| "You haven't touched your breakfast" |
Kath complains that Non has not touched her breakfast, after she made it specially; Vicky decides that she will have her bacon.
| "It's my first lesson today" |
Non wants everything to be all right, as she has to do her first lesson today and she must not be late.
After she has gone, Kath tells Vicky that she could have shown a bit of interest;
| "She isn't the only one who deserves some TLC" |
“Really?” Vicky replies, “She isn’t the only one who deserves some TLC.” Kath says that all this sulking is getting on her nerves.
| An official letter awaits Mathew . . . |
At Penrhewl, Mathew finds on the kitchen table, together with a message from Cadno telling him to do the washing-up, a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions.
| . . . and it is not good news |
He is very angry when he reads the letter,
| He grabs his phone |
and immediately grabs his phone.
| Dai studies the ketchup . . . |
In the shop, Dai is looking at the ingredients of a bottle of ketchup; the doctor tells him that it is better for him than mayonnaise,
| . . . then gets a bottle of brown sauce as well |
so he decides to have a bottle of brown sauce as well.
| "I'm looking forward to this evening" |
Gaynor comes in, looking forward to their meal this evening; of course, Dai is listening in.
Elgan leaves for the surgery, and Gaynor picks up a magazine.
| "Date tonight, is it?" |
“Date tonight, is it?” enquires Dai,
| "That is none of your business, Dai!" |
and she tells him that it is none of his business, before hurrying off.
| Mark is off his food |
At Maes-y-Deri, Mark has refused bacon and eggs, preferring to eat toast, and tells his mother that he did not sleep much.
| "The bathroom tap is dripping" |
She advises him that they need a new washer in the bathroom, as the tap is dripping.
He wonders how Non will get on at school today, and Kath is confident that Ricky will look after her.
| Mark could not face teaching |
He remarks, “I couldn’t do it, standing in front of a classroom of schoolkids,” but she replies that is why Non is special.
| "Who would have thought it – a teacher in the family!" |
“Who would have thought it – a teacher in the family!” she says, as Vicky walks back in; she is going out to meet some of the other mothers.
| "Someone's reported me to the DSS!" |
Mathew suddenly rushes in through the back door; “You’re not going to believe this – someone’s reported me to the DSS for working with Carl!
| "Who would do that?" |
“Who would do that? I’m on my way there now – what are we going to do?”
| Gaynor introduces the new student teacher |
At school, Gaynor introduces Miss Mererid to year 12,
| Ricky looks embarrassed |
and Ricky looks rather embarrassed. “She is going to be teaching the class about Nazi Germany this morning –
| They seem well-behaved at the moment |
“she is very knowledgeable on the subject, so make the most of this opportunity,” Gaynor tells them, then informs Non that they are pretty sensible on the whole.
| Various ringtones begin sounding |
“We are going to start by looking at interpretations of Adolf Hitler's leadership style,” Non begins, but then there is a strange klaxon-like ring tone, followed by several other miscellaneous tunes.
| "Turn off those phones, year 12!" |
Non is becoming uneasy, and the pupils smirk at each other.
| "Don't start something you can't finish" |
Mark calls at APD to get tap washers, and Dai advises him not to start anything that he cannot do;
| "We don't want another disaster in your bathroom!" |
“We don’t want another disaster in your bathroom!” When told that Vicky has been complaining about the dripping tap,
| "Youngsters want everything done for them" |
Dai goes on, “Youngsters these days expect everyone to do things for them,” but Mark does not fancy being young again, and trying to find his way in this world.
“If you ask me, young people expect everything to land in their laps,” continues Dai;
| "Someone's reported Mathew for moonlighting" |
Mark says that someone has reported Mathew for moonlighting, and he could lose all his money, with which he was helping Vicky.
| "Mathew got what he deserved!" |
Dai asks him, “How would you like it if someone came to the village and started delivering letters without any kind of training? You wouldn’t like that, would you? And what about if people found out this person wasn’t to be trusted? Mathew got what he deserved! Now, are you going to pay for those washers?”
| Mark is suffering from skin irritation |
Mark, who has been scratching his arm, realises that it was Dai who reported Mathew,
| "That's a bit over the top, Dai!" |
and says that is a bit over the top. Dai maintains that he sympathises with Mathew,
| "Cowboys like Carl need to be stopped!" |
but cowboys like Carl need to be stopped; then he demands his £1.70.
| Kath finds Vicky selling something . . . |
In the alley by the shop, Kath comes across Vicky, who says she is selling Nicky’s old clothes to Janet, but she thinks they are too small.
| . . . in surprisingly good condition |
Kath remarks that they are in good condition considering how old they are,
| "I've got to dash, Kath" |
but Vicky is in a hurry to go. Kath is very suspicious.
| Non's lesson does not seem to be very riveting . . . |
Year 12 do not appear to be taking much interest in Non’s lesson;
| . . . judging by this comment |
she asks, “Who thinks that the growth of Nazism was inevitable?” but receives no reply.
| Even Ricky will not answer her question |
“Do you think that Hitler’s leadership style was extreme? Ricky?” but he says nothing.
| Then a chorus of 'Achtung! Achtung!' rings out |
As soon as Non turns to the whiteboard, the class begin banging on the desks and repeatedly shouting, “Achtung! Achtung!”
She is unable to bring them to order,
| The stentorian voice of the head teacher restores order |
but, attracted by the noise, Gaynor appears in the doorway and shouts, “Year 12 – what is going on here?” Non runs from the classroom,
| Ricky looks rather ashamed |
and Ricky looks rather ashamed.
| Vicky gets a shock |
Vicky returns home and is looking in her bag when Kath startles her; she says that Nicky is upstairs, having a nap.
| "Did you find someone to buy Nicky's clothes?" |
“Did you find someone to buy Nicky’s clothes?” she asks, “Right, I will give you a chance to be honest now –
| "We both know they're not Nicky's clothes!" |
“we both know they’re not Nicky’s clothes – are you going to tell me where you got them? Or do I have to get Debbie and Mark on the case too?”
| "You don't understand" |
Vicky replies that she does not understand,
| "Oh yes I do – you stole them!" |
but Kath maintains that she understands very well that Vicky stole them.
| "I found them in the café" |
She whines, “I found them in the café, and it was only afterwards I heard they were Dani’s. I took them because I’m skint!”
| "I could have helped you" |
Kath demands why Vicky did not ask her, as she could have helped.
| "Everyone thinks I'm useless!" |
“Everyone here already thinks I’m useless, especially Mam! I don’t want anyone to find out – please, Kath!”
| Kath has a proposition for her |
Kath agrees that she will not say anything, but Vicky has to tell Dani what she has done and give the clothes back.
| "That's the deal, and it's up to you!" |
“That is the deal, and it’s up to you! Now go upstairs to your little boy – he’s missed you all day.”
| Mark has gone off his beer |
In the Deri, Mark has a soft drink, as he does not fancy a beer; he tells Mathew, “About this DSS Business . . .”
| "Loads of people do it – and don't get caught" |
but Mathew interrupts him to bewail the fact that loads of people do it – and get away with it – but he does it only once.
| "Who would do this to me?" |
He wonders who would do this to him, but then his phone rings.
| Elgan reserves a table for later |
Elgan comes in and asks Dan, the barman, if he can reserve the table in the corner for a meeting at seven this evening. “Important date, is it!” enquires Mark,
| "No, it's just a meeting" |
but the doctor points out that it is just a meeting.
| "I have to apologise to you!" |
Gaynor is at home, preparing to go out, when there is a knock at the door, and Non rushes in, saying, “Sorry, but I’m so embarrassed about this morning! I have to apologise to you – I had prepared – I was nervous – did I do anything wrong?”
| "Well, I was about to go to a meeting" |
Gaynor starts to mention she was about to go out,
| "Am I wasting my time trying to be a teacher?" |
but Non is so insistent, “Please, tell me, Mrs Llywelyn, am I wasting my time trying to be a teacher?”
| "You'd better sit down" |
Gaynor tells her to sit down and she will make a cup of tea.
| "What I was going to say is . . ." |
Mark is about to resume what he was saying to Mathew,
| "I'm trying to sympathise with you here" |
when Dai comes in and offers to buy Mathew a drink; “Come on, I’m trying to sympathise with you here,” he says,
| "I'm sure Mark's explained why I did what I did" |
“I’m sure Mark’s explained why I did what I did. I know you’re angry, but when you sit down and think about it, you’ll see that what I did was right.”
| "So you did it!" |
Mathew looks at him and exclaims, “So you did it!” and Mark confirms that was what he had been trying to say. Mathew roars, “I don’t believe this!
| "Come on, what were the reasons?" |
“Come on then, what were the reasons? Come on, tell me!”
| "Working without any training . . ." |
“Well, working without any training to start with,” replies Dai, “No contract, no insurance. What if you had an accident? I was trying to get at Carl,”
| "I'm the one who's getting the flak!" |
but Mathew reminds him that he is the one who is getting the flak.
“I could go to court – I could lose my benefits for three years!” he shouts, but Dai doubts that it will come to that. “Do you know what it’s like to live with no money? Not a penny? Not everyone has a villa in Spain they can sell when things are tight.”
| The doctor is alarmed by the sudden noise . . . |
He furiously jumps up and knocks his stool over; the noise startles Elgan,
| . . . and looks very agitated |
who looks upset. Mathew snarls at Dai, “You make me sick!” and walks out.
| He certainly has a problem with his nerves |
The doctor appears very nervous.
| Gaynor is clock-watching . . . |
Gaynor is looking at the clock,
| . . . as Non goes on |
as Non explains, “I understand that discipline is needed, but doesn’t too much limit pupils’ imagination?” Gaynor appreciates this is her first lesson and she knows how much it means to Non.
| "I'm willing to talk about this tomorrow" |
She is more than willing to talk about it tomorrow, and Non is very grateful. “But now I have to go – I have an important meeting – we’ll talk tomorrow.”
| "I thought she'd never go!" |
Gaynor picks up her coat and bag and hurries off to the Deri.
| "It was Dai – he shopped me!" |
Again, Mathew arrives at Maes-y-Deri, and announces, “It was Dai – he shopped me! He told me, and went on about insurance and what if I had an accident!”
| "Moonlighting and stealing are not the answer" |
Kath hopes that both of them learn a lesson from this; “Moonlighting and stealing are not the answer.
| Vicky glares at Kath |
Vicky has been stealing Dani’s baby clothes,”
| This comes as news to Mathew |
then she realises that Mathew did not know.
| "It wasn't quite stealing" |
Vicky insists that it was not quite stealing; “She left the bag in the café, and I took it – but I didn’t know it was Dani’s bag.”
| "You stole from Dani?" |
Mathew turns around and promptly leaves again.
| "I've lost everything now!" |
Vicky laments, “I’ve lost everything now – my money, my self-respect and my boyfriend!”
| "I'm terribly sorry I'm late" |
Gaynor arrives at the Deri, apologising for her lateness; “Sometimes it’s impossible to leave the school at the end of the day,” she complains. Elgan says that he feels the same about the surgery sometimes.
| "So you're the important meeting" |
As they sit down, Mark ambles across and comments, “So you’re the important meeting,” then he apologises to Elgan, “Sorry if Mathew gave you a shock earlier.”
| "I'm very proud of Non" |
He asks how Non is doing, stressing that he is very proud of her as she is working so hard, and that her Dad would be over the moon.
| "We want to order our dinner, Mark" |
Gaynor tries to get rid of him, and he goes, saying, “Enjoy your date!”
| Elgan does not seem too bright |
Elgan looks less than happy,
| "Are you angry because I was late?" |
and Gaynor thinks he is angry that she was late, but he insists that this is not the case,
| "No – let's order our meal" |
and is anxious for them to order their meal.
| Another sign of that skin trouble again |
When Mark arrives home, once again scratching his wrist, he is told that Debbie is doing a stock-take in the café, Gran is in the shower and Vicky is with Nicky.
| Non does not want to talk about anything |
Non does not want to talk, but is going upstairs to do some work.
| "How did it go, then, Ricky?" |
Mark asks Ricky how it went today,
| "One of the worst teachers I've ever seen!" |
and is surprised when Ricky answers, “I don’t want to be horrible but Non’s one of the worst teachers I’ve ever seen!”
| "That was just what I needed" |
At the end of their meal, Gaynor says it was just what she needed after today and thanks him; she suggests that they will have to do it again,
| Elgan is looking forward to Cwm Dancing |
and wonders, “Are you going to that Cwm Dancing thing on Friday?” He says that he is looking forward to it.
| Gaynor is becoming amorous . . . |
Putting her hands on his, she tells him she has enjoyed this evening, and he, rather half-heartedly, thanks her for a lovely evening, rather pointedly withdrawing his hands.
| . . . and invites him to Llwyncelyn for a coffee |
She finds this somewhat concerning, but asks if he wants to come back to Llwyncelyn for a coffee.
“I’d better not, as it is a school night,” he replies,
| "Good night, Gaynor" |
and then, after a pause, he wishes her good night and leaves the Deri,
| Gaynor is disappointed |
looking quite uncomfortable.
