15 November 2017

"Look what I found at the side of the road!"
Dai walks into Bryntirion, shouting, “Hannah, look what I found at the side of the road!”
Hannah is pleased to see her Gran back home, and Dai points out that Chester is still here, of course;
Dai is no more complimentary about Chester
“He can’t remember where his house is!”   Chester hugs Diane to welcome her back.
"I can't believe what's been happening!"
“I can’t believe what’s been happening while I was away!” Diane exclaims;  Hannah tells her that Gaynor Llywelyn is still in a coma, and Chester mentions Jim and Gethin being off work.   Hannah is preparing lunch for them,
She has brought home a bottle of champagne
and Diane produces a bottle of champagne from Spain, as she wants to celebrate.
"What have we got to celebrate?"
“We’ve lost a house in Spain – what have we got to celebrate?” moans Dai, but Diane stresses that as well as selling a house in Spain, they now have no more debts.   They are also all alive and well, and that is reason enough to celebrate.
"It's still a crime!"
Colin is speaking on the phone;  “It is still stealing, isn’t it?   It’s still a crime!”
"It's impossible to know who did it"
Then he tells Britt, “According to the police, a lot of these companies operate from foreign countries – it’s impossible to know who did it.   They told me to try the bank again.”
"They will never give you the money back"
Britt says that they will never give him the money back, but he complains, “They do everything for these multinational companies –
"But if you're just a normal bloke from Lampeter . . ."
“but if you’re just a normal bloke from Lampeter . . . Do you know what?   It would have been safer if I put the whole lot in a shoebox under the bed.”
Dai likes it, whatever it is
Dai is enjoying his meal, but wonders exactly what it is;
"It's vegan food"
Hannah enlightens him, “It’s chick peas – vegan food.   No meat, no fish and no dairy.   He presumes that people cannot live on stuff like that for long,
"A vegan diet can be very healthy"
but she points out that as long as you get the balance right, a vegan diet can be healthy.
Diane is very impressed with the taste of this meal;  Hannah is determined to make more of this kind of food from now on.
Chester looks surprised
“I’ve always wanted to do it and I’m going to try going vegan.”
"Couples who eat together, stick together"
Dai can see that Chester is not very happy;  “You know what they say, don’t you?   Couples who eat together, stick together!   “I don’t see you swapping sausage, beans and chips for chick peas and lentils.
"A few lentils would do you good!"
Diane grumbles that it would do Dai good to eat a few lentils, instead of all those sausages and pies.
Hannah does not want to change Chester's diet
Hannah does not want Chester to change his diet, as this is something for her,
"This is how it starts"
but Dai gleefully states, “This is how it starts – eating different things, different interests, not liking the same things.”   Chester considers that he has a point, and that it is important that couples should share interests.
"I have always felt a bit odd, eating animals"
He thinks that he should be vegan as well, much to Hannah’s surprise.   “I have always felt a bit odd eating animals,” he says, “I’m going to be a vegan.   I’m going to do this because I want to.”
"There has been no change"
In the Deri, Garry asks Colin about Gaynor, and is told that there has been no change;
"Britt may have saved Gaynor's life"
“Listen Col, if it wasn’t for Britt, Gaynor could have died before the ambulance arrived – she’s a good person – don’t punish her for this business with the money.
"She tried everything to get the money back"
“She tried everything to get it back.”
Colin replies that he is not trying to punish her, but is just upset;
"But she turned to you, and not me"
“To be honest, I’m angry that she turned to you and not me.”
Garry gets Elgan's whisky
Elgan comes in and orders a pint and a whisky;
The doctor alleges he was concussed
Colin asks him if he is feeling better after the vestry.   The doctor replies that he had concussion, and did not know where he was, to be honest, but is now feeling better.   Garry is puzzled by what he says.
"Not if you eat chip butties all the time"
Diane wonders if being vegan helps one to lose weight, and Dai comments, “Not if you eat chip butties all the time!”   Hannah assures her that she can lose weight, but like every diet, you have to eat carefully and get the balance right.
Diane remembers reading that Beyoncé said she lost two stone on a vegan diet;
"A world of difference between you and Beyoncé"
Dai points out that there is a world of difference between her and Beyoncé.   “She’s got a chef and personal trainer – and she lives in LA.   You would never cope with a plate of veg while you’re freezing in APD!”
"Would it threaten all those sausage rolls?"
She taunts him, “If I were vegan, would it threaten all those sausage rolls you’ve got in the fridge?”   He maintains that she has as much chance of turning vegan, as running up Everest.   To start with, she would need a bit of self-discipline.
"Right – I will be vegan!"
She decides to accept the challenge and insists that she will be vegan from now on.
"What was that about 'couples who eat together'?"
Chester reminds Dai of what he said;  “Couples who eat together . . .” and Dai is virtually forced to agree that from now on they will all be vegans.
Dai does not want to lose his Cheddar or Caerphilly
Diane immediately removes the Cheddar and Caerphilly cheeses from the fridge, against Dai’s will,
"Where do you think cheese comes from?   Off trees?"
and will take them to the community fridge.   Chester does not look particularly happy about his decision.
"Same again, Garry"
Elgan asks Garry for the same again;  the reply is, “I know I am the landlord, and I want people to spend money on drinks,
"Should you be drinking?"
“but do you really think you should be drinking?   This business with the concussion – I saw you in the vestry – you didn’t have a mark on you.   You were on your feet.
"Drinking too much and telling lies"
“What I see is a man who’s drinking too much and telling lies – and this man happens to be a GP.
"I'm thinking about reporting you"
“This is not a malicious threat, but for your own sake, and for the sake of your patients, I’m thinking about reporting you to the health board.”
"Do what you think is best!"
“Yes, fine, you do what you think is best!” says the doctor, and leaves the pub, much to Garry’s consternation.
Elgan looks up at the vestry . . .
Outside, Elgan looks across at the vestry, and hears in his mind the shouts and groans from the other day;
. . . hears voices in his head . . .
he looks troubled and walks towards the garage, where he appears to be in pain
. . . and takes it out on the door
and punches the door next to him.
Hannah is excited about fresh kale
In the shop, Hannah is excited to find fresh kale, and Colin tells her they grow a lot of it at Penrhewl.
"I didn't get as much as I hoped"
Diane reports that the price she received for the villa was not as high as she had hoped, but at least they can clear their debts now.   “Maybe you should consider buying a house abroad – you can get some beautiful ones quite cheaply these days,” she tells Colin.
"I haven't got a penny to my name!"
“Unfortunately, I haven’t got a penny to my name,” he sadly replies, “Britt has lost every penny of it.   She was scammed on the Internet –
"I just can't forgive her"
“I know it wasn’t her fault, but I just can’t forgive her.”
The doctor is back, wanting a private word . . .
Elgan returns to the Deri, and wants a word in private with Garry;
. . . and heads upstairs
they both go up to the flat.
"If she had told me earlier"
“Maybe I’m being unfair, but if she told me earlier, I might have been able to do something about it,” Colin continues, and Diane can understand how she must have felt.
"Why was that money so important to you?"
“Why was that money so important to you?” demands Hannah, and he explains he has never had money like that before.   It was nice to know he had it in reserve.
"Is it worth throwing everything away?"
She goes on, “Is it worth throwing everything away just because you liked the feeling of having money in reserve?”
"You know that I gave Chester a decent sum"
Colin points out there were things which he wanted to do, like treating Britt, helping the kids;  “You know that I gave Chester a decent sum.”   Diane points out that he has more important things than money.   He acknowledges this,
"How could Britt have been so careless?"
but wonders, “How could Britt have been so careless?   If she’d tried a little bit harder to . . .”
"You have no idea how hard that family has tried!"
Hannah interrupts him;  “You have no idea how hard that family has tried!   Chester gambled every penny he had, to try and give you that money back – I wasn’t supposed to say anything.   He wanted to try and sort it out his own way.”
Colin says that was supposed to be for his education;
"He thinks the world of you!"
“But he must feel that other things are more important!” she exclaims, “He thinks the world of you – he was only trying to help.   All the money in the world can’t buy that kind of loyalty!”
Colin realises she may have a point
This makes Colin think.
"Have you ever been in a car accident?"
Upstairs in the Deri, Elgan asks if Garry has ever been in a car accident.   “It’s like they say – everything slows right down – you notice the most insignificant things in those moments, but what they don’t tell you is how cruel and hard it is.
"I was with two friends . . ."
“I was with two friends and we were on our way to some conference somewhere, I was driving, Jake was at my side and Nick was on the back seat.
Garry listens intently
“We were arguing about how to make the perfect lasagne.
"This car came out of nowhere"
“This car came out of nowhere on the wrong side of the road.   I remember shouting – and my voice sounded pathetic somehow.   The car was thrown up into the air and we were spinning – I thought we’d never stop.
"There was nothing I could do"
“Both of them were dead – there was nothing I could do.”
"I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do anything there"
Garry comes over and sits at the table with him, as Elgan continues, “So in the vestry, when I saw the mess and everyone, everything, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do anything for them either.
"It was fear!"
So I ran away – I didn’t hit my head or have concussion – it was fear!”
"You see patients every day"
Garry remarks that he sees patients every day,
"But that is in a controlled environment"
but Elgan says that is in a controlled environment and is completely different.
Elgan leaves again
Having explained himself, the doctor leaves.
"Hannah wasn't supposed to tell you"
Chester is in the café, and receives an alert from Hannah;  he sees Colin approaching.   “Hannah wasn’t supposed to tell you,” he says.
"Stop shutting me out of things!"
Colin points out that the money was supposed to be for him, and urges him, “Stop shutting me out of things!”
"You're the best thing that has happened to Mam"
Chester replies that he was afraid Colin would not want to be part of their family any more, and assures Colin that he is the best thing that has happened to Mam – and them – for years.   “I was worried that the whole business would spoil everything.”
"I have something more valuable than money"
Colin replies that of course it has not spoilt everything, and he appreciates he has something a lot more valuable than money here.
"So you're not going to leave us, then?"
“So you’re not going to leave us, then?” Chester asks.
"The exact opposite, boy!"
“The exact opposite!” Colin replies.
Elgan is trying to sleep in an armchair at home;
Elgan has nightmares . . .
he suddenly wakes, shouting, “Jake!   Jake!”
. . . and awakens in a panic
then realises where he is.
"Sorry I've been so unreasonable"
Colin stands in front of Britt, and tells her that he is sorry for giving her a hard time and being unreasonable.
"I think you've been very reasonable, considering"
“Unreasonable?   I’ve lost almost £150,000 – I think you’ve been very reasonable, considering,” she answers.
"What we have is something beyond price"
He goes on to tell her that what they have is something that he cannot put a price on – and he does not want to lose that because of money.
"So, will you please be my wife?"
“So, will you please be my wife?” he asks, holding up the ring.
"Colin, you're such a good man"
“Colin, you’re such a good man, and you’ve got such a big heart!” she replies, “That’s why I have to say no.   You deserve a lot better than me.”
"You're the most important thing that has happened to me"
He insists that she is the most important thing that has ever happened in his life;
"I want to spend the rest of my life with you"
he is getting on and wants to the spend the rest of his life with her.
"I will always know what I did to you"
She protests that she will always know what she did to him, but he exclaims, “You did nothing wrong – those hackers stole the money, not you!”
Britt insists she should have done something earlier – and the way she handled it was wrong;
"Forget about that"
“Forget about that now,” he pleads, “It’s not important – what’s important is you and me – the children, the future.
"Don't you love me any more?"
“Don’t you love me any more?”
Her reply is that of course she does love him, so he begs her to marry him, and make him the happiest man in the world,
"No – sorry!"
but she whispers, “No – sorry!”
