13 November 2017

The victims of the catastrophe begin to stir . . .
There are the sounds of cries and groans from under the collapsed ceiling, and various people attempt to sit up;  Iolo asks Tyler if he is OK.
. . . but little Arwen lies motionless
Ffion sees that Arwen is not moving, and shouts for help.
Sheryl calls for an ambulance
As the doctor gets up from the floor, Sheryl says that she will phone for an ambulance.   Colin is concerned that Britt is all right.
Elgan heads for the door
As Sheryl reports that the roof has collapsed, Elgan heads towards the door;
Eileen finds Jim
Eileen finds that Jim and Gethin are there, but Garry warns her not to move them.   “Geth – please tell me he’s all right!” shouts Ffion, and he begins to stir.
Garry calls for Elgan’s assistance, but the doctor leaves the scene;
Gaynor is uncovered
Sheryl removes some timber from Gaynor,
"She's not breathing!"
and Colin says that she is not breathing.
"Where's Dr Pritchard?"
He turns her on to her back and demands, “Where’s Dr Pritchard?”   Garry pulls him away,
Britt administers CPR
and Britt takes charge, administering CPR [CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION].   A siren can be heard approaching.
The doctor is gripped by terror
As the ambulance pulls up outside Bethania, Elgan is cowering in a doorway, and sinks to the ground in a panic.
The casualties are assessed
The ambulance crews begin their work,
"It's not fair on Colin"
and Garry tells Britt that it is not fair on Colin that he still does not know.   “When were you going to tell him?   On your honeymoon?”
She comes to the conclusion that she does not have any choice now;
"It's just what he needs, isn't it?"
“With Gaynor’s life in the balance, and half the village in hospital, it’s just what he needs.   Oh, I hate this place!”
"Is Elgan suffering a mental breakdown?
Outside, as various people rush towards the scene, the doctor is still agonising in a dark corner.
"This was all Megan's fault!"
Waiting in the hospital, Jim cannot believe that Megan gave the work to that cowboy;  “This is all her fault!”
Gethin is in considerable pain
Nearby are Gethin, who is in a wheelchair, with Ffion and Arwen.
Eileen presumes that Megan was trying to save money, “And to think, it was supposed to be a night to remember Courtney!” exclaims Jim.
"Arwen Llywelyn"
Gethin is in considerable pain, but the doctor comes to call for Arwen Llywelyn;  he insists that he will be fine, and that Ffion should just look after Arwen.
Gaynor is hurried through
Gaynor, who is immobilised on a trolley, is wheeled past them,
"It's not looking good, Eileen"
and Colin reports that it is not looking good, as she has not come round at all.
"She was only unconscious for a few seconds"
The doctor asks Ffion how long Arwen was unconscious, and she replies that it could not been longer than a few seconds, adding that she had a few headaches last week.
"I want her to have a CT scan"
“I want to send her to have a CT scan [COMPUTERISED AXIAL TOMOGRAPHY] – it is better to be safe,” the doctor tells her,
Arwen takes all this quite stoically
and assures Arwen, “All you will have to do is lie on the big bed – you won’t feel anything.   This is only a precaution, as they always do a CT scan if a child has been unconscious for a time.”
Gethin cannot wait to get home
When they return to the waiting area, they pass Gethin, who hopes that he will not be long;  he just wants to go home now.
"I can't get hold of Izzy and Lois"
There is no further news of Gaynor, and Colin has been unable to get hold of Izzy or Lois, who are in Machu Picchu.   “They’ve been planning it for a while, after I gave them a little bit of money.   I didn’t leave a message because I don’t know what to say.”   Eileen advises that Jim is having an x-ray on his leg, and, apart from that, he should be fine.
Britt and Garry have been talking to the police
Garry and Britt arrive, having been delayed by the police talking to them;
"You may have saved Gaynor's life!"
Colin thanks Britt for the action she took, which may have saved Gaynor’s life.
“Listen, I know that this isn’t the time or place, but I meant it,” he tells her,
"I hope you feel the same way"
“I want to marry you – and I hope you feel the same way.   Do you?”
Britt evades the question
Britt makes no reply, so he asks, “What did Garry mean when he said you have something to tell me?”   She replies that he is quite correct –
"What is going on here is more important"
this is neither the time nor the place, and what is going on here is a lot more important;
She hugs Colin
she hugs him.
"You're home early"
Cadno and Eifion return to Penrhewl, where Mathew has only just got the boys to bed;  Cadno finds a lot of sweet wrappers,
Mathew removes the evidence
and emphasises they are not supposed to have sweets until the weekend.   Eifion is having a drink to get over the shock.
"The roof of the vestry collapsed"
He tells Mathew, “Look, the roof of the vestry collapsed – about five people are in hospital, and we don’t know if Gaynor is alive.
"We need to make sure you don't get into trouble"
“So we need to make sure you don’t get into trouble over this.”   Mathew looks very upset.
"What did you want her to admit?"
In the hospital corridor, Colin approaches Garry;  “When I asked Britt to marry me, what did you want her to admit?”
"This might be tea or coffee"
but at that moment she returns with some drinks, not sure which are tea and which are coffee.
"What did Garry want you to tell me?"
Then Colin asks her, “What did Garry want you to tell me?   I know this isn’t the time or . . .”
News that Gaynor is now stable
This time he is interrupted by the arrival of another doctor, who says that Mrs Llywelyn is now stable, and tells Britt that it is due to her quick reactions.
"Will she be all right?"
It is too early to say that she will be all right;  “Her brain has swollen because of the head injuries she has sustained, so we’ve placed her in what we call an induced coma, in the hope that the swelling will come down.   If it does not, she will need an operation, but I can’t say anything more than that.
The doctor is making no promises
“Her condition has not deteriorated and that is a good thing.”
Mathew knew that Carl was cutting corners and going too far,
"You have to keep quiet"
but Eifion urges him to keep it to himself.   “Don’t even tell Vicky – if the police question you, tell them you don’t know anything – as far as you know, he was doing a decent job, everything above board.”
"Carl is going to blame me"
Mathew is afraid that Carl will blame him, but Eifion insists, “You weren’t there long enough –
"He's the boss – it's his responsibility!"
“anyway, he was the boss, and it was his responsibility.”   Mathew does not want any trouble with the police, and so is advised not to say a word.
Loud music and quite a lot of whisky
At Elgan’s house, he appears to have got through half a bottle of Tesco Special Reserve Whisky, and heavy metal music is blaring,
The doorbell frightens Elgan
when the sound of the doorbell startles him.
"What if Gaynor doesn't make it, Britt?"
Back home, Colin is still unable to contact Izzy and Lois, and wonders what if Gaynor should not come through this.   Britt pleads with him not to do this to himself;
"Remember that she hasn't deteriorated"
he must remember that she has not deteriorated, and hold on to that.
"Now listen here, Col"
“Now listen here, Col,” she continues, but he agrees that it is not the time or place,
"Not if it's something bad"
especially if it is to tell him something bad.   Undeterred, she goes on, “But I have to – I’ve lost your money – all of it!   I got scammed!”
"Er . . . say that again!"
He thinks that he is hearing things and asks her to repeat what she said.
"Remember your laptop had a virus . . ."
“About a fortnight ago, this bloke phoned and said your laptop had a virus, do you remember?   He wanted details and I gave him everything –then I found out someone had cleared out your bank account.”
"Are you saying all the money's gone?"
“Are you saying that all the money’s gone?” Colin demands.
At last Garry is admitted
Elgan finally answers the door, and finds that it is Garry;  refusing a drink, he asks if the doctor is all right.
"Why did you run away like that?"
Then he wants to know, “Why did you run away from the vestry?   It was an odd thing to do – a doctor running away from a situation like that.”
"The ambulancemen can do more than me"
Elgan shrugs his shoulders, and reminds Garry that the ambulance came, and they can do a lot more in a crisis like that than someone like him.
"My sister did more than you – and she works in a chippy!"
“My sister did more than you!” explodes Garry, “And she works in a chippy!   Gaynor could have died if Britt hadn’t given her CPR!”
"What?   Gaynor?"
On hearing the name of Gaynor, the doctor’s attitude changes.   Garry informs him that she is in a coma;  “I can’t understand it – you did nothing to help any of us – why?”
"I don't want you here!"
Elgan says that he had better go;  “I don’t want you here.
He yells at Garry to go
“You don’t understand – just go!” he shouts, and Garry does so
"The bank let all the money be transferred?"
Colin says, incredulously, “The bank let that amount of money be transferred in one lump sum?”
"I mentioned it to Sheryl"
Britt tells him she did not realise anything was wrong until she mentioned it to Sheryl.   He realises that Sheryl has known about it,
"Haven't you heard about these scams?"
and demands, “Haven’t you heard of these kinds of scams before, or read about them?”
She wails, “I tried to sell my share of the Deri to Garry to try and get back some of the money, but he did not want to buy it.”   Colin cannot understand why he was not told about this, and why the bank did not contact him, as it is his account.
"There were a couple of calls"
Then he realises that he did have a couple of phone calls, but was too busy practising for the dancing and did not recognise the number.
She hands over the bank's letter
Britt takes the letter from the bank out of her bag and hands it to him;
"Opening my post as well, are you?"
“You’re opening my post as well now, are you?” is Colin’s comment, “After struggling and struggling for years for money, I was comfortable at last –
"Poor as a church mouse again"
“but now, all of a sudden, I am as poor as a church mouse again.   Didn’t you go to the police?”
"I did everything wrong!"
Britt admits that she did everything wrong;
"Finish?   Of course not . . ."
“Do you want to finish things now?”   He replies that of course he does not,
". . . but I am going to see Gaynor"
but is going out to see Gaynor.
"Two broken ribs and concussion"
Ffion reports to Eileen that Gethin has broken two ribs and sustained concussion, so they are keeping him in overnight.
Jim is on his way home
Then Jim is wheeled in, having broken his leg, but is allowed to go home.
"We want to give Arwen an MRI scan"
The doctor comes to advise Ffion that they want to give Arwen an MRI scan [MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING], as they detected a small shadow on the CT scan and want to investigate further.
"It might be nothing"
“It might be nothing, but we need to do a scan to be sure.”
Gaynor lies in her hospital bed
Gaynor lies in a coma and Elgan is looking at her notes;  then he sits down beside her.
"I'm sorry, Gaynor"
He is very concerned and says, “Sorry.”   Colin comes in and is surprised to see the doctor there;
"Is she going to get better?"
he asks if she is going to get better, but the doctor cannot say.
"No-one can say yet"
“No-one can say yet.   You come and sit here – I will go so you two can . . .”
Colin asks him, “Where did you go?   You just disappeared!”
"I was not feeling right"
Elgan replies that he was not feeling right, and he is sorry, so very sorry.
"I couldn't get hold of Izzy and Lois"
Colin tells Gaynor, “I couldn’t get hold of Izzy and Lois –
"You need to get better quickly"
“so you need to get better – quickly – do you hear?   So that I don’t have to go and look for them.”
Elgan watches through the glass
Doctor Elgan watches through the blinds.
"I left Arwen with a nurse"
Arwen has been left with a nurse, so they can talk in private;
"A growth on the cerebellum"
Ffion is told that the results of the MRI scan show that Arwen has a growth on the cerebellum, at the back of the head.   This is probably what has been causing the headaches.
The worst news that Ffion could hear
Ffion is confused and fearful;  the doctor says that it is a tumour, and the next step is to do a biopsy to find out exactly what it is.   She would like to do that as soon as possible.
"Do you think it's cancer?"
“Do you think it’s cancer?” Ffion asks, but the doctor cannot answer that without doing the biopsy.
