Garry again orders him to go.
| Vicky has been checking the flat on the internet |
Vicky is lounging on Sheryl’s sofa, and tells Mathew when he returns that the flat looks all right on the internet,
| "We can view it tonight" |
and she has said they would view it tonight. “I’ll check the buses!”
| Then Mathew reveals that he has been sacked |
“There’s no point,” Mathew informs her, “I’ve been sacked!”
| The silent mourners |
DJ, with Elgan and Diane, sits by his mother’s body;
| "Sleep peacefully, Mam" |
“Sleep peacefully, Mam,” he says, and kisses her.
