28 November 2017

"Cwmderi's stand-up comedian!"
When Non comes into the café, Debbie greets her as, “Cwmderi’s stand-up comedian!   You should be on the Royal Variety, not in front of a class!”   Mark urges her to leave Non alone, and says says it was nice to see her enjoying herself at the party.
"Where are you going, Mark?"
Then Debbie tells him he had better go or he will be late;  “I’m going to the hospital to get the result of the test I had last week,
"They'll throw antibiotics at me"
“but I know what they’re going to say – that it’s just a urine infection, and they’ll throw antibiotics at me.”   He drinks up his tea and leaves.
There is a stony silence in the flat
At the chip shop flat, Britt and Colin are not speaking to each other, and Colin looks very displeased as he bites into his toast.
Britt wants to say something
Then he puts it down and goes off to the bedroom,
"Colin – oh, he's gone!"
just as Britt turns round and is about to say something to him.
"There are things we need to discuss"
At the hospital, the doctor is eager to discuss the results of Mark’s test;  he anticipates bad news.   “There are things that we need to consider,” she continues, but he just wants it straight.   “Yes, it’s bad news – the kidney is failing.”
"I knew something was seriously wrong"
Mark replies that he knew there was something seriously wrong,
"Your kidney is dying"
and is told that his kidney is dying.
Another of Colin's many talents – onion juggling
Outside the chippy, Britt can hear Colin laughing and joking with Llinos, even juggling with onions, which makes her smile.
"He's a character!"

Llinos remarks that he is a character.
Mark is shown the scan
Mark is shown his scan, and the doctor points out that kidney could last for months, or weeks.   “It’s difficult to predict what will happen, but as you know,
"There are options"
“there are options – living donor, non-living donor and dialysis.”
"I couldn't face dialysis every day"
Mark is not sure that he could face dialysis every day, even though the doctor points out that thousands of people do it and live for years.   He concludes that the kidney has worked well until now,
"Another transplant should work"
so there is every chance that another transplant would work.
The doctor informs him that there is still a long waiting list,
"A family member might be a match"
and that the first step would be to see if a family member was a match.   “I’ve already done that, and I don’t want to put any of them through that again,” he says.
Colin is downhearted
Colin walks dejectedly into the Deri, and asks Garry if he has spoken to Britt today;
"Could you have a word with her?"
“I was wondering if you could have a word with her.”
"I don't want to interfere, Col"
Garry  does not want to interfere any further, but Colin goes on, “The problem is, we’re not talking to each other.”   Garry is confident that his sister will come round.
"She's refused to marry me again!"
“She’s refused to marry me again!” Colin complains, but Garry says that her head is all over the place.   “You’re telling me!   I don’t know where I stand – the atmosphere in that flat is terrible!   It was one mistake, she won’t let it go!”
"It was nothing – she didn't kiss him!"
Garry misunderstands and protests, “It was nothing – she didn’t kiss him!”   Colin wants to know who he is talking about, but Garry insists, “Nobody – just forget about it!”
"My partner's been kissing some bloke?"
“Whoa, now!   My partner’s been kissing some bloke!” rages Colin, and despite Garry’s protestation that they did not kiss, he goes on, “She obviously likes him – who is he?”
He rushes from the Deri
and he rushes out of the pub.
"My kidney's dying, Deb"
Mark returns to the café, and tells Debbie that his kidney is packing up;  “It’s dying – we knew this could happen if there was sepsis.   She said that a transplant would be the best option – find out if someone in the family was a match again, but I don’t want to put you all through that.”
"Are you going to curl up and die?"
“What are you going to do, then?   Curl up and die?” demands Debbie,
"Perhaps that is what's meant to happen"
and he replies that this is perhaps the way things are supposed to be.   “What would Ricky say if he heard you say things like that?” she exclaims,
"We're going to sort this out"
“Don’t you worry about a thing – we’re going to sort this out, do you understand?”
Colin looks no less troubled
Colin stands miserably in the flat when Britt walks in and says she wants to talk to him;
"I'm sure I've made a mistake"
“I think I’ve made a mistake – no, I’m sure I’ve made a mistake, and I’ve changed my mind – about getting married – I do want to marry you.”
"I know about the kiss"
He appears disappointed and announces, “I know about the kiss – don’t try and deny it – I know!”
"I didn't kiss him, Col!"
She realises that Garry has been talking to him;  she says that it was Siôn, and that she did not kiss him, neither is it a big deal.
"It's easy to rekindle a fire on an old hearth"
“It’s easy to rekindle a fire on an old hearth,” quotes Colin,
"I just wanted to talk to someone sensible"
but she shouts that she just wanted to talk to someone sensible;
"And get some comfort?"
“And get some comfort?” he enquires.   Once again she is adamant that nothing happened, but says Siôn did help her to see things more clearly;  that is why she is here now.
She pleads that she wants to be with Colin,
"I'm not sure I believe you"
but he replies, “I’m sorry, Britt, I’d like to be able to say yes, but I’m not sure I believe you.   From where I’m standing, things seem to be getting worse instead of better.
The words that Britt did not want to hear
“I think it would be best if we both went our separate ways.”
The Jones' family meeting
The Joneses hold a family meeting;
"Mark needs help – and quickly"
“We all know why we’re here,” says Debbie, “Mark needs help – and quickly.”   Kath asks if Stacey has been told;  “She doesn’t have a spare kidney to give,” replies Debbie,
"I'll tell Stacey later"
and Mark says he will tell her later.
“I’m definitely going to do the test to see if I’m a match,” Debbie continues;  Kath says that they know from the last time that she is not.   “What about you, Non?” Debbie asks,
"I was born with only one kidney"
but she says that she cannot, as she has only one kidney, and was born like that.
"If you're taking the test, I will too"
Vicky decides that if her mother is taking the test, she will do so too.
“I’m not getting my hopes up,” Mark tells them,
"It will be all right"
and again Debbie insists that it will be all right.
Garry suffers a tirade from his sister
Britt has gone to see Garry, and is ranting at him, “I thought you had more sense than that!
"Everything is wrong!"
“To be honest, everything is wrong!” Garry protests that he was not the one who kissed Siôn,
"I didn't kiss him – right?"
and this causes another outburst, “I didn’t kiss him – right?”
Garry pleads with her to calm down, but she keeps shouting, “Thanks to you, everything is over between me and Colin!”
"Colin doesn't want things to end"
He points out that Colin came over this morning and does not want things to end;  “But perhaps this business with the kiss – all right, this non-kiss – has thrown him slightly.   He will come round, you’ll see!” Garry predicts.
"Colin doesn't want to know!"
Britt is convinced that Colin does not want to know, and is advised, “Well, you’ll have to do something to change his mind – are you sure you’ve done everything you can?   There’s always something.”
"You haven't had another argument?"
Ricky walks in on this family meeting;  everyone is so quiet, he is convinced they have had another argument.   The situation is explained to him and he is horrified;
"OK, I'll be tested!"
he immediately volunteers to be tested as he is family,
"No, Ricky, you're too young"
but Mark dismisses the idea, saying he is too young.   Non leaves them, saying she has to meet a friend.
Vicky goes to look for potential kidney donors
Vicky decides to go round the village to try and round people up, and Kath will go round the estate;
"Only people I know well"
Mark is insistent that they only speak to those he knows well, and not to random people.
"You know me better than anyone"
Ricky says, “You know me better than anyone – I just want to do the test!”   Debbie reprimands him, but he demands, “Why won’t you let me help?
"You're so stupid sometimes!"
“You’re so stupid sometimes!”   He storms off to his room.
"I know what you said to Britt"
Garry is at the shop, and tells Colin, “I know what you said to Britt.”
"Just pay your money and go"
Colin just wants him to pay the money and go.
They hear a knock on the shop window . . .
Suddenly he hears a knock on the shop window, looks up and is surprised to see Britt, displaying large placards,
. . . and Britt puts her message . . .
which read, “So sorry.
. . . up on placards . . .
“I’m an idiot.
. . . concluding with a question . . .
“Please will you marry me?”
. . . which astonishes Colin
Colin witnesses this display with a look of incredulity, then goes outside.
"You're making a fool of yourself"
“You’re making a fool of yourself,” he says, but she insists that this is the only way to persuade him that she is serious.
"Co you think you can change your mind?"
She asks if he thinks that he can change his mind, and make her the happiest woman in the world.
"It didn't work for me, did it?"  [31 October 2016]
“You could have been more original,” he remarks, “It didn’t work for me, did it?”
"I didn't know what else to do"
As Britt tells him she did not know what else to do,
"Oh come on – get on with it, Colin!"
Garry demands that he give Britt an answer.
"She's lost every ounce of street cred!"
“She’s already lost every ounce of street cred as it is!” he says,
"There's nothing I want more!"
and Colin agrees to her request, admitting that there is nothing he wants more.   “Thank heavens that saga is over,” groans Garry, “Col, come over to the Deri when your shift’s finished!”
"That's not what I meant!"
Then he comments to Britt, “When I told you to do something, that’s not what I meant!”   She goes to embrace him, but he tells her, “Get off!”
"I'm not an invalid yet"
Sitting on the sofa, Debbie asks Mark if he wants a cup of tea;  “I’m not an invalid yet,” he replies.   Then Ricky walks in,
"I don't want you to think I'm not grateful, Rick"
and Mark tells him, “I don’t want you to think I’m not grateful to you for offering – everything will be all right.”
"I've been doing some research online"
“No it won’t, Dad, and you know it,” Ricky answers, “I’m a realist – I’ve been doing some research on the Internet, and there is no minimum age to be a kidney donor, so if your only problem was that I’m too young, there’s no problem now.   Listen, if you think I’m going to let you die without doing anything to help, well, sorry, you don’t know me very well!”
"I don't want you to go through this"
Mark does not want him to go through this;
"I just want to help"
“Neither do I,” says Ricky,  but if I am the only realistic choice, how are you going to stop me?   I don’t want to argue about this – I just want to help.
These two look much happier now
Britt and Colin arrive at the Deri in high spirits, but Vicky is not in the mood;
"We've got engaged!"
“We’ve got engaged!” Britt announces, and comments that Vicky could be a bit more excited for them.
Vicky tells them of Mark's news
She informs them of the bad news about Mark’s kidney, and that she is looking for volunteers to be a kidney donor;  “Would you be willing to have the test to see if you’re a match?”
Colin agrees to take the test
Colin agrees to this, although Britt urges him to think about it.   Garry is ready to get the champagne, but Britt suggests that it might not be appropriate in view of the circumstances.   Garry is surprised that Mark needs another new kidney,
"To the future!"
but still insists on celebrating the engagement.   “To the future!” he says enthusiastically.
"How can I stop him, Debs?"
Debbie cannot believe that Mark agrees with Ricky;  “As he said, how can I stop him?   If you stop him doing this, you will only turn him against us,” Mark tells her,
"I hate being a burden on my family"
“I hate being such a burden on my family,”
Debbie gives him a hug
and Debbie hugs him.
Non asks if Ricky is frightened, and he confesses that he is;
"I'm more frightened of losing Dad"
“But I’m more frightened of losing Dad – you would do the same, if you could – we all would.”
"How is this going to affect him?"
Mark worries that it is such an important year for him in school, and wonders how all this is going to affect him;  “And what if Ricky is the only match?”
They are both very concerned
He and Debbie are very concerned.
