The bank want to see Colin
Britt is looking anxiously on a letter from the bank, notifying Colin;  “The sum of £147,258.43 disappeared from your account during one transaction on Thursday 26 October.”
. . . and Britt is at her wits' end
She is beside herself with worry.
Arwen has been sent home from school . . .
At Cysgod y Glyn, Arwen is not well, and sits quietly on the sofa;  Ffion tells Gethin that the doctor was very good with her but they should cancel the party.   He replies that it is rather late to do that now, but she says, “I don’t think going ahead with a birthday party is a good idea.”
. . . and she does not look her normal bubbly self
Then she tells Arwen, “Mam has to go now, but Gethin is going to stay with you.”
Sheryl tries to find out the special guest
In the shop, Eileen tells Sheryl that all the lights have arrived for this evening, but she will still not reveal the identity of the special guest.   Then Sheryl asks Jim;
Jim is not saying anything, either
“I’m not telling – I wouldn’t survive the night!” is his answer.   Eileen says that Jim has written a lovely speech.
"Do you know something that I should know?"
As Sheryl is leaving, she is stopped by Colin;  “Do you know something that I should know?   About Britt?   She’s acting very strangely.”
"Concentrate on the dancing, Col"
Sheryl advises at the best thing he can do is to concentrate on the dancing.
“That is the problem – I can’t concentrate on the dancing, knowing what I’m going to do afterwards,” he replies.
"You don't want to ask her in front of everyone"
Sheryl is not sure that it is a good idea to ask her tonight, not in front of everyone;
"You do know something!"
he is convinced that she does know something, but she insists that some people prefer to do these things in private.
Poor old Colin is being kept in the dark
When she goes, Colin is even more confused.
Eifion learns that the party has been cancelled
Eifion comes in from his farm work and is told by Cadno that Arwen’s birthday party has been cancelled, and that Gethin will not be able to help him in the vestry until later.
He dances with Cadno
He grabs her and begins dancing around the kitchen;  she points out that the potatoes are almost boiling.
“We deserve a night out – it would be fun,” suggests Eifion, “I’ll get Matthew to babysit – he owes me a favour.”
"But go and have a shower first!"
Cadno agrees, and tells him to go and have a shower, as he stinks.
Anita and DJ dance flamboyantly
At number 10, Anita and DJ are having another practice, and she urges him to remember to put his weight on his back foot when he does the double turn.
"Thanks for being so patient with me"
He is very grateful for her patience, and she commends him for working hard;  “We shall be fine,” she says, and wants the dress to be a surprise.   He is worried that the judges will be looking at all her sequins,
"They won't notice my fancy footwork if you're half naked!"
and will not notice his fancy footwork if she is half naked.
"My dress is very tasteful!"
She insists that her dress is very tasteful.
Cowboy Carl is still working on the vestry
Jim finds Carl up in the roof space of the vestry;  he is working on the fuse board.
Jim is very unimpressed with all the mess
“It’s a bit of a shambles up here,” Jim comments, and stresses that tonight is an important night.   Carl replies that he has been working hard, and will come back next week to clear everything up.
He has his doubts about Carl
Jim looks as if he is doubtful.
Some last-minute rehearsing
Later, we find that the vestry has been prepared and two of the dancers are doing some practice, with Colin and Sheryl watching them.   The villagers are starting to arrive.
"What time did he say he'd be here?"
Jim is becoming anxious;  “What time did he say he would be here?” he asks Eileen.
"Courtney would be proud of you"
She compliments him on being very smart, adding that Courtney would be very proud of him, and that he is very brave to do this
"It's hard to believe it's been a year"
“It’s hard to believe that it is a year since . . .” he begins, almost in tears, and she reminds him that they are having a night of fun, sparkle and glitter to remember her, because that is what Courtney would want.
Russell Grant arrives
Then their guest of honour, Russell Grant, arrives, and he says that he is really looking forward to this.   Eileen introduces him to Jim, Courtney’s father, and they leave him to get changed.
Colin is very wound up
Sheryl, in her stunning pink wig, comes to sit down with Gaynor, but Colin says that he is very nervous, as he has a lot to think about.
"The Tower Ballroom, Blackwood!"
When Iolo comes in, he remarks to Eifion, “It’s just like the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool – or Blackwood!”
The doctor comes in
Elgan arrives;  he and Gaynor look at each other.
Jim introduces their special guest . . .
Then Jim appears and asks them to welcome their special guest for the evening, Mr Russell Grant.
. . . who is applauded
He is greeted by a round of applause,
Anita and DJ make their entrance
then Anita and DJ walk in.
"Is that a parrot on Anita's head?"
Eifion wonders if that is a parrot on Anita’s head.
Eileen thanks them all for coming, and for contributing to Children in Need;  then she invites Jim to say a few words.
Jim is rather emotional as he speaks
He is rather hesitant as she remarks that they are here for a night of fun, and to remember Courtney.
"A girl who was always happy, always laughing"
“Tonight was Eileen’s idea – a night to remember a girl who was always happy, always laughing.”
Ricky takes over
His emotions get the better of him, so Ricky steps forward to take over.
"I was forced to watch hours and hours of dancing"
“I don’t know much about dancing, but Courtney was completely obsessed with it – so I was forced to watch hours and hours of it with her – and you were her favourite,” he says, pointing to Russell Grant.   “I know that Courtney would have loved to be here with us tonight –
"I would have loved to have her here – and our baby"
“and I would have loved to have her here with us – with our baby – so that we could dance.   So enjoy tonight – enjoy it for Courtney.”
Gethin hears that Arwen is feeling better
Gethin has finished work at the garage and returns home, where Arwen is now much better.
"Gethin?"
Then Ffion says, “Gethin?   Do you think, because Arwen is feeling so much better, and because she was so disappointed when the party was cancelled, do you think we could take her to see the dancing in the vestry tonight?”
Arwen is wearing her party dress
She removes Arwen’s dressing gown, to reveal a party dress underneath;
"Oh, I really don't know about that!"
Gethin maintains that he really does not know, but then turns
"Of course our little Cinderella can go to the dance"
and says, “Of course our little Cinderella can go to the dance!
"We don't want the ugly sister there too, do we?"
“Mam had better go and get changed – we don’t want the ugly sister there too, do we?”
Cwm Dancing gets under way
In the vestry, the first couple are dancing around the room.
Elgan judges their performance quite good
Elgan tells Garry that they did a pretty good job, and reveals that he and Sophia used to dance years ago.
"Next are Anita and DJ"
Then Eileen announces that the next couple are Anita and DJ.
"I won't be able to see your feet"
DJ protests that he will not be able to see Anita’s feet with that dress, but she replies that he is not supposed to be looking at her feet.
Ffion, Gethin and Arwen arrive
Ffion and Gethin come in with Arwen, they sit down with Garry.
Anita and DJ look as if they mean business . . .
Anita and DJ begin their routine, accompanied by music from Carmen,
. . . until there is a slight hiccup
but after a few seconds, Anita stumbles and collapses to the floor in pain, much to the consternation of all the onlookers.
Anita quickly receives help . . .
The doctor rushes to her aid,
. . . but Gethin finds it comical
but Gethin seems to find the incident amusing.   Anita is hobbling, and is helped to the door.
"Well, the show must go on"
Eileen says that, despite the accident, the show must go on, and invites Nia and Gwyn from Llanarthur to the floor, a white-haired couple.
"I've noticed one thing, Gaynor . . ."
Ffion remarks to Gaynor that it is noticeable that she has not been able to keep her eyes off Elgan.
". . . you can't keep your eyes off Elgan!"
“It’s so obvious that you’re looking at him.”
"You should be checked at the hospital"
Anita, accompanied by DJ, arrives back at number 10, and tells DJ to stop fussing about taking her to hospital;
"It's my self-respect that needs a plaster!"
“It’s my self-respect that needs a plaster, not my foot!”   He admits he forgot to shift his weight on that reverse turn;  “Yes – and now I’ve twisted my ankle!” Anita moans, “In front of everyone – and in front of Russell Grant as well!
"The brandy is over there"
“Get me a small brandy.”
"You nearly did the splits"
DJ grabs mugs from the cupboard, and Anita points out that he nearly did the splits, but he says he was trying to stop her falling.   “I think Courtney would have found it hilarious,” Anita comments.
"I have got glasses, you know"
On being handed the mug, she comments, “I have got glasses, you know.”
"But Britt's not here!"
Now that it is their turn to perform, Sheryl urges Colin to concentrate, but he is very worried because Britt has not arrived.
Russell Grant has to take his leave
Then Eileen announces that unfortunately, Russell has to leave now, but the assembled multitude give him a round of applause.
"I'm not starting until she gets here"
Colin is reluctant to start until Britt arrives, but Sheryl drags him forward,
Britt appears, in the nick of time . . .
and at that moment, Britt appears in the doorway;
. . . and they begin their cavorting . . .
and they begin their routine.
. . . which cracks Garry up
Garry finds the sight quite bizarre.
The lights start flickering
Then the lights start flickering, finally going out altogether;
Jim is confident he can sort this out
Jim assures them that there is no need to worry, and that he will sort out the problem.   “The lights have fused, that’s all – the fuse box is up in the roof, and I’ll go up there now.
"Whatever you do, don't move!"
Whatever you do, don’t move, in case you fall over something.   Gethin goes with him, and tells Ffion to go and get Arwen from the toilet.   Garry will go to fetch some lights from the Deri.
They get up into the roof . . .
By the light of a small torch, Jim makes his way across the roof space,
. . . where there is no emergency lighting
which is in a terrible mess, and finds that there is no emergency light up there.
"Can I smell burning?"
“Is it my imagination, or can I smell burning?” Jim asks.
Colin takers matters into his own hands
Downstairs, Colin says that he cannot stand this any more, then grabs one of Garry’s lights, and Britt.
"Gather round, everyone!"
In the middle of the dance floor, he invites everyone to gather round.   “There’s something I want to share with you all,” he tells them,
Colin sinks to one knee
getting down on one knee, and, much to Britt’s embarrassment,
"Will you marry me?"
says, “Will you marry me?”   There is a collective sigh, and some people smile,
But answer comes there none
but Britt remains stony-faced.
They gingerly approach the fuse board
Up above, Jim tells Gethin, “I bet Cowboy Carl hasn’t wired the place properly!” and is warned to mind where he is stepping.
An ominous crack appears in the vestry ceiling
A crack suddenly appears in the plasterboard ceiling,
Jim locates the cause of the problem
but Jim has reached the fuse box, and finds a disconnected cable.
"I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Britt!"
“I love you, Britt!” exclaims Colin, “And I want to spend the rest of my life with you – please, what do you say?”
"If you don't tell him, I shall have to!"
Garry tells Britt that she cannot do this to him, then says, “Sorry, Col, I don’t want to spoil your big moment, but, if you don’t tell him, I’ll have to!”
Colin wonders what earth is going on
Colin is looking very confused.
There is a cheer when the lights come back on
Jim resets the circuit breaker and the lights are restored;  there is a cheer from downstairs, but as the pair make their way back to the stairs, Jim trips over a loose cable.
Suddenly, catastrophe strikes
The ceiling, and the two of them, fall into the gathering below, then all is silent, except for some coughing,
A scene of darkness and destruction
as the camera scans several scarcely moving bodies under the debris,
A teddy bear and a hand can just be seen
particularly a protruding hand near a teddy bear.
